The 2. Bundesliga 2024/2025 season is drawing to a close. With two days of play left, SV Elversberg face not just a sporting challenge, but also an emotional climax: their last home game of the season. This Saturday 10 May at 1 p.m., head coach Horst Steffen’s team will be welcoming Eintracht Braunschweig to the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde. This will be a demanding sporting showdown, but also a very special opportunity for the team and the fans to look back together over a remarkable season – and potentially celebrate its provisional highlight.

An opponent on the up – strong second half of the season for Braunschweig
The table rankings are deceptive: whilst Elversberg have shown impressive consistency to sit in third place and still have a chance of being promoted directly through from the 3. Liga to the Bundesliga, Eintracht Braunschweig are languishing in 15th place – seemingly deep in the battle to avoid being relegated. However, taking this at face value would be dangerous and risk underestimating their upcoming opponent. They must not make this mistake.
Braunschweig have in fact enjoyed a remarkable second half of the season. Over the last few weeks and months, the Lower Saxony team have enjoyed a rise in form that makes them one of the most dangerous teams in the bottom third of the table. ‘Braunschweig have only scored two points fewer than us in the whole of the second half of the season’, Steffen emphasises. ‘They recently beat Hamburg, Paderborn and Kaiserslautern and held Düsseldorf to a draw – it is clear that we know what we are up against. It will definitely be an interesting task. We must put in a good performance and will also need a bit of luck to win the match.’
Eintracht have now remained unbeaten for six official matches in a row – a tally that speaks for itself.
Focus, intensity, countermeasures: tactical direction
The direction to take for the duel against Braunschweig is clear: it will be a match that requires maximum alertness and both physical and mental freshness. ‘Intensity, focus and excitement are all important’, Steffen clarified. ‘We will need to be very active, set the tempo and also ensure good countermeasures. Braunschweig are not the same team they were in the first half of the season. If you take a look at their matches in the second half of the season, this will be a top duel.’
The fact that Elversberg have set this standard demonstrates the team’s growing confidence. The team’s development in this second-division season has been substantial – in terms of both play and mindset. SVE are heading into their home final with a self-critical yet ambitious approach. This is the last time this season that the team’s loyal supporters will be able to watch them live on Kaiserlinde. The stage is set for a sporting and emotional climax.
Spurred on by third place – questions marks over the team
The team’s good position in the table is more than just a brief snapshot – it demonstrates what can be achieved with a united team performance. ‘The mood is unsurprisingly good. The fact that we are now third in the table is a fantastic starting position that makes us bold and positive’, Steffen said. Nevertheless, the coach also understands that the course of play on Saturday could be heavily dependent on who is ultimately available.
This is because some key players are currently injured or not yet fully fit. Carlo Sickinger, Lukas Pinckert and Paul Stock are injured and Arne Sicker is not yet back in training with the team.
Future secure – Maximilian Rohr staying to 2028
In the midst of the current season and its sporting challenges, SVE have also sent a strong message for the future. Central defender Maximilian Rohr, who was bought from SC Paderborn last summer for a transfer fee of 100,000 euros, has extended his contract early – and will be remaining part of the Elversberg family until at least 30 June 2028. This step offers some security for team planning and underlines the confidence in the club’s ongoing development.
Since his arrival in Saarland, Rohr has established himself as an indispensable part of the defensive lineup. In his 24 appearances so far, he has demonstrated consistency, strong head-to-head play and calm playmaking. ‘Maximilian has continually demonstrated his quality this season with his reliable, confident appearances’, sports director Ole Book said in his praise.
Given this, at this early stage, we are delighted to be able to securely plan his future here for the next few years.
The player himself views his decision as the logical consequence of his positive experiences with the club: ‘Once I came to SVE, I quickly realised that this move was the right step for me. Quite apart from this successful season, working with the whole team has been an utter delight. I am therefore very excited about the future and the shared challenges that await us.’
