DTB nominates world championship team – Schönmaier and Eder lead German lineup, trampoline pair impress in Varna
The last weekend in September brought two key dates for the German gymnastics team: Whilst Saarbrücken played host to the final world championship qualifier for artistic gymnastics, trampoline athletes put in solid performances at the world cup in Varna (Bulgaria).
World Artistic Gymnastics Championships qualifiers – final in Saarbrücken
On Saturday (27 September 2025) in the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle, Timo Eder and Karina Schönmaier both secured a win in the second qualifying round to head up Germany’s squad for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta (19-25 October). In the men’s competition, Eder impressed with a virtually faultless all-around performance (80.664 points), closely followed by Nils Dunkel, who secured strong individual scores on the pommel horse and parallel bars. Other world championship nominees were Artur Sahakyan and, to Saarland’s delight, Gabriel Eichhorn of TG Saar. The 21-year-old impressed with consistent performances and will be competing at the world championships for the first time.
The women’s squad for the world championships has also been set: Jesenia Schäfer and Silja Stöhr were selected alongside Schönmaier. Schäfer put in particularly solid performances in Saarbrücken on the floor and beam, whilst Stöhr impressed with her all-around versatility. The trio are a well-balanced team with international prospects.
The team are really looking forward to their first major competition on a global stage in this Olympic cycle
DTB’s sports director Thomas Gutekunst explained. ‘Spearheaded by top qualifiers Karina Schönmaier for the women and Timo Eder and Nils Dunkel for the men, we hope to be battling for top positions in Jakarta.’
Trampoline World Cup in Varna
At the same time, trampoline athletes were putting in solid performances in Varna. Ryan Eschke achieved an astonishing personal best (57.08 points) to put him through to the individual semi-finals, finishing in 15th place. In the synchronised competition, he and Janis-Luca Braun impressed with a high degree of synchronisation and finished fifth with 49.15 points – the best German result in the men’s event. Michael Gladjuk completed the trio with 33rd place in the individual competition.
The next stop for the trampoline elite is the world cup in Antibes (France) in early October, which brings more international competition.
SV Elversberg clinch home game against Kiel in final seconds
At Saturday lunchtime (27 September, 1 p.m.), SV Elversberg played host to Holstein Kiel in the URSAPHARM Arena for the eighth day of 2. Bundesliga play. In what was largely a very tactical match, SVE prevailed 1:0 – thanks to yet another a goal in stoppage time.
The match winner was 18-year-old Otto Stange, who converted a penalty in the 95th minute to secure the team’s third home win of the season. The youngster had just been shown a yellow card for an alleged deliberate dive, but a few seconds later Elversberg were awarded a penalty after an energetic foul against Amara Condé. Stange stepped up and scored the decisive 1:0.
Manager Vincent Wagner appeared relieved after the game:
Later on we gained momentum back after the change of ends […] Ultimately, the win was fortunate but not entirely undeserved.
Elversberg controlled significant portions of the match with a clear plan and lots of ball control. The crucial attacking momentum came late but left its mark – in the final stages, they managed to shake Kiel’s foundations and ultimately force the deciding goal.
A detailed match report can be found at HYLO® News.
Their next opponent is 1. FC Magdeburg – on Sunday (5 October, 1:30 p.m.) for an away game in Avnet Arena.
Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol wins DRM title for the second time
The last weekend in September (26-27 September) was the crunch point of the DRM Nationals with the ADAC Rallye Stemweder Berg around Lübbecke. For Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol from Saarbrücken, the title was at stake – with an incredibly narrow lead in the overall rankings. He and his co-driver Anna-Lena Mergen competed in the final race of the season and secured the class win to clinch the championship title.
The weekend got off to a rather bumpy start: after a braking mistake in the first special stage, the Citroën C2 Challenge initially refused to start – a setback that dropped the duo down to the bottom of the class rankings. However, Hamadeh-Spaniol and Mergen fought their way back to fourth place by Friday evening, and on Saturday took advantage of two leading teams dropping out to retake the lead. They defended their lead right to the end, finishing nearly two minutes ahead.
After a fairly messed up Friday, I never could have imagined that we would still have a chance at the championship title
Hamadeh-Spaniol said at the finish line. This tops a flawless season with six starts and six class wins, securing the DRM Nationals title for the second time after 2023.

Global presence for BIKE AID – podium in China, world championship appearance in Rwanda and farewell in Bliesgau
In the last week of September, BIKE AID could be found on three continents – with successes, development and an emotional moment back at home. Oliver Mattheis provided a sporting highlight at the Tour of Poyang Lake in China: after kicking things off with a stage win, he finished the eleven-day UCI 2.2 race in second place in the overall rankings. This tour is one of the longest on the international calendar and provided the team with some sporting challenges as well as a wealth of cultural experiences.
At the same time, Yoel Habteab and Milkias Maekele were lining up at the start of the Road World Championships in Kigali (Rwanda). These two young talents from Eritrea completed the U23 race across challenging terrain – a vital step in their development at the first ever world championships to be held on African soil.
BIKE AID could also be found in Europe: the riders battled wind and rain at the Tour du Mirabelle in Lorraine. Anton Schiffer put in the team’s best performance, finishing in 19th place. Just one day later, the team and fans came together for a group ride in Bliesgau. Amid late summer weather and a relaxed atmosphere, this marked not only an opportunity to watch World Championship final in Kigali, but also a farewell to Anton Schiffer – who is moving to World Tour Team Visma for next season.
BIKE AID‘s next stop is the European Championships in the south of France with Mattheis, Schiffer and Berlin, plus the Münsterland Giro on 3 October featuring Dorn, Bouvier and local hero Frie.
