Ten years of elite javelin in Offenburg
On 21 June, the HYLO® Speerwurfmeeting in Offenburg is celebrating its tenth anniversary – and 2026 will see the ETSV‑Stadion once again playing host to top national and international athletes. This meeting has been a firm fixture on the global elite’s competition calendar for a decade and provides athletes with a vital stop-off en route to the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The meeting has established a reputation for both the sporting prowess on display and its atmosphere. The combination of international class and a close-up view of the athletes traditionally creates a very special feel at the ETSV‑Stadion.
Young talent in the morning, world elite in the afternoon
The competition traditionally begins with rising talent. The women in the B field and the junior U18 and U20 women will be competing from 10 a.m., followed by the men in the same categories from 11:30 a.m. This means that, once again, the meeting will provide a stage where young talent can showcase their skills in front of a large audience.
The main competition begins at 2:30 p.m. with the women’s event. Spectators can look forward to a top-quality duel: Sigrid Borge of Norway, currently ranked second in the world (65.00 m), faces American athlete Madison Wiltrout, who is sitting in third place with 63.88 m.
From Offenburg’s perspective, Lorena Frühn will be in the spotlight. The local hero is featuring in the A field at her home event for the first time, with a brand-new personal best of 56.07 m under her belt.
Strong men’s competition with familiar names
The men’s event also boasts a high-profile lineup. The Swiss duo of Simon Wieland and Franck Di Sanza are returning to Offenburg (as they did last year) and will be hoping to repeat their strong performance. German record holder Johannes Vetter will be seeking to exceed the 80‑metre mark for the first time this year after the season opener in Halle. The same goes for his club teammate Max Dehning.
However, other athletes stand as the favourites: Offenburg-trained thrower Ahmed Sameh Hussein (Egypt/83.10 m) and Anthony Flaming (Paraguay/81.56 m) are some of the most promising potential champions. There is a question mark over whether last year’s winner and 2022 European champion Julian Weber will compete, as he is struggling with back problems.
Sights set on Birmingham
The athletes will not just be competing for a Continental Tour Bronze Meeting win and the associated world ranking points. The qualification requirements for the European Championships in Birmingham will also be key: 60.50 m for the women and 83.00 m for the men.
Programme and services for spectators
As well as the sporting events, there will once again be a speed cup for children. Tickets are available online or on the door, with entry free for children aged up to 15. As in previous years, a donation will be made to the Freiburg Children’s Cancer Hospital. Food and drink are available.
