SV Elversberg: spotlight on stadium renovations and sporting success

Success off the pitch, a good training camp, and finally points are back in play: SV Elversberg are hosting 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday for the weekend’s top game.

SV Elversberg have had a successful start to 2025 – not on the pitch, but rather with a milestone for the stadium renovations. The club announced that on Thursday morning, the new west stand was approved for spectator use by the Saarland authorities. This represents another step in modernising the stadium. Despite winter delays that impeded construction work, SV Elversberg remain on schedule. The club highlighted this in early December at the west stand’s topping out ceremony.

The new stand will be opened to 400 spectators for the first home game of the year on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., against 1. FC Magdeburg. ‘We will be able to offer space on the new west stand for 400 spectators at our first home game. The weather conditions in recent weeks have not been easy, but we still managed it. We hope to be able to provide space on the west stand for more and more spectators at every home game’, explained Marc Strauß, SVE’s administration and club development director.

To begin with, only standing places have been made available. Fans have been able to purchase tickets via the club website since Thursday morning, with prices starting at 15 euros. Welfare facilities – food, drink and toilets – will initially be in mobile form. The club is planning to complete the west stand during the first half of 2025, at which point it will be able to hold a total of 3,500 spectators.

This will consist of 300 VIP spots on the upper level, whilst the lower level will be almost entirely standing places. One particular highlight is the new standing VIP area, which is currently unique in the 2. Bundesliga. The top five steps of the standing terrace will be equipped with counters where spectators can place their food and drinks. Right behind this will be the VIP lounges, where visitors can choose from ‘brewery’ or ‘Italian’ themes.

Renovation work is also being carried out to the existing tubular steel stand that currently hosts away fans. These fans will be moved to the west stand in next few months, as soon as the necessary safety provisions are completed. After this, the tubular steel stand can be dismantled – which should also take place in the first half of the year. The back straight can then be modernised and equipped with a new VIP and business area.

The stadium renovation should be completed by the end of 2026, at which point it will have a capacity of 15,500 spectators. The current spectator record on Kaiserlinde is 11,500 fans, set in February 2024 at the derby against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The club is expecting 9,500 spectators for the match against 1. FC Magdeburg on Sunday, as the away fans are not using all of their ticket quota.

The sporting situation

Despite a strong season so far, SV Elversberg’s clear goal is to remain in the 2. Bundesliga. Coach Horst Steffen, whose team is currently fourth in the table, is curbing any speculation about the potential of promotion. ‘We want to stay in the league and we have not managed that yet. If we gain another twelve points, then maybe we will be able to turn our attentions elsewhere’, Steffen said in an interview with Saarbrücker ZeitungSVE have a challenging start to the second half of the season. A home game against 1. FC Magdeburg will be followed by difficult matches against 1. FC Köln, Karlsruher SC and Darmstadt 98. Steffen is being cautious about this difficult lineup: ‘They are all top league teams, and in the worst case scenario we could lose all of these games. We need to work in a very targeted, focused way.’

We want to stay in the league and we have not managed that yet. If we gain another twelve points, then maybe we will be able to turn our attentions elsewhere.

Trainer Horst Steffen

Despite the difficult task, the coach considers his team to be well prepared. Steffen has described the winter training camp in southern Spain as a complete success. ‘We had fantastic conditions and were able to do things on the training pitch in 20-degree temperatures that we could not have done in the weather at home. I think we are very well prepared for the second half of the season’, he said. As well as ideal weather and training conditions, he also mentioned the team’s mood: ‘Everything just worked – the hotel, the food, the weather and the great training conditions. I know it is very rare for a team to have this level of solidarity. It is no guarantee of winning games in the 2. Bundesliga, but this togetherness makes a lot of things easier.’

Midfielder Carlo Sickinger also sounded optimistic: ‘This week was quite simply wonderful. We worked very well and became a good amount more closely knit as a team’, he explained.

To kick off the second half of the season, in 1. FC Magdeburg SVE have an opponent that is one of the strongest in the league under coach Christian Titz. The teams are level pegging in the table on 28 points, making this a truly top game. Whilst SVE have one more win to their name, Magdeburg have only suffered three defeats, which is two fewer than Elversberg. In this crazy second division, a win in this match could push a team to the top of the table – whilst a defeat could mean dropping to ninth place. This is another reason why Horst Steffen’s approach makes sense: given this very unusual table situation, it would be an error to talk about promotion or other topics. Instead, it is about gaining points to achieve the first goal they have set: to remain in the league. Then they can begin dreaming of more. But no-one at SVE is in dreamland – instead, they are working hard, as the recent training camp shows.
