After Schalke draw – SVE hit the 40-point mark

SV Elversberg achieved a 1:1 draw at home against Schalke 04 and could (perhaps even should) have managed a win. Ultimately, no-one was unsatisfied with the point gained.

The game started perfectly: rather than falling victim to set pieces, SV Elversberg struck in the 18th minute of the match and Florian Le Joncour put SVE in the lead. After half time, Schalke then brought on Keke Topp, who scored an equaliser 15 minutes later. Although SVE then had some great opportunities to score a win, by Paul Wanner and Jannik Rochelt, the score ultimately stayed at a draw. Horst Steffen, SV Elversberg‘s coach, was ultimately not unhappy with the draw: ‘We still had opportunities for a lucky punch with two big goals at the end. But all in all, we can be very happy with 1:1 and 40 points.’ Even Schalke were ultimately not unhappy despite their precarious situation towards the end, highlighting the position that SVE holds in the second division. And for the great FC Schalke 04, winning a point after falling behind in Elversberg is a definite success: ‘No-one should be hanging their heads after this. We were behind and we still gained a point. Every point helps in the battle to avoid relegation’, Schalke midfielder Ron Schallenberg noted after the game.

SV Elversberg have now stepped away from the relegation battle thanks to their performances and the 40 points on their ledger. ‘I am delighted that we still have four games remaining. But even if we have secured our place in this league for next year, we still want to win every remaining game and gain points’, Steffen explains.
