New year home opener for SVE

The first home game of the year, unfinished business from the first leg, and an opponent who has recently suffered some defensive issues: SV Elversberg are welcoming VfL Bochum to the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde for their first home appearance of 2026.
SV Elversberg’s first match of the year is one that deserves particular attention for numerous reasons. Eight home games, five wins, three draws – SVE remain undefeated in their home stadium thus far this season. After their first match of the year in Nuremberg, which ended in a late 2:3 defeat, the team now have an opportunity to get back on track in front of a home crowd. In VfL Bochum, an opponent are coming to Kaiserlinde who have allowed a lot through recently but are still very aware of the task at hand.
Bochum conceded five goals in their last two league matches. 2:2 against Karlsruher SC was followed by 3:3 against SV Darmstadt 98, where Bochum struggled time and again on a defensive level despite their own attacking campaigns. This phase is particularly important in view of their match in Elversberg, is it relates to what Bochum defender Maximilian Wittek considers to be their key starting point. Despite staffing changes, he is expecting SVE to provide an intense match. ‘Elversberg still have a good team, even if they have lost their top goal scorer. They remain true to their particular approach. They are a very strong team that also have genuine attacking quality’, Wittek said.

VfL will be seeking to consolidate their own stability before they face a team that have offered very few attacking opportunities in their home stadium thus far. ‘To be honest, it must be said that Darmstadt had opportunities in the first half that they failed to take’, Wittek explained in retrospect. ‘In previous weeks, we excelled by allowing little to nothing through.’ The higher number of goals conceded recently seems to have been clearly addressed on an internal level. ‘But of course, we also need to defend better. These are issues that have been clearly addressed and that we are working on. I hope we will do better at it in Elversberg.’
From Elversberg’s perspective, this means that Bochum will be arriving with a clear aim of more compact play, rather than falling behind early on once again. In addition, in Philipp Hofmann, they are bringing a player to Kaiserlinde who has been much more prominent in this second-division season than he was during last year’s Bundesliga season. The 32-year-old chalked up 32 appearances, three goals and four assists last year. Following the team’s relegation, he has already exceeded this total after just 17 days of play: four goals, five assists, and most recently a goal against Darmstadt. Notably and interestingly, the only match that Hofmann has missed in this second-division season was, ironically, the first leg against Elversberg. He was on the squad for VfL’s 2:0 win but was not actually used.
Hofmann is likely to play a central role once again on Sunday. Although his scores have improved, Hoffmann’s value in Bochum goes far beyond just this. He is their pivot point, anchor and header specialist. After a few recent goal-laden matches recently, he called for balance above all. ‘We just need to find a good mix. Conceding five goals in our last two matches was annoying. But I don’t think that was to do with our attacking.’ However, he also made it clear what his team could expect in Elversberg. ‘We are facing an extremely strong team. Their stadium is small and awkward. But we showed against Darmstadt that we can hold our own against top teams. So we are heading to Elversberg confident.’

This second-leg match is also a special one for SVE given the first leg. Bochum’s 2:0 win came about under rather different circumstances, as Elversberg went a man down early on following Jan Gyamerah’s red card. Now they are facing each other once again, this time at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde, where Elversberg remain undefeated so far this season and where Vincent Wagner’s team have managed their strongest performances.
In staffing terms, Bochum have almost a full lineup available for this match. Other than striker Ibrahim Sissoko (who is undergoing rehab in Paris) and midfielder Matus Bero (who is in rehab training), manager Uwe Rösler has all his players available. 23 outfield players were training this week and Gerrit Holtmann is also an option again. Six Bochum players, including Hofmann and Wittek, are heading into the match with four yellow cards.
Elversberg’s staffing situation has also increased attention in the run-up to the match. SVE‘s squad could change further in the coming weeks. Striker Mohammad Mahmoud, who moved to Elversberg from the VfL Bochum youth A team in the summer of 2024, has not yet had a chance to play. After a loan to the FC Zürich U21s and appearances with the second team in the Saarlandliga, the attacking player has not featured in the second-division squad once under manager Vincent Wagner. According to unanimous media reports, Mahmoud now seems likely to be moving to Egypt, specifically to first-division club Al-Masry SC. A loan until the end of the season could also be an option. This staffing change will not affect the match against Bochum in sporting terms, but it does emphasise Elversberg’s commitment to maintaining a clearly structured squad.
Regardless, attentions on Kaiserlinde are firmly fixed on the team’s home game. The URSAPHARM Arena remains a crucial factor this season, even off the pitch. Whilst matches are played, work continues to progress on the new north stand. In the future, this should provide additional seating, including business areas and ‘field boxes’ at pitch level. It should significantly increase capacity and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027. For SVE, this remodel forms part of long-term development that is running parallel to everyday sporting activities.
In sporting terms, the situation remains clear: Elversberg are still undefeated at home, whilst Bochum are arriving after a set of goal-heavy matches and understand the importance of a stable performance. Both teams are heading into the match with clear goals in mind. For SVE, the first home game of the year offers an opportunity to continue their streak and respond to their defeat in Nuremberg. Bochum, on the other hand, will be trying to concede fewer goals on Kaiserlinde than has been the case recently. Everything else will be decided on the pitch.
