Our #hyloathletes have been back competing in various disciplines, with a focus on performance and development. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.
Gold rush in Rio – Varfolomeev and DTB team shine at World Championships
The Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Rio de Janeiro (20 to 24 August 2025) served as a showcase for elite German talent. For the German gymnastics team, this was a highlight of the year – and Darja Varfolomeev once again set the tone. The Paris Olympics champion dominated the individual competitions to secure a total of five gold medals. She showed her skill in the qualifying stages with top marks for all four apparatus and headed into the finals as the clear favourite.
Varfolomeev left no room for doubt in the all-around final: she defended her world championship title confidently with 121,900 points, leaving her competitors from Bulgaria and Italy in her wake. Her teammate Anastasia Simakova also made it to the final and finished in sixth – a strong result for her first world championship appearance.
Varfolomeev was also virtually unstoppable in the apparatus finals on Sunday. She won gold with the ball, clubs and ribbon – only losing out on a medal in the hoop final after an error. Simakova leapt in to secure the bronze – an emotional moment for the twenty-year-old, who performed impressively well in front of the Brazilian crowd.
The German group rounded off this successful weekend with eighth in the all-around competition and strong performances in individual routines. In the team ranking, calculated from the individual and group results, Germany were able to celebrate gold – a collective triumph for the national team.

Following this successful world championship performance in Rio, the team are now turning their attentions to their upcoming international competitions – including the 2026 world championships at home in Frankfurt.
Derby drama with a happy ending – SVE hold their nerve to clinch the win
On Friday evening (22 August, 6:30 p.m.), SV Elversberg celebrated an emotional home win at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde. Vincent Wagner’s team secured a 2:1 victory in their derby against 1. FC Kaiserslautern – thanks to a late goal by Freddy Schmahl in stoppage time. This was their second home win of the season and a match that left little to be desired in terms of intensity and excitement.
Elversberg dominated the first half, eked out various opportunities, and were rewarded for their efforts with 1:0 just before half-time thanks to Luca Schnellbacher. After the change of ends, SVE remained bold, but a disallowed goal and a subsequent penalty for FCK allowed them to equalise. The home team were not deterred and continued pushing for the win. And then, in the 90th+2 minute, it finally happened: after a corner by Felix Keidel and a deflected header by Carlo Sickinger, Schmahl was left perfectly positioned and fired the ball over the line.
Manager Wagner sounded happy after the game: ‘It feels great to actually make it 2:1.’ The spectators on Kaiserlinde celebrated exuberantly in an evening that not only brought three points, but also sent a strong message: Elversberg have established a position in the league and are ready to compete with the top names.

Füchse Berlin athletically and strategically strong
On Saturday (23 August 2025), Füchse Berlin made their mark at the SAP Garden in Munich – in both sporting and strategic terms. In the DHB Supercup against THW Kiel, the reigning champions secured their first title of the new season in a dramatic match. The official partnership with URSAPHARM was also officially expanded: HYLO® is now a Füchse Berlin Gold Partner and features on the team’s jersey.
10,500 spectators enjoyed a top-quality duel between the champion and the cup winner. The Berlin team began in frenzied form, leading 19:14 at half-time, but lost their rhythm slightly at the beginning of the second half. Kiel took advantage of this period and turned the game around, but Füchse fought back. A score of 31:31 prompted a penalty shoot-out that went in the capital team’s favour. Lasse Ludwig saved the final throw by Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu to secure the 34:33 win.
We are extremely happy to be starting the season with a title
coach Jaron Siewert said after the match.
The team also sent a strong message off the court: a new three-year contract is strategically expanding the collaboration between URSAPHARM and Füchse. The HYLO® lettering featured on their jersey represents a partnership built on shared values and long-term development.

