Tim Hellwig on USA tour

On Sunday (18 August 2024), Paris gold medal winner Tim Hellwig competed in a non-stop race format to kick off the supertri League in Boston. It covered three super-sprints of a 300-metre swim, 4-kilometre cycle and 1.6-kilometre run back-to-back with no break, making the competition particularly intense and exciting. As an additional challenge, competitors were eliminated from the race if they were more than 90 seconds behind the leader in any sub-section.

The world’s best triathletes, including many famous faces from the recent Olympic Games in Paris, came to face off in this extremely quick, eventful racing format. As well as competing individually, the athletes also work in teams, adding a tactical element to the event. Tim Hellwig started for the Stars and Stripes Racing team.

Tim put in a strong performance in Boston and gained fourth place in a race that was won by Alex Yee. As in Paris, Yee beat out Hayden Wilde in an exciting duel. Dorian Coninx took third place. The Saarland athlete remained in the leading group for the entire race and fought for the win right through to the end. He was ultimately just nine seconds behind.

The 2024 supertri season consists of a total of five races, including events in Chicago, London, Toulouse and the final in Neom in Saudi Arabia. Things continue on Sunday (25 August) for Tim Hellwig’s USA tour with the second race of the supertri League in Chicago.

SVE celebrate key win in DFB cup away game

On Sunday (18 August 2024), SV Elversberg lined up against Oberliga team VfV Borussia 06 Hildesheim for a DFB cup first-round match at the Friedrich Ebert stadium in Hildesheim. SVE, who qualified for the cup via the pro pool for the first time, lived up to their role as favourites by achieving a magnificent 7:0 win.

In an entertaining cup fight, the underdogs from Hildesheim played an open game and posed a few issues for SVE at the beginning of the match. After some difficult early minutes, however, SV Elversberg started to exert their dominance. Luca Schnellbacher began the hail of goals in the 17th minute, followed by Robin Fellhauer (33nd minute) and a Hildesheim own goal (43rd minute), making the half-time score 3:0. In the second half, Paul Stock (53rd minute), Freddy Schmahl (62nd minute), Carlo Sickinger (76th minute) and Jo Boyamba (78th minute) brought the result up to 7:0.

Team BIKE AID out and about in France once again

From 13 to 16 August, the pro cyclists of Saarland’s Team BIKE AID completed the final stage of their very own Tour de France with the Tour du Limousin.

The team of drivers Antoine Berlin, Léo Bouvier, Vinzent Dorn, Pirmin Eisenbarth, Oliver Mattheis, Anton Schiffer and Philip Meiser put in a strong performance at the 2024 Tour du Limousin.

Vinzent Dorn deserves particular mention, topping the sprinter rankings and wearing the blue jersey on the final podium.

Despite the challenges and the difficult race, the team were able to gain valuable experience and ensure perfect preparations for the upcoming Lidl Deutschland Tour 2024, where they will be competing from Wednesday 21 August through to the grand final in Saarbrücken on 25 August.

Team75 Motorsport gains valuable points at the Nürburgring

At the weekend (17 and 18 August 2024), Team75 Motorsport from Landstuhl enjoyed a successful start to the second half of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany season. The team put in strong performances in both races and were able to gain valuable points.

In the Saturday race, Robert de Haan (18, Eerbeek/Netherlands) gained third place in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with the starting number of 14, thus securing not only a podium position but also a win in the rookie rankings. Teammate Janne Stiak (17, Steinhude) fought his way to twelfth place in the sister vehicle with the starting number of 15, but missed out on points due to a subsequent time penalty.

The Sunday race also saw them celebrating a podium finish, a rookie win, and two cars in the top five. 18-year-old Dutch driver Robert de Haan once again gained third place in the overall rankings in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with the starting number of 14, plus first place in the rookie rankings for new drivers, clinching and consolidating the top position in the table with his fifth and sixth wins. This success also put Robert in third place in the championship table. His 17-year-old teammate Janne Stiak from Steinhude earned a strong fifth place in the sister vehicle with the starting number of 15. Janne started the race in eighth place and put in a strong performance to fight his way up to fifth for a well-earned eleven championship points.

