Strong start to season return: HG Saarlouis narrowly win in Cologne
On Saturday (10 January 2026), HG Saarlouis began the second half of the third-division season with an away game against Longericher SC Köln. The Carl‑von‑Ossietzky‑Gesamtschule sports hall played host to an intense duel that the Saarland team ultimately clinched 30:29 after 60 hard-fought minutes – a start to the year that gave the table leaders vital points and a boost of self-confidence.
This success was built on a strong trio of goalkeepers. Daniel Schlingmann shaped much of the match and chalked up 18 saves, whilst Finn Zecher deflected two vital balls in the final stages. The crucial moment was ultimately supplied by Michel Fiedler, who saved a penalty by Lennart Nienhaus after the final buzzer to safeguard the away win.
The match was evenly matched at first, with both teams initially trying to establish a rhythm. Saarlouis found the foothold they were looking for towards the end of the first half. A 5:0 run shortly before the break put HGS significantly in front, then Sven Eberlein scored to put things at 12:17 by half-time.
Saarlouis lost some stability after the change of ends, whilst Longerich scored goal after goal and got back within striking distance at 20:21. However, HGS remained calm and continually found solutions when put under pressure, allowing them to consistently defend their lead. Towards the end, the final score seemed to be set at 27:30, but Köln closed the gap once again and forced a final penalty – which Fiedler ultimately saved.
This away win has given HG Saarlouis an early boost for the new year and confirmed their position at the top of the table.
Things continue for HGS on Saturday (17 January), when they are welcoming TSG Münster to the Stadtgartenhalle Saarlouis.
KSV Köllerbach knocked out in Weingarten after strong second-leg match
On Saturday (10 January 2026), KSV Köllerbach faced SVG 04 Weingarten for the second-leg quarter final match in the Ringer‑Bundesliga. The GrubArena played host to a hugely intense evening that ultimately saw Saarland knocked out with a score of 14:16, despite showing huge nerve.
Köllerbach got off to a difficult start but quickly gained a foothold in the competition. Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi was the first to make his mark with a technically superior win, before Valentin Seimetz – who had travelled straight from his brother’s wedding – provided an emotional moment with a win by fall against former Köllerbach wrestler Horst Lehr. Vasile Taran and Kerem Kamal also scored highly, meaning that KSV headed into the break 11:4 ahead, fully offsetting their first-leg defeat and score gap.
After the change of ends, Vasyl Mykhailov confirmed his impressive form this season to remain unbeaten in the second leg. However, Weingarten quickly regained momentum: Marcel Wagin turned round a tight fight against Andrey Shyyka, Olympic champion Nao Kusaka gained points as expected, and injured Hayk Melikyan was unable to make a major impact despite his best efforts. Manuel Wagin provided the icing on the cake in the final match to secure a 16:14 overall win for Weingarten.
Despite being knocked out, KSV Köllerbach put in a bold, cohesive performance that has provided a boost of confidence for the new season and the club’s upcoming 100th anniversary. The team showed strong character across both legs and remain a firm fixture at the top of the Bundesliga.
proWIN Volleys win point in Wiesbaden after hard five-setter
On Sunday (11 January 2026), proWIN Volleys visited VC Wiesbaden II for a 2. Bundesliga Frauen Süd match. The sports hall on Platz der Deutschen Einheit played host to an exciting duel that came down to the final tie break. Holz were ultimately defeated 2:3 but secured a vital away point.
The home team had a strong start to the match, winning the first set 25:20. However, the Volleys responded resolutely, stabilising their play and equalising with a clear 17:25. The match then remained close. Wiesbaden took the third set 25:22, but Holz responded once again and forced a deciding fifth set with a 20:25 win.
Things then remained open right through to the tie break. Both teams provided long rallies and changes of leads, until Wiesbaden secured the final point at 15:13. Despite the defeat, Holz put in a solid team performance and kept the match open for long periods. The MVP runner-up accolade went to Volleys setter Leah Lawson, who provided varying attacks throughout the match.
Things continue for proWIN Volleys on Saturday (17 January), when the Saarland team welcome VC Offenburg to Sporthalle Nord‑West.
Saarlouis Royals lose in Osnabrück, but remain in second
On Sunday (11 January 2026), Saarlouis Royals faced a 1. Damen‑Basketball‑Bundesliga challenge against GiroLive Panthers Osnabrück. The Saarland team had a difficult day at datos home of the Panthers and lost 65:73 to the third-placed team in the table. The Royals struggled to find their standard rhythm for much of the match, lacking their usually clear direction in terms of both team play and individual actions.
Osnabrück consistently exploited these periods, put the Royals under pressure early and controlled the pace of play. Although Saarlouis managed to close the gap numerous times, the Panthers continually responded with strong sequences and maintained a stable lead. Despite the defeat, Saarlouis remain in second place in the table, giving them a good starting point for the coming weeks.
There was some important staffing news to accompany the match: Lithuanian national player Egle Zabotkaite will be joining the Royals squad immediately. The 25‑year‑old guard player, who most recently played for Turkish club Koaceli, has signed a contract through to the end of the season and made her first appearance in Osnabrück.
The Royals will now be seeking to objectively process the match and draw the right conclusions. They do not have much time, as this Sunday brings a match at Stadtgartenhalle against BC Marburg – a direct competitor in the top four. This provides an opportunity for the team to demonstrate stability once again in front of a home crowd and build on their strengths.
1. FC Saarbrücken TT suffer narrow defeat in Dortmund
On Monday (12 January 2026), 1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis were narrowly defeated in a Tischtennis-Bundesliga (TTBL) match. Their away game against BVB Dortmund saw FCS TT losing 2:3 after an intense evening of play. Saarbrücken particularly impressed with strong singles performances, especially by Fan Zhendong, but ultimately lacked the clout they needed to turn the match around in the final doubles decider.
Despite this defeat, they are looking to the future: their focus in the Bundesliga now is a vital duel against Mühlhausen, whilst the Champions League brings their first encounter with Hennebont. As always, a detailed match report can be found at HYLO® News.
We are looking forward to upcoming events and appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