Next event: Bundesliga opener against Bergischer HC on Sunday (31 August, 3 p.m.) in the Max-Schmeling-Halle.
Monday evening brought the next accolade: Füchse Berlin were named ‘team of the year’ at the SPORT BILD Award in Hamburg – in recognition of their first ever German championship win. Coach Jaron Siewert emphasised: ‘This is not an end, but rather a beginning for Füchse’.
Opening win and celebratory mood – HG Saarlouis begin with a statement
On Saturday evening (23 August 2025), HG Saarlouis celebrated a hugely successful start to the season in the Stadtgartenhalle. In front of 1352 spectators and while marking the club’s 30th birthday, Jörg Lützelberger’s team secured a 34:28 (18:13) win over Longericher SC Köln – one of their most ambitious competitors in the Süd section. The mood was electrifying right from the outset and play was intense and fast-paced. ‘We would have liked to have caused you more problems’, LSC coach Chris Stark said after the match, but sportingly congratulated them on a ‘well-earned win’.
Saarlouis established a strong foothold in the game, following an equally matched first few minutes (2:2) with an early 4:0 run to 6:2 and then controlling play right through to half-time (18:13). Their offensive cover and new attacking system were clearly working, whilst Schlingmann and then Fiedler provided stability in goal. After the change of ends, HGS once again upped the pace, extended their lead to ten goals (23:13) and were not thrown off by a brief run for Köln (28:22). Eberlein, Paetow, Weißgerber and Kornecki ensured clear dominance in the final stages. Young talents Philipp Petschick and Silas Geis were also put to use – with Geis chalking up his first official 3. Liga match.
Next match: Away game against TSG Münster on Saturday evening (30 August, 7:30 p.m.).
Hurricanes lose to Schwäbisch Hall in overtime drama
On Saturday afternoon (23 August 2025) at the Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion, the Saarland Hurricanes once again offered up a football showdown that provided excitement right through to the second set of extra time. Head coach Jakob Lawrence’s team suffered an incredibly narrow 39:41 defeat by the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns – after a match that had it all: strong attacks, changes of lead and a last-minute decider.
The Canes began in frenzied form. Quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp confidently headed up the attack, Benjamin Thompson and Spencer Corona carved out space, and after three touchdowns (including lovely passes to Evan Liggett and Marian Menden), Saarland were 23:6 ahead by the middle of the second quarter. However, Hall fought their way back into the game, closed the gap before the break, and straight after the change of ends, turned the momentum around with a kickoff return and a fumble that allowed them to equalise.
In the final quarter, Janis Kaiser equalised to 26:26 with a field goal – setting up the first overtime of the season. Both teams scored in extra time, leaving the scoreline tied twice. Ultimately, a failed snap on a two-point conversion by the Hurricanes secured the win for the away team.
Despite their disappointment, the team are turning their attentions forwards: Saturday (30 August, 4 p.m.) brings an away game against the Pforzheim Wilddogs in the KRAMSKI Arena.
Double win in Kalkar – Krohne dominates at HYLO® PDC Europe NEXT GEN
HYLO® PDC Europe NEXT GEN stopped off in Kalkar at the weekend (23 and 24 August 2025) for tournaments 12 and 13 of the current season. Both events were streamed live on HYLO® SPORT Website from the knockout stages and once again offered top-quality darts for the best talented young players from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein who do not have a Tour Card.
The spotlight was on Paul Krohne, who secured wins on both days of the tournament. On Saturday he won the final against Franz Rötzsch 5:4, and followed this on the Sunday with a 6:3 defeat of Tim Scholz. This puts Krohne up to second place in the overall rankings – behind Daniel Klose, who has retained the lead. Tim Scholz also made a big step towards the Super League with his appearance in the final.
After 13 of 15 tournaments, tension levels are high: the series finale take place on 13 and 14 September in Hildesheim – deciding who will jump up to the Super League and take a step closer to their Ally Pally dream.
Progress and podium – Team75 impress at Sachsenring
t the weekend (22 to 24 August 2025), Team75 Motorsport from Landstuhl impressed with two solid races in the sixth round of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany at the Sachsenring. Senna van Soelen managed a strong pursuit in race 112 on Saturday: the 19-year-old from Oostvoorne fought his way up from 14th to seventh place. ‘I was very happy with the car, and the team also did a fantastic job’, Senna said after the race. Michael Essmann, on the other hand, had to withdraw early – the pro-am driver from Rheine was foiled by a technical fault.
Sunday went significantly better for both drivers. Senna van Soelen drove a consistent race and took ninth place in the overall rankings. Michael Essmann put in a fighting performance, worked his way up from his starting position of 24th to 19th, and secured second place in the pro-am rankings. One of his competitors forced him off the perfect line shortly before the end, costing him the amateur lead. ‘That was annoying, but otherwise it was a great race’, Essmann noted.
Team boss Jennifer Leising took a positive view:
All in all, this was a very positive Sachsenring weekend for us. Now we are preparing for the races in the Red Bull Ring, where we will be back on the attack.
Next event: DTM weekend at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (12 to 14 September)
BIKE AID show their colours at the Deutschland Tour
For BIKE AID, the Deutschland Tour 2025 (20 to 24 August) served as a showcase for bold attacks, strong sprint performances and an exciting battle for the climbing jersey. The Saarland team, one of the few Continental teams in the field, were up against the international elite – for 741 kilometres across Germany from Essen to Magdeburg.
It was clear right from the three-kilometre prologue that the show would begin with the very first stage. Vinzent Dorn made his mark early, joining the breakaway group and topping the first sprint rankings. Milkiyas Maekele also impressed in the bunch sprint, leaving notable cyclists such as Kristoff and Bauhaus in his wake.
Dorn dominated the climb rankings in the second stage and drew level with Miguel Heidemann – both earning ten points in the battle for the KOM jersey. Anton Schiffer and Oliver Mattheis remained consistent in the overall rankings, whilst Maekele once again narrowly missed out on the top ten.
The main stage on Saturday shook up the field: Schiffer sprinted to 18th place and jumped up to 30th in the overall rankings. Dorn was not able to gain any further climbing points but remained in the running for the jersey. Once again, everything was to play for on the final day in Magdeburg – Dorn gained points once again, but Enzo Leijnse secured the jersey after topping the rankings more often.
Maekele sprinted as part of a hugely depleted breakaway group in the final stage, once again demonstrating his class. In the overall rankings, Schiffer was 31st, Mattheis 57th, Dorn 101st, Maekele 71st and Yoel Habteab 70th.
The Tour was not just valuable for BIKE AID on a sporting level, it was also an emotional highlight. ‘Our team’s performance was unreal’, was the upshot of the weekend.
Next event: Tour of Route Salvation (UCI 2.2) in Turkey from Tuesday (27 August 2025).
We are looking forward to upcoming events and appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