From 6 to 8 September, the team owned by Timo Bernhard will be at the Sachsenring for the next Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany race.

Rain stops Saarlouis Hornets’s playoff game against Stuttgart

On Saturday (17 August 2024), the Saarlouis Hornets faced reigning champions the Stuttgart Reds 2 for the first 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Süd playoff game in the Saarlouis Ballpark. As the top runner-up in the 2. Bundesliga Süd, the Hornets hosted the previous year’s winner for the first game of a best-of-three series.

The Hornets started strong and put the Stuttgart defence under pressure with patient, effective offensive play. They gained twelve runs in the first four innings to take a 12:3 lead in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. The Hornets’s defence, led by Yannik Petry on the mount, initially kept the strong Stuttgart offensive in check and only allowed a handful of hits through.

In the fifth inning, the Hornets changed pitcher, and the Reds’ offensive gained a better foothold. The Hornets chalked up seven runs, bringing things to level-pegging at 12:12. Shortly after, a downpour made the field unusable and prompted the umpire to suspend the match.

The game will now continue with a sixth inning in Stuttgart on Saturday (24 August). After this, the second game will take place as planned. If a third decider should be required, both teams will meet once again in Stuttgart on Sunday.

Hurricanes keep playoff hopes alive with win against Cowboys

On Saturday (17 August 2024), the Saarland Hurricanes welcomed Munich Cowboys for a crucial erima German Football League (GFL) game in Völklingen. The Cowboys stood as the third team in the table, whilst the Hurricanes were in sixth after a win over the Kirchdorf Wildcats and were hoping for another success to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The game began with a strong offensive from the Hurricanes, but this was initially halted by the Cowboys’ defence. The Canes took the lead following a touchdown by Spencer Corona, but the Cowboys quickly responded to pull 7:6 ahead.

Undeterred, the Saarland players doubled down and took the score up to 20:7 with touchdowns by Matt Wilson and Spencer Corona. The Hurricanes’s defence was strong and did not allow the Cowboys any opportunities to score points.

The Saarland offence then increased the lead to 28:7. During the fourth quarter, the Cowboys reduced this to 2:13, but were no longer able to turn the game around. The Saarland Hurricanes continued to play with huge focus to secure the crucial win.

This success was hugely important for the Hurricanes, as it keeps the possibility of reaching the playoffs alive. The team put in a cohesive team performance, showing that they have learned from their mistakes made during the first half of the season.

The team under head coach Jakob Lawrence still have two away games to play. On Saturday (24 August), the Saarland Hurricanes face the Ravensburg Razorbacks. If they win their games in Ravensburg and then in Straubing, a playoff place would be within reach.

Füchse Berlin gain valuable insights during preparatory tournament

From 15 to 17 August 2024, Füchse Berlin took part in an international preparatory tournament at the MBS Arena in Potsdam to get ready for the forthcoming season. The tournament gave players an opportunity to review their form and tactics and gain valuable game practice.

In the first game of the tournament on Thursday (15 August), Füchse Berlin faced Bundesliga promoted team 1. VfL Potsdam. Füchse put in an impressive performance and gained a clear 49:27 win. Particularly worthy of mention is Füchse’s strong offensive, which began putting pressure on the Potsdam team right from the outset and scored numerous goals.

In the second game of the tournament on Saturday (17 August), the Berlin handball players were up against Danish club Bjerringbro-Silkeborg. In an exciting, hard-fought game, Füchse had to admit a close 30:32 defeat. Despite their first loss in their season preparations, coach Jaron Siewert’s team put in a strong performance and were able to gain vital insights for their further preparations.

As well as being important from a sporting perspective, this tournament in Potsdam also had a very special emotional component. Bob Hanning, CEO of Füchse Berlin and former coach of 1. VfL Potsdam, stood in for future coach Emir Kurtagic, who was looking after Germany’s U18 national team at the European Championships in Montenegro. This was a very special moment for Hanning, given his close links with both Füchse Berlin and 1. VfL Potsdam.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
