Season opener 2025: first home game for Saarland Hurricanes
After a nerve-racking start to the season in Munich where the Saarland Hurricanes secured their first points of the new erima GFL season with a narrow 28:27 defeat of the Munich Cowboys, next up is their first home game. On 17 May 2025, the Hurricanes welcome you to their season opener at the Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion in Völklingen – plus an eventful programme for all American football fans.
Strong start – now things continue at home!
The win in Munich showed that the Hurricanes are kicking off this season with a clear philosophy of play and huge commitment. Despite falling behind early on, the team showed strong nerve to fight their way impressively back into the game. The team were united, deployed clever moves and put in some impressive individual performances in both attack and defence.
They are now heading into the first home game of the season with plenty of momentum. Head coach Jake Lawrence emphasised that focus, team spirit and a disciplined style of play would be key factors in a successful season.
Wilddogs: promoted team with fighting spirit
The Pforzheim Wilddogs, new arrivals starting their first GFL1 season, were able to win their first match against the Allgäu Comets with an impressive scoreline of 34:20 and will be heading to Völklingen with plenty of confidence. Pforzheim offer pace, physical presence and an aggressive style of play, making them an opponent that Saarland will not be underestimating.
Hurricanes with wind in their sails
A few of the Hurricanes’s key players also impressed during their strong start to the season in Munich:
- Quarterback Jakob Parks put in a confident performance at his debut.
- Returning players Marvin Fuchs, Spencer Corona and Thomas Jacob contributed their experience to the team.
- Linebacker Jaren Banks made his mark by converting an interception to a touchdown.
Despite their successful start, this week the Canes have been focusing on fine tuning to further develop their good early form.

Fans can look forward to two exciting American football matches at the season opener:
12 p.m.: GFL Juniors – U20 vs. Munich Cowboys
4 p.m.: GFL1 – Saarland Hurricanes vs. Pforzheim Wilddogs
Special highlight: man of the match – the fans decide!
The season opener offers one very special feature for fans: the ‘man of the match’ campaign. Together with the Canes’s partner Riddle.com, all spectators in the stadium can actively help to choose which player receives the accolade at the end of the match. QR codes that spectators can scan to vote will be displayed all over the stadium.
The player with the most votes will be honoured live and all participants will enter a draw to win fantastic prizes, including two seated tickets to a Canes home game.
