German gymnastics team looking forward to Finals 2024 in Frankfurt

There is a fantastic sporting highlight just around the corner for the German gymnastics team: the Finals 2024 will take place in Frankfurt am Main from 6 to 10 June 2024. This major sporting event promises to be a celebration of athletics and elegance, where Germany’s top gymnasts fight for the national championship title at the Süwag Energie ARENA in the Main metropolis.

This year’s Finals are focusing exclusively on the German gymnastics federation’s Olympic disciplines. The national teams for artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining will be featuring at this multisport event.

Just two months before the Games, for many German athletes, the German Championships will determine whether or not they are able to complete in the Olympics.

Rhythmic gymnastics

Six-time world champion Darja Varfolomeev of TSV Schmiden and Margarita Kolosov (SC Potsdam) have already secured tickets to the Olympics. Darja is the favourite, having won all five gold medals last year. However, her team colleagues Margarita Kolosov and Anastasia Simakova (TSV Schmiden) could also feature in title fights. The German championship all-around results also serve as initial qualification for the Olympic Games. The top eight gymnasts then compete at the subsequent second qualification round on 29 June 2024 in Schmiden. The gymnasts of TV Dahn are the favourites in the group competitions, having secured all of the gold medals in the last three years.

Men’s artistic gymnastics

As well as the actual titles, the German gymnasts are particularly focusing on the Olympic Games. German gymnastics federation head coach Valeri Belenki and the whole team managed to qualify for the Games in Paris at the world championships in Antwerp. This means that the national coach has five starting places to offer for the competition at the end of July. Frankfurt is now the first of two qualification competitions, with the final decision to be made two weeks later in Rüsselsheim.

35 gymnasts in total are competing for the German championship titles this weekend. Many (although not all) of these are hoping to secure a ticket to Paris. Lukas Dauser (TSV Unterhaching), the current world champion on the parallel bars, is highly likely to win a place. His long-time teammate Andreas Toba (TK Hannover) is seeking to accompany him to Paris-Bercy. Nils Dunkel (SV Halle) of Erfurt competed in Tokyo in 2021 and has been a firm fixture on the national team for several years. Excitement also awaits with Pascal Brendel (KTV 68 Wetzlar), who won both the all-around title and the vault competition at last year’s Finals.

Women’s artistic gymnastics

For Germany’s female gymnasts, there is only one remaining place for the Olympic Games up for grabs. Pauline Schäfer-Betz (KTV Chemnitz) and Sarah Voss (TZ DSHS Köln) have already secured personal slots thanks to their world championship results on the beam and floor. Now there is just one starting place left – between top-class athletes such as Elisabeth Seitz (MTV Stuttgart), Helen Kevric (MTV Stuttgart), Karina Schönmaier (TuS Chemnitz-Altendorf) and Emma Malewski (TuS Chemnitz-Altendorf). A total of 29 athletes will be lining up to compete. The women’s gymnastics competition promises top performances and plenty of excitement.

Trampolining

In trampolining, Fabian Vogel managed to secure a German gymnastics team quota place for the Olympic Games in Paris on his excellent performance during the world cup series. Aileen Rösler and Fabian Vogel, both of MTV Bad Kreuznach, are the defending champions and championship favourites. Rising talents Aurelia Eislöffel, Maya Möller, and siblings Christine and Matthias Schuldt are attracting particular attention. Caio Lauxtermann will be on the attack, after he was forced to withdraw from last year’s medal race following a fall.