Royals begin with away win in Halle – successful start to the season
Saturday evening (27 September 2025) marked the start of a new Toyota Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL) season for the Saarlouis Royals – kicking things off with a win. Head coach Matiss Rozlapa’s team defeated an ambitious SYNTAINICS MBC 74:65 in Halle (Saale) to secure their first points of the season.
The Royals were focused right from the outset and stayed in the lead almost throughout. They were able to put Halle under pressure early with intensive defending and huge willingness to stay on the move. Although not everything went smoothly in attacking terms, their cohesive team performance and defensive stability made all the difference. ‘We played a focused defence today and that was the main reason for our success’, Rozlapa said after the match. At the same time, he emphasised that there was still room for improvement in terms of teamwork – an area that the team intends to keep working on.
This first win also provided an initial stocktake for the newly formed team, which began the season with six new additions. The Royals will be seeking to make their mark in the league and EuroCup and have set themselves ambitious goals: final four in the cup and semi-final in the Bundesliga.
This Sunday (5 October, 5 p.m.) brings their first home game against Osnabrück, followed by their EuroCup debut against Emlak Konut SK Istanbul on Wednesday (8 October). Both matches will be in the Stadtgartenhalle Saarlouis.
Strong week for Füchse – international and national success
Two matches, two wins – Füchse Berlin have impressed on both an international and a national stage this week. On Thursday (25 September), the Machineseeker EHF Champions League winners defeated KS Iskra Kielce 37:32 to move to the top of group A. Three days later, they chalked up a 35:23 win against ThSV Eisenach in the Max-Schmeling-Halle.
In Kielce, Füchse dominated the first half and were leading 22:15 by half-time. Dejan Milosavljev shone with 17 saves, whilst Mathias Gidsel was the top scorer with 13 goals. Tobias Grøndahl and Hákun West av Teigum also played a key role in the win. Coach Nicolej Krickau praised the team’s stable defending and passing pace:
The cooperation between Dejan and the defensive ranks went fantastically well. This meant that we were still in control when things started to get tight again towards the end.
Füchse put in another cohesive performance in their home game against Eisenach on Sunday (28 September). All of the court players featured on the scoresheet, with Gidsel scoring seven goals and Fabian Wiede impressing with three goals and two assists. Particularly worthy of mention are Matthes Langhoff for his defensive efforts and Lasse Ludwig in goal with eleven saves. Young talent Max Günther celebrated his first Bundesliga goal from the penalty line.
Thanks to six points from three Champions League games and a solid performance in the Bundesliga, Füchse can now head into their upcoming tasks with their heads held high. Wednesday (1 October, 7 p.m.) brings a DHB cup match against HSG Wetzlar – this time in the MBS Arena Potsdam.
HG Saarlouis stay at the top – derby defeat of Haßloch and Bundesliga arrival
On Saturday evening (27 September, 7:30 p.m.), HG Saarlouis played host to TSG Haßloch for a tradition-steeped duel in the Stadtgartenhalle. Jörg Lützelberger’s team prevailed 31:22 in front of 1,310 spectators to defend their position at the top of the 3. Liga Süd-West table. This marked their sixth win in six games – once again with solid defence and a fast pace.
The visiting Palatinate team initially held up well and remained within striking distance for the first twenty minutes. However, Saarlouis took advantage of greater numbers to eke out their first clear lead (13:8), with the scoreline at 18:12 by half-time. After the change of ends, HGS began a 4:0 run and increased their lead to ten goals. Although Haßloch managed to close this gap somewhat, Saarlouis remained in control. The final stages featured some of the team’s young talent – including Marko Jelicic in his third-division debut.
Coach Lützelberger praised the team’s defensive efforts and goalkeeper Daniel Schlingmann (14 saves), but also saw potential for improvement on the attacking side. Michel Fiedler saved two penalties and even scored himself in an empty goal to put things at 31:21 – the final score in what was a very successful evening.
On Monday, HGS also made the news off the court: they signed a Bundesliga goalkeeper from HC Erlangen, in the shape of Finn Zecher. The 25-year-old has periods in Lemgo, Lübbecke and Erlangen under his belt and should further increase the quality of the team’s goalkeeping. Zecher has signed a contract to June 2027 and joined training this week.
Sunday (5 October, 5 p.m.) brings a top game against similarly unbeaten HSG Dutenhofen-Münchholzhausen – the top team versus the second placed.
Barbarossa Prize fifth place for Carrie Schreiner with Girls Only team
On Saturday (27 September 2025), Carrie Schreiner lined up at the start of the ninth Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) race. Together with teammate Janina Schall, she drove the ‘Girls Only – GITI Tire Motorsport by WS Racing’ team’s BMW M4 GT4 (no. 146) at the 57th ADAC Barbarossa Prize in a four-hour race.
The pair began from fourth place in the SP8T class and put in a solid performance throughout the race. Janina Schall took the opening stint and initially kept the vehicle in the middle of the pack. Carrie took the wheel after the first pit stop. In the meantime, timings showed them dropping back to eighth place, although this did not reflect the race action. The team then fought their way forwards again and reached as high as third place in their class.
Carrie took over for the final section after a total of 23 laps. They ultimately finished fifth in the SP8T class and 33rd in the overall rankings – a solid result in a strong field with more than 100 vehicles. The overall win was clinched by Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, who triumphed alongside Chris Lulham in a Ferrari 296 GT3 in his GT3 debut.
Carrie Schreiner’s next race is just around the corner: 11 October brings the NLS season finale at the Nürburgring – the ‘Final Race of Champions’.
We are looking forward to upcoming events and appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
