Second home game: SV Elversberg welcome relegated Bundesliga team Darmstadt 98

On Saturday, SV Elversberg are welcoming the faltering relegated Bundesliga team for a home game – the two teams’ season openers are irrelevant to coach Horst Steffen.

After their first match on home soil against 1. FC Köln, this weekend sees SV Elversberg‘s second home game of the current second division season. The Saarland players are once again facing a notable opponent: on Saturday 31 August, coach Horst Steffen’s team are up against SV Darmstadt 98 in the URSAPHARM arena. The starting whistle is at 1 p.m. on Kaiserlinde.

This match against the relegated Bundesliga team from Darmstadt promises to be a key test. Last season, the Lilies were still playing in Germany’s top division, and have an experienced coach on the sidelines in the form of Torsten Lieberknecht. Last weekend, Darmstadt just missed out on gaining their first win of the 2024/25 second division season, and had to make do with a 1:1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg after an intense clash. ‘It was important for the fans to see that against Nürnberg: Lieberknecht doesn’t just talk about development, it is something that is really cultivated together’, the coach explained. The Lilies also have huge respect for SVE: ‘Elversberg are a technically very challenging team who I watched play live more often last season. They have been cresting the wave for some time, and are a mature team with set processes and structures.’

Despite the Lilies’ modest progress thus far (just one point from their first three games), SVE‘s coach cautions against underestimating the Darmstadt team. ‘Previous results are essentially irrelevant’, the SV Elversberg coach emphasised in his analysis before the showdown. ‘Darmstadt are a relegated Bundesliga team who are coming here in search of their first win. We hope to and must put up a fight, as they have plenty of power and extremely good players in their ranks.’

Steffen also noted that the quality of their opponent should not be underestimated. The young new additions to the Lilies’ squad could have a particularly major impact on the course of the game. ‘There have recently also been a few new arrivals who will definitely affect the game on Saturday, as well as our opponents’ future’, Steffen explained. ‘We need to put in a very good performance at the weekend to be in with a chance of winning the game.’

It is clear to Steffen that his team will need to pull out all the stops in this home game to rein in their Darmstadt opponents. SV Elversberg are seeking to impress once again with bold, offensive football in front of a home crowd. ‘We want to play boldly and make things difficult for our opponents, but also defend well to keep Darmstadt’s attacks at bay early on’, the SVE coach said of their tactical plan. The team’s ongoing development is a key objective for Steffen: ‘We are continually working on ourselves. Our goal is to put in a good performance on Saturday and celebrate a success with our fans.’

The coach is optimistic about the upcoming duel: ‘I am looking forward to a good football match’. However, in terms of staffing, Steffen will still have to manage without injured players Freddy Jäkel and Tom Zimmerschied. Nevertheless, other than these two, all of the players are ready for action, making SV Elversberg well equipped for this showdown against the relegated Bundesliga team.
