Three medals for Germany – Raguwaran and Nicolai shine in Olbia
From 6 to 13 October 2025, Olbia in Sardinia played host to the World Boccia Challenger – an international tournament for the boccia elite. Anita Raguwaran and Boris Nicolai competed for Germany and sent a strong message with a total of three podium spots.
Things kicked off with the individual event: Boris Nicolai dominated the BC4 category and secured three wins in the preliminaries plus a confident final defeat of Gergo Gigacz from Hungary to clinch the gold. Anita Raguwaran competed in the BC4 women’s class and also reached the final after solid preliminaries. This produced a tight duel against Alexandra Szabo (Hungary) that ended 3:3 – Szabo’s better points difference secured her the gold, whilst Raguwaran won silver.
This was followed by the pairs competition, where Raguwaran and Nicolai competed together for Germany. The duo won three of their five preliminary matches and entered the finals on Monday as the second-placed team in their group. Once again, they faced the team from Hungary. After an evenly-matched game, the score stood at 3:3 – which in this case was enough to secure second place and another silver medal for the German team.
With a gold and two silvers, Olbia marked a successful stop-off en route to the next international challenge for these two national players from Saarland. Their next tournaments are already being planned.
Season finale for Carrie Schreiner at Porsche Sports Cup in Hockenheim
On Saturday and Sunday (11 and 12 October 2025), Carrie Schreiner competed in the final of the Porsche Sports Cup Germany at the Hockenheimring. She drove a Porsche Cayman GT4 RS for the PT Sports by Up2race team in the Sprint Challenge GT4.
Schreiner began the first race on Saturday from fifth place. After a mixed start and a brief period with the safety car, she battled her way back to fifth and defended this spot through to the finish line. The Saarland driver was unable to catch up with the front group, but put in a solid performance under pressure during the final laps.
The second race on Sunday began in promising form: Schreiner was able to move up a place into fourth position in the early stages. However, she was rudely knocked out of the race by a competitor in the eighth lap – leaving her with a DNF. This was an unfortunate end to the last racing weekend of the season.
Carrie Schreiner is now heading into the winter break, with no other race appearances currently scheduled.
Double home win for Füchse Berlin – Champions League thriller and Bundesliga gala
On Thursday (9 October 2025), the Max-Schmeling-Halle played host to a real handball epic: Füchse Berlin beat CS Dinamo Bukarest 32:31 in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League to continue their winning streak in that competition. Tobias Grøndahl converted a penalty ten seconds before the end to clinch the win after a foul that brought Mijajlo Marsenić to a halt. Mathias Gidsel shone with eleven goals, and Hákun West av Teigum and goalkeeping duo Milosavljev/Ludwig also impressed in an intense match with numerous changes of lead.
Sunday (12 October 2025) brought their next home appearance – this time against GWD Minden in the Bundesliga. Füchse dominated to celebrate a clear 42:27 win. Alongside Gidsel (10 goals) and Ludwig (13 saves), two new additions also provided some very special moments: Jonas Kofler and Felix Bernkop-Schnürch celebrated their HBL debut and each appeared twice in the goal list. This puts the Berlin team within shouting distance of the top of the table, just two points behind Flensburg.
Things continue on Thursday (16 October 2025) with their next Champions League home game against Kolstad Handball. The match begins at 8:45 p.m. Three days later (19 October) comes a Bundesliga away game against TVB Stuttgart.
Strong week for the Royals – EuroCup debut and win in top match
On Wednesday (8 October 2025), the Saarlouis Royals celebrated their EuroCup Women debut – and once again stood as a competitive representative of German basketball against internationally staffed team Emlak Konut SK from Istanbul. The Royals kept pace for much of the match in the Stadtgartenhalle, demonstrating tactical discipline and lots of energy. The away team’s experience only won through towards the end – with the match finishing 73:81. Head coach Matiss Rozlapa described this as a vital step in development, whilst captain Maggy Meynadier praised the team’s cohesion and learning curve.
Sunday (12 October 2025) then brought a top Toyota DBBL match against second-placed team TK Hannover Luchse. The Royals showed strong nerve to clinch the game 75:74. Emma Eichmeyer impressed below the basket, whilst Martha Burse played a key role with vital goals in the final stages. This narrow away win keeps the Royals at the top of the table and confirms their league ambitions.
Strength of nerve is still strength – and we demonstrated that today in impressive form
head coach Rozlapa said after the match.
Things continue on Wednesday (15 October) with their next EuroCup away game – which sees the Royals heading to Belgrade to face Crvena Zvezda. The match begins at 6 p.m. On Sunday (19 October), the Royals are welcoming the Angels from Nördlingen to the Stadtgartenhalle in Saarlouis for a Basketball-Bundesliga game.
Clear home win for HG Saarlouis – regaining table lead
On Saturday (11 October 2025), HG Saarlouis celebrated a clear 33:23 win against TV Kirchzell at the Stadtgartenhalle to jump back up to the top of the 3. Liga Süd-West table. In front of 1,415 spectators, a record for this season, Jörg Lützelberger’s team delivered their promised response to last year’s defeat – with commitment, stability and a clear game plan.
After just four minutes, the score was 4:0 to the home team, who established a foothold with high pace and consistent defence. Although Kirchzell were able to temporarily close the gap, Saarlouis remained dominant and headed into the break 17:11 up. In the second half, HGS consistently held on to their lead and even extended it in the final stages.
Goalkeeper Daniel Schlingmann provided a solid backbone with 14 saves, whilst Yves Kunkel scored twelve times and was virtually unstoppable on the attack. Philipp Kockler and Hubert Kornecki also played important roles. There was one very special moment: Wladi Kurotschkin celebrated his comeback after a long period of injury and was hailed by the fans.
This fourth home win in four home games means that HG Saarlouis remain unbeaten in the Stadtgartenhalle. Things continue on Saturday (19 October) with an away game against HSG Rodgau Nieder-Roden.
