The past week has once again been full of highlights and a sporting challenges for our #hyloathletes. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.
SVE end a phenomenal season with a heart-stopping finale
On Monday evening (26 May 2025), the sold-out URSAPHARM Arena played host to the promotion/relegation playoff decider between SV Elversberg and 1. FC Heidenheim. After a 2:2 in the first leg, everything was still to play for – and SVE fought passionately for a historic promotion to the Bundesliga.
The match began at a fast pace, and Honsak gave Heidenheim an early lead (9th minute). Elversberg responded decisively and Fellhauer scored an equaliser (31st minute). After half-time, there briefly seemed to be a turning point when Asllani scored – but the goal was disallowed by the VAR. SVE continued to push, but Scienza scored in the fifth minute of extra time to secure Heidenheim’s place in the Bundesliga.
This was a huge disappointment and still hurts plenty the day after, but SVE can be hugely proud of what they have achieved. After a strong season in the 2. Bundesliga, the team played bold, passionate football and delighted with an attacking style of play. The dream of the Bundesliga was within reach, and the whole of the German footballing world has been caught up in the team’s impressive development.
The team have played a season that will not be forgotten – despite yesterday’s result. They have showed that they can compete at the very highest level, and will doubtless provide further sensation and excitement next season.
Congratulations and the utmost respect for an outstanding season!
More details of the match can be found in our post-match report.
Successful start to the European Championships: female German gymnasts secure team silver
The European Gymnastics Championships are being held in Leipzig from 26 to 31 May as part of the International German Gymnastics Festival. To kick things off on Monday, the German gymnastics team caused a stir by securing the silver medal in the team competition.
Helen Kevric, Janoah Müller, Lea Quaas, Karina Schönmaier and Silja Stöhr battled their way to second place for the German gymnastics team (DTB) with 158.396 points, behind Italy (161.930 points). Bronze went to France with 156.728 points. As well as the team medal, Germany’s female gymnasts qualified for numerous apparatus finals: Kevric finished first to reach the uneven bars final and will also feature in the all-around final. Schönmaier similarly secured a place in the all-around final, as well as the finals for the vault and floor.
‘I am hugely proud of the good performances put in by our team. We worked hard for this, and it has paid off’, Schönmaier said after the competition. National coach Gerben Wiersma sounded pleased:
We headed into the European Championships with the aim of finishing in the top five, but I did not expect a silver.
The European Gymnastics Championships run until Friday and Germany’s female gymnasts have other opportunities to win medals. Today (Tuesday) sees the men beginning their team competition and fighting for spots in the apparatus finals.
HYLO® Team Saar begin the Bundesliga season with second place
Early Saturday evening (24 May 2025) marked the start of the new 1. Triathlon-Bundesliga season in Kraichgau. Defending champions HYLO® Team Saar arrived with one clear mission in mind: to successfully retain their championship title. The team fought their way to a day win in the 2×2 pairs relay format and ultimately finished in second place behind Team Berlin.
David Lang and Jaspar Ortfeld, the first pair, put in a strong performance and eked out a solid lead. However, valuable time was lost in the changeover, putting the second pair of Johannes Vogel and Valentin Wernz under pressure. After attacking on the bicycle, Vokel was able to head into the run with a lead of a few seconds, but had to drop the pace on the second running lap due to muscular issues. Ben Bettin of Team Berlin ultimately secured the win for his team in an exciting sprint duel.
Metallart-Team AST Süßen took the remaining third place on the podium. Despite narrowly coming second, HYLO® Team Saar put in a strong team performance and demonstrated that they are once again potential title winners this season.
Sunday brought another highlight: Lasse Priester celebrated great success at the Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau. He secured the win with a time of 3:45:19 hours, a new course record. A strong comeback after his health setbacks last year!
Attentions are now turning to the next Bundesliga race, which the team will be attacking with renewed vigour.
Battle of the defences in Kempten – Hurricanes narrowly defeated
On Sunday (25 May 2025), the Saarland Hurricanes faced the Allgäu Comets at the Illerstadion in Kempten. In a match shaped by strong defending and turnovers, the Hurricanes ultimately lost 8:15.
The Hurricanes took advantage of a fumble by the Comets and took an 8:0 lead thanks to a pass from Parks to Keller. However, the home team quickly responded: Koslowski equalised, and then the Comets took the lead with a touchdown.
In the second half, the Hurricanes struggled to gain a foothold in the game. Multiple interceptions and fumbles prevented them from scoring any more points, whilst both teams dominated proceedings with their defence. Despite a fighting performance, the final score was 15:8 to the Comets.
