Ocean’s Seven: Waschburger extends his lead
Early this morning (8 July 2025), Saarland’s open water swimmer Andreas Waschburger achieved another milestone en route to the ‘Ocean’s Seven’ crown: by successfully crossing the Tsugaru Strait in northern Japan, he has now completed five of the seven sections in this legendary series – once again demonstrating huge perseverance and mental strength.
Waschburger planned to undertake the regular 30-kilometre route, but strong currents forced him to make numerous course corrections – meaning that he ultimately swam around 45 kilometres. He began in the early hours of the morning at shortly after 4 a.m. local time with the water temperature at 22°C, dropping to 5°C during the attempt. ‘Waschi’ reached the finish line in 8 hours, 43 minutes and 21 seconds – significantly slower than the world record, but a remarkable achievement in extreme conditions and swimming nearly double the distance.
By completing the Tsugaru Strait, Waschburger has now overcome five of the seven Ocean’s Seven crossings – remaining on track with his total time and in fact even extending his lead. The next challenge is just four weeks away: crossing the Catalina Channel by Los Angeles.

Strong home appearance: Hurricanes secure vital GFL home win
On Saturday (5 July 2025), the Saarland Hurricanes were able to chalk up a vital GFL win at their home Hermann-Neuberger-Stadion in Völklingen. They managed to secure payback for their first-leg match against the Allgäu Comets with a final score of 54:38.
The Hurricanes were enthusiastic and effective in front of 835 fans. The attacking ranks scored consistently in every quarter, whilst for a long time the defence gave the away team few opportunities to develop play.
One particularly memorable moment was a lovely one-handed catch by Evan Liggett after a pass from Walter Kuhlenkamp directly into the end zone. A clever running move on the outside in the third quarter drew cheers from the crowd and highlighted the home team’s creative play calling.
The spectators named Paul Berberich the ‘man of the match’. The team are now heading into a well-deserved bye week, before the season continues on 19 July with a home game against the Berlin Rebels.

Double victory for the Hornets – strong, assured home performance
On 5 July 2025, the Saarlouis Hornets welcomed the Heidelberg Hedgehogs for a 2. Bundesliga Süd-West 1 double-header. In summery conditions, the team provided two clear wins and made their mark both on and off the pitch.
The team were focused right from the very start of the first match. Leadoff hitter Tatsunori Toguchi opened proceedings with a home run on the very first pitch – marking the start of a strong innings from an attacking perspective, including three runs. Pitcher Yannik Petry kept everything stable on the defensive side and allowed very little through. David Reichertz rounded things off with a three-run home run. The end result: 10:2 to Saarlouis.
In the second match, Ivan Razvan dominated proceedings on the mound and did not allow a single base runner in the first five innings. Only an error and a brief brunt prevented a no-hitter, but the shutout stood firm. The attacking ranks were versatile and consistently exploited opportunities – earning 10:0 as their well-deserved reward.
The programme of activities, with spectacular helicopter action and abseiling manoeuvres, created a unique setting for a day of play that will remain in the memory for both team and spectators.
The Hornets remain in the same spot in the table for the time being, but their next match promises some action: this weekend the team are playing away against Mainz Athletics – the current leaders and a direct competitor in the top part of the table.

