Saarland Hurricanes host Schwäbisch Hall – GFL clash with playoff feel

The starting situation is clear and excitement is rising: on Saturday (23 August 2025), the Saarland Hurricanes will be facing the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns at the Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion in Völklingen. Kick-off is at 4 p.m. – and the match has the potential to shape the course of the season.
After the break, every snap counts
There has been a five week gap between the Hurricanes’s most recent appearance and their upcoming home game. Their defeat by the Berlin Rebels on 19 July was a setback – especially as the attacking ranks took a long time to establish a foothold in the match. It was not until the second half that they chalked up two touchdowns, including a lovely pass from quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp to Evan Liggett. Receiver Spencer Corona also showed that he can eke out space whenever needed, with 181 yards and a touchdown. However, the Rebels remained efficient – and the Hurricanes were defeated 22:35.
Table situation: fully open – anything possible
The GFL Süd is closer than ever. The Pforzheim Wilddogs are at the top with 6–4 wins, followed by the Razorbacks and the Cowboys with 5–4 each. The Unicorns occupy the fourth and final playoff place with 4–5 – with the Hurricanes directly behind them at 3–6. A win on Saturday would shake things up and give the Canes a direct advantage in the race for the playoffs.
Direct duel for fourth place
The match against Schwäbisch Hall is more than just a regular league match. The two teams are jostling for the same position – and both are aware that their remaining games are all against direct competitors. For the Hurricanes, this represents an opportunity, as every win has an immediate impact on the table. The aim is clear: stay focused, minimise errors, and play to their own strengths.
Game day in Völklingen – football meets family
As well as the sporting highlight, this home match day also offers a programme of events for all ages. There is plenty of entertainment on offer, from a throwing stand to face painting to a bouncy castle. The friends association’s red pavilion provides information and the opportunity for a chat, as well as merchandise and food at family-friendly prices. This ensures that football day in Völklingen is a real experience both on and off the field.
Tickets for match day are available online here or at the gate.
Outlook
The Hurricanes have three matches left, all against teams that are currently above them in the table. This is not a disadvantage – in fact, quite the opposite: it means that every match will have an immediate impact on the table situation. The encounter against Schwäbisch Hall marks the first touchstone. Whoever wins on Saturday will gain themselves some breathing space – and perhaps also some momentum for the final spurt of the season.
The match will be streamed live on sportdeutschland.tv for a charge. They will also broadcast the conference for free.
