Elversberg impress in last home game of the season

On Saturday (10 May 2025), SV Elversberg welcomed Eintracht Braunschweig to the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde for their penultimate match of the season. In front of a sold-out crowd of 9,105 spectators, SVE made their intentions clear in the promotion race and clinched a confident 3:0 (3:0) win in their final home game of the season.

The home team began the game in frenzied style and were put in the lead by Fisnik Asllani in the 11th minute. Just seven minutes later, Muhammed Damar increased the score to 2:0 following a precise cross from Asllani. Then, it was Damar once again who secured the final scoreline of 3:0 with his second goal. Elversberg dominated the first half as they pleased, leaving the Braunschweig away team no room to develop.

In the second half, SVE kept confident control of play and did not allow Braunschweig any noteworthy opportunities. Coach Horst Steffen sounded pleased after the game:

I am completely happy with how we approached and played this match. The boys played lightly and defended very consistently. It makes me happy that we could show once again, in our last home game of the season, how well we can play football. Now we are heading to Schalke and we will see what happens next.

This success consolidates SV Elversberg’s third place in the table and preserves their chances of being promoted to the Bundesliga. Sunday (18 May) brings the deciding away game against FC Schalke 04 to round off the season, where SVE could secure a spot in the promotion playoffs or even direct promotion itself.

More details and thoughts on the match can be found in our post-match report.

Saarlouis Hornets gain vital point despite absences

On Saturday (10 May 2025), the Saarlouis Hornets welcomed the previously unbeaten table leaders Mannheim Tornados for a 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Süd-West double-header – and made their sporting mark despite a few absences.

The Hornets dominated the first match right from the outset: pitcher Razvan Ivan shone with eight strikeouts, plus just one run, a double and a two-run home run afforded to the attackers. Their defence also remained faultless. The hosts clinched a clear 8:1 win with a total of eleven hits and huge commitment – marking Mannheim’s first defeat of the season.

The second game was more evenly matched. Andreas Zibret initially kept the Hornets in the game, until the Tornados gained five runs in the third and fourth innings. Jay Bueche calmed play down in the fifth inning but could not prevent the 2:6 defeat. The Hornets’ attack took too long to get off the ground, with a total of three hits and two runs.

As well as this sporting performance, there was also a palpably strong team spirit both on and off the field. Particular praise went to coach Courtney Miles, who led the team through both matches with clear coaching and positive energy. Despite being a few people down, the Hornets were passionate, focused and developed well.

This well-earned split against the top team from Mannheim shows that Saarlouis boast a competitive team with real cohesion.

Saturday (17 May) brings the next acid test for the Hornets from Saarland. They will be facing the Darmstadt Whippets with their heads held high.

Points and podium finishes: Team75 hold their own in Spa

From 8 to 10 May, the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany paid a visit the Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium – and for the Palatinate Team75 Motorsport, it was an intense, educational weekend of racing with a solid haul of points and multiple podium finishes.

The team’s three drivers showed fighting spirit in the Friday race: Senna van Soelen finished in ninth despite a slip-up early on, securing a top-ten result. Daniel Gregor, who started a long way back following technical issues during qualifying, fought his way up the field to 21st place and fifth in the rookie rankings – gaining the points accorded to fourth place thanks to how the rankings shook out. Michael Essmann completed the lineup with a faultless race to secure second place in the pro-am category.

All three drivers made further progress in the second race on Saturday. Senna van Soelen battled from 15th place to 12th and defended his position after a period with the safety car. Daniel Gregor once again showed strong nerve to move up from last place to 22nd, gaining another podium finish with third place amongst the rookies. Michael Essmann put in another solid performance and returned to the pro-am podium in third place.

Team boss Jennifer Leising was satisfied with the team’s development:

Michael had a good race with some lovely passing manoeuvres, Daniel  ploughed his way through the field very well, and Senna also impressed with some strong moves. Now we are looking forward to Zandvoort.

With a total of 14 positions gained, solid point wins and three podium finishes, Spa was a valuable milestone for the young Team75 trio on this Ardennes track with its rich tradition.

Successful start: Saarland Hurricanes clinch narrow win in Munich

On Saturday (10 May 2025), the Saarland Hurricanes ensured a successful start to the 2025 GFL season with a thrilling 28:27 defeat of the Munich Cowboys. In the exciting atmosphere of Munich’s Dantestadion, the two teams provided an intense duel that remained suspense-packed right through to the last second – and which the Canes clinched thanks to strong nerve and clever play.

The early stages of the match belonged to the hosts. The Cowboys dominated the first few minutes and had a 14:0 lead by the 22nd minute of play. However, the Hurricanes responded in impressive style: in the last two minutes before half-time, they achieved two touchdowns cleverly combined with a successful two-point conversion – and turned the game around to lead 16:14 heading into the break.