The Hurricanes demonstrated plenty of commitment and creativity for much of the game, but were unable to consistently make use of their opportunities. They are now turning their attentions to their next match: on 7 June, the team will be playing the Straubing Spiders at home in the Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion in Völklingen and will be seeking to score points once again.
Hornets dominate in Heidelberg and remain in second place
On Saturday (24 May 2025), the Saarlouis Hornets faced the Hedgehogs at the Oliver Faust Field ballpark in Heidelberg. The team secured two magnificent wins in a successful double-header and thus remain in second place in the 2. Bundesliga Süd-West 1 table.
In the first match, everything went to plan in terms of the attack. The game was brought to an end after just four innings thanks to the 10-run rule, and the Hornets secured points with a smooth 10:0. Particularly pleasingly, Yannik Petry returned after four weeks out due to an operation and provided four strong shutout innings. Rookie Maxime Dupré also celebrated his Bundesliga debut with two hits in the starting lineup.
The team’s defence was similarly solid in the second match. Peter Mick did not allow a single run in five innings, then Ivan Razvan secured the win in the last two innings. On the attacking side, the Hornets initially struggled to get off the line, but ultimately secured a solid 6:0 win.
One particular highlight of the day: Peter Mick’s nine strikeouts put him at a total of 800 strikeouts in DBV leagues – a career milestone.
The team are now turning their attentions to their next home game against Mainz Athletics. This is a crucial duel, as Mannheim, Mainz and Saarlouis are currently battling each other for the top three spots.
Third class win in a row – Tarek stays at top of table
The 60th ELE Rally took place in Eindhoven on 23 and 24 May 2025 – as part of the Deutsche Rallye-Meisterschaft championship for the first time ever. Thousands of spectators watched the third race of the season, which also served as part of the Dutch championships. This was Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol and co-driver Henry Wichura’s first appearance at this event, ending with a class win in the amalgamated NC3/NC4 rankings.
The challenging route with city circuits and sand sections posed major challenges for the drivers. The very first special stage brought a scary moment when the pair noticed a traffic island on a roundabout too late and drove over it. Fortunately, the vehicle was undamaged, and they ended the first day top of their class.
To provide extra tension, the second day brought torrential rain. The sand sections became treacherous ruts, but Tarek and Henry stayed out of trouble and safely clinched their third win of the season.
We finally had the pleasure of rally driving in the rain again. These are my favourite conditions
Tarek explained after the race.
This success keeps the team at the top of the DRM Nationals rankings. However, things remain tight: Walter Gromöller also won his class and is just 0.24 points behind in second place. The second half of the season therefore promises to be an exciting battle for the title.
Things continue for Tarek in early August at the Rallye Mittelrhein, where he will once again be battling for championship points.
Successful start to the crown season for Ledermann
On 25 May 2025, Detligen (CH) played host to the Seeländisches Schwingfest – the official start to Swiss wrestling’s crown season. Michael Ledermann put in a strong performance in front of around 3,500 spectators and secured his third win.
The Schwarzenburg native began with a draw against Kilian von Weissenfluh, but then found his rhythm and defeated Severin Staub, Christian Rüegsegger and Simon Röthlisberger, all with the maximum score from grappling.
In the last round, Ledermann faced Matthias Aeschbacher, who he had drawn against seven times in the past. However, this time he left spectators in no doubt and fought his way to the win, securing his place in the final duel. Here he faced surprise contender Dominik Roth, who he defeated after 6:30 minutes with a scissor hold and his usual powerful technique.
Ledermann was grateful after his success: ‘I am still speechless about my surprisingly turbulent start to the crown season. I am delighted and grateful about the win.’
With this triumph, Ledermann is sending a clear signal for the season. He will be back in the sawdust ring on Saturday at the Mittelländisches Schwingfest in Uetendorf.
GT Masters: Schreiner and Valente overcome difficult conditions
Carrie Schreiner and the Land-Motorsport team began the new ADAC GT Masters season at the Dekra Lausitzring on 24 and 25 May 2025. She competed in the Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo2 with her teammate Alain Valente, kicking things off with a promising performance.
In the first race on Saturday, Valente began in 11th place and was initially able to move up to tenth. After the change of drivers, Schreiner took the wheel and fought her way to eighth. The team was temporarily in fifth place after pit stops and Schreiner even managed the fastest lap of the race. However, she lost a few spots in the last few laps and ultimately finished the race in 12th place.
The weather on Sunday added some further challenges. Heavy rain and a red flag made the race unpredictable, but Schreiner and Valente were not rattled and managed seventh place. ‘I am happy with seventh place in the rain today. It is just the beginning, we will keep working on it’, Schreiner wrote after the race.
With these results, the team has established a good foundation for the rest of the season. Things continue in two weeks’ time with the next race in Zandvoort, where Schreiner and Valente will once again be battling for points.
We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
