Elversberg host Kaiserslautern: an explosive derby awaits

Five days after successfully reaching the second round of the DFB cup, SV Elversberg are now looking forward to their next major 2. Bundesliga highlight: on Friday 22 August, manager Vincent Wagner’s team will be playing host to 1. FC Kaiserslautern at their home Kaiserlinde stadium. The southwest derby kicks off at 6:30 p.m. in the URSAPHARM Arena. Anticipation levels for this floodlit match could scarcely be any higher – and all involved know that this will be an extremely difficult task in sporting terms.

Kaiserslautern have a solid physical presence. I think they will come in waves – at high intensity, to put pressure on us, but also with stages where they retreat back into a block. They will doubtless also be on the lookout for certain transitional moments

Wagner explained beforehand. So the team have a definite respect for their Palatinate neighbours, but also confidence in their own strengths: ‘We have a lot coming our way on Friday, but we will also have opportunities.’

The derby between these two southwestern clubs creates a special atmosphere. Once again, URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde will be full to bursting. Whilst FCK will be able to rely on a vocal block of fans willing to travel, SVE are counting on their home advantage and the support of their own fans, who regularly transform this small but enthusiastic boiling pot in Spiesen-Elversberg into a difficult terrain to conquer.

For Elversberg, this match is much more than just a prestigious duel with a neighbour. It also represents another acid test in a season that should demonstrate once again how far the team have come in the second division and that they are here to stay. After their narrow but well-earned DFB Cup victory in Ulm, the team are brimming with confidence – and will be seeking to carry this over into the league. Wagner will have almost the whole squad to choose from: he will have access to the same players as last time, with the exception of Jan Gyamerah on his red card suspension.

One explosive element will be the return of a player who played an unparalleled role in SV Elversberg‘s recent success story: Semih Sahin. The midfielder moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the summer. Before this, he played a total of 121 official matches for SVE between 2021 and 2025, becoming a key performer. He was an integral part of the team’s rise from the Regionalliga to the Bundesliga playoffs.

Sahin himself has mixed feelings about returning to Kaiserlinde: ‘I am still in contact with many people at Elversberg. I think that’s normal when we achieved so much together. But I’m not specifically getting in touch because of Friday’s game.’ Nevertheless, it will be a special evening for him.

I owe a lot to Elversberg. Clearly, therefore, this will not be a normal game. Emotions will once again be running higher than usual. But I will try to stay professional and view the match through professional eyes. We are friends before the game, we will be friends after the game, and during the game all that matters is the result.

In the second leg of the Bundesliga playoffs, when he had to be substituted off with an injury, many spectators viewed that moment as key in Elversberg’s narrow defeat by Heidenheim. Now he is returning clad in different colours – but memories of his time in an SVE jersey are strong.

FCK are coming to Elversberg with a clear aim: after finishing seventh in the table last season, this year they will be seeking to take the next step, preferably further upwards. They made strong investment over the summer to achieve this. Kaiserslautern have begun the new season with a win and a loss, and will be working hard to launch a successful streak.

Their 7:0 against Oberliga team Stahnsdorf in the DFB Cup has boosted the team’s confidence. Sahin said after the match: ‘Coming out of a match 7:0 just gives you confidence. We can carry this forward to our upcoming matches, especially Friday evening. This will be a difficult game, but we will draw on this confidence, just let it flow and then see what happens.’

Despite these clear words, Kaiserslautern are not automatically the favourites in Elversberg. Although the Red Devils have a strong presence and good individual quality, they have struggled in their recent encounters with SVE. Kaiserslautern have failed to defeat Elversberg since their 3:2 win in August 2023 with a late dream goal by Robin Zimmer. SVE have proven that they can do more than just needle their major rivals. They have remained unbeaten in their recent encounters, pushing boldly forward whilst retaining a solid defence.

Although their attacking ranks do not yet have the same penetrating power as in recent years with players like Asllani or Damar, their recent performances have showcased their positive development: the expected goals metric clearly favours Elversberg, who are often closer to scoring than FCK. The lack of a major payoff so far is serving as motivation for the home team, rather than a cause for concern.

Once again, the key to success will be a bold playing style. Elversberg are known for wanting to shape the course of their matches. Against Kaiserslautern, this will mean surviving tense periods, defending against pressure from their opponents – and then making their mark. Wagner is expecting periods of high pressure alternating with moments where Kaiserslautern fall further back. Situations like these need to be handled with patience but also determination.

SVE’s most recent performances have shown that they can hold their own even against physically strong opponents. For example, in their cup match against Ulm, their defensive ranks held firm against late attacks by the home team, whilst positionless player Felix Keidel provided the decisive moment. This combination of stability and efficiency could also be vital against Kaiserslautern.

All of this promises an evening of intense football. SV Elversberg are facing an opponent with high ambitions and the return of a crowd favourite. However, the home team have no reason to hide their faces: they have shown that they can keep pace with the Palatinate team – and potentially achieve much more.