The match remained fast-placed and hard-fought after the change of ends. Both teams played with clear plans but also flashes of individual class. The Hurricanes ultimately clinched the game with a narrow but well-earned 28:27 victory – gaining their first two points of the new season.

There were particularly striking contributions by wide receiver Marvin Fuchs, who impressed with his safe hands and oversight, and Benjamin Thompson, who made his mark for the defence with a strong presence that had a major impact on the game.

With this success under their belts, the Canes are heading confidently into their home opener on Saturday (17 May) in Völklingen. The Pforzheim Wilddogs await – an ambitious new addition to the league that gained an impressive win in their first match against the Allgäu Comets.

Decimated team but strong performance: BIKE AID show fighting spirit in Switzerland

On Sunday (11 May 2025), BIKE AID competed in Switzerland’s Radsport Festival Märwil UCI-1.2 day race – albeit with a reduced lineup. After the energy-sapping Tour of Türkiye, the team had to manage without numerous riders who were out with injuries. This made Vinzent Dorn’s performance even more impressive – in very summery conditions, he established a place in a breakaway group early on and remained there for the entire race.

In the finish, he was not able to draw on tactical support from his team and had to play his hand alone. Nevertheless, Dorn managed a strong race and ultimately finished in 12th – a respectable achievement under difficult conditions.

After a short period to recover, BIKE AID will be turning their attentions to the next highlight on the racing calendar: Rund um Köln. This classic race steeped in tradition is celebrating its 107th year and promises both exciting professional support and huge enthusiasm for the thousands of amateur riders in the mass race. The event will be broadcast live on German TV – a perfect opportunity to cheer on Saarland’s professional team.

German gymnastics team: Rhythmic Europeans team set – Steinfeld gains bronze, Dunkel shines in Varna

The German gymnastics team have had an eventful week with the official rhythmic gymnast nominations for the European championships, strong performances at the World Challenge Cup in Portugal, and an impressive international showing for men’s artistic gymnastics.

Rhythmic gymnastics: European Championships team set for Tallinn

The German Gymnastics Association have nominated their team for the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships (4-8 June 2025) in Tallinn (Estonia). The individual competitors will be Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev, Anastasia Simakova and Lada Pusch, with Simakova and Varfolomeev competing in three apparatus each and Pusch two. Viktoria Steinfeld was named as the alternate. The group will be made up of Neele Arndt, Melanie Dargel, Olivia Falk, Helena Ripken, Anna-Maria Shatokhin and Emilia Wickert. Margarita Kolosov will be focusing on the World University Games and qualifying for the world championships in Rio de Janeiro this year.

Rhythmic gymnastics: bronze for Steinfeld in Portimão – Simakova narrowly misses out on podium

German gymnastics duo Anastasia Simakova and Viktoria Steinfeld competed at the World Challenge Cup in Portimão (Portugal) from 9 to 11 May. Simakova impressed with strong performances in the all-around competition, including a preliminary victory with the ball (297.70 points). She was ultimately just 0.25 points away from the all-around bronze – fourth place for the 20 year old from Schmiden. She also finished in fifth in the ball and hoop apparatus finals.

Viktoria Steinfeld consistently made the most of her opportunities in the ball final, securing the bronze medal with 27.20 points – behind Alina Harnasko (neutral) and Rin Keys (USA). She was delighted: ‘I am very happy to have won a bronze medal. I am grateful to have been able to represent Germany – and for my whole team.’

Silver for Nils Dunkel at World Cup in Varna

Nils Dunkel was on strong form at the World Challenge Cup in Varna (Sunday 11 May). The 28 year old impressed on the bars to clinch a silver medal with 13.533 points, beaten only by Turkish Olympic medallist Ferhat Arican. Dunkel put in a similarly strong performance on the rings and finished the final in fifth place.

Timo Eder rounded off the German team, but missed out on the finals. This competition with its high-quality lineup of countless top international gymnasts provided both athletes with a vital acid test for their upcoming season goals.

Fast pace but out of luck: eighth place for Carrie Schreiner

Last weekend (9-10 May), Carrie Schreiner was once again out and about on the legendary Nürburgring north loop. In the third race of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) championship, the 56th Adenauer ADAC Rundstrecken-Trophy, she lined up on the start in the ‘Girls Only’ team’s GT4 vehicle brimming with motivation and setting a strong pace.

Despite good conditions, the race did not go as hoped for Carrie and her teammates. Three damaged tyres continually set the team back over the course of the four hours. They ultimately finished eighth out of ten in this strong class – a result that does not really reflect their performance.

We were very fast once again, but with so many damaged tyres, there is not much more you can do

was Carrie’s matter-of-fact summary of the weekend.

The team already have their sights set on upcoming races – with the clear goal of converting the speed they can achieve into results once again.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