Team75 overcome setbacks at the Norisring to stay in the running
For the fourth weekend of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany season, on the Norisring in Nuremberg from 4 to 6 July 2025, the Palatinate Team75 Motorsport faced a lot of obstacles – but still put up a good fight in the track.
Saturday ended on a definite dampener: pro-am driver Michael Essmann crashed heavily into the crash barriers shortly before the finish following contact with a competitor. He was unharmed, but sadly his vehicle suffered substantial damage. Senna van Soelen secured eighth place in the race, whilst Daniel Gregor fought his way up to 19th from a difficult starting position. Essmann was second in the pro-am rankings up until his accident, and this place was then officially awarded to him after the race – a small consolation.
On Sunday, Essmann was out due to injury and Daniel Gregor had to withdraw early following contact with another vehicle. Senna van Soelen chalked up the total for the day: starting from 16th place, he made up several spots to ultimately finish in tenth. This secured valuable points for the team and marked a positive end to the weekend.
‘We made the best of it’, was Senna van Soelen’s summary after the race – aptly summing up the team’s appearance on the Norisring.
After a brief summer break, the team will be turning their attentions to the fifth round of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup: things continue on the Nürburgring (Sprint) from 8 to 10 August 2025, where they will be seeking to score more points as part of the DTM.
Narrowly missing the podium: Schreiner fourth at NLS-Light
On Saturday (5 July 2025), Carrie Schreiner and her teammate Janina Schall lined up at the start of the fifth race in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Meisterschaft (NLS-Light) championship as part of the Girls Only team. This four-hour race on the north loop once again offered challenging conditions and a tight field – with the duo ultimately only one detail away from achieving a top result.
They started in seventh position in the overall field and third in the SP8T class, with Schreiner taking the first stint and quickly moving up to fifth place overall and second in their class. After achieving a consistent pace, the team were on track to reach the podium at various points. However, a time penalty awarded as a result of a pit stop that was too short ultimately cost them this spot in the overall rankings.
However, fourth place in the overall rankings and third place in the SP8T class is still a solid result – even if missing out on the podium is a definite disappointment. Schreiner was defiant: ‘So much potential, so few results – but on we go.’
Their next stop: Carrie Schreiner’s next race is coming up this weekend – as part of the ADAC GT Masters.
Trampoline World Cup: DTB impress in individual and synchronised
At the third FIG World Cup of the trampolining season in Coimbra (Portugal) on 5 and 6 July 2025, the German gymnastics team (DTB) were on competitive form with various appearances in semi-finals and finals plus a national difficulty record.
In the synchronised competition, Fabian Vogel and Caio Lauxtermann impressed in the preliminary round with more than 52 points and qualified for the final in fourth position. However, an unclean start in the freestyle section caused some issues that brought their routine to an end early – and left them in sixth place. Nevertheless, national coach Katarina Prokesova praised this performance and emphasised that situations like this are a learning opportunity, with a view to the upcoming World Games in China.
Matthias Schuldt secured the German team’s best result in the individual competition. He finished 13th in the top 24 with 58.23 points and performed a particularly difficult routine worth 19.2 points – a new German difficulty record. Lauxtermann followed in 15th place, whilst Vogel narrowly missed out on the semi-final. For the women, Aileen Rösler finished in 19th and remained consistent despite a few wobbles.
Thanks to a final appearance in synchronised trampoline, various individual finishes in the top twenty, and new momentum for creating routines, the team gained vital experience on the national stage.
DTB: Varfolomeev victorious at first world championship qualifier in Fellbach-Schmiden
On 4 July, Fellbach-Schmiden played host to the first national qualifier for the Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships, which are being held in Rio de Janeiro from 21 to 24 August. Olympic champion Darja Varfolomeev was top of the pack with 116.800 points – despite some small apparatus drops with the hoop and ribbon. Second place went to her teammate Margarita Kolosov, who scored 112.950 points.
Both athletes presented revised routines that have already been tailored to the new international scoring requirements. Kolosov appeared satisfied with her score, but mentioned potential for improvement to the routine. European championship medallist Anastasia Simakova only completed two freestyle rounds in Fellbach: she lagged behind the leaders with the ball (28.050 points) and the ribbon (27.750 points).
The second world championship qualifier is set for the end of July. The results of these two events will be taken into consideration when DTB selects the German gymnasts for the world championship team.
BIKE AID win stage and finish second in team rankings
From 3 to 6 July 2025, the Saarland continental team BIKE AID competed in the Sibiu Cycling Tour in Romania – a traditional stage race in the UCI 2.1 category. BIKE AID put in a strong, cohesive performance with a stage win for Anton Schiffer, three riders in the top 25 in the overall rankings, and second place in the team rankings.
Anton Schiffer provided the sporting highlight in the third stage. After an unfortunate ride the previous day, marked by crashes and malfunctions, he then secured his first professional win on the final climb into Păltiniș. This performance highlights his upward trend – just a few days after finishing third in the German championships and following a strong spring, he is one of the most prominent riders in his class.
BIKE AID also made its mark in the overall rankings: Schiffer ended the Tour in fourth place, Oliver Mattheis followed in twelfth, and Dawit Yemane rounded off the strong team performance in 23rd. BIKE AID was thus one of the most formative teams on the Tour. Second place in the team rankings served as impressive confirmation of this, behind only the Q36.5 World Team.
The Sibiu Cycling Tour remains a hugely symbolic race for BIKE AID. The team’s first win there was in 2020. This latest success marks a new chapter that promises an optimistic outlook for the second half of the season.
SuperMoto IDM tight at the top with clear favourites
Marcus Class made his mark in the S1 class at the fourth race of the International German SuperMoto Championship on 5 and 6 July 2025 in Cheb, Czech Republic. During this technically challenging course near the German-Czech border, he confidently secured wins in both races to shake up the championship outlook.
Class quickly pulled away from the field in the first race. Behind him, Colin Beischroth, Jan Deitenbach and Bernhard Hitzenberger engaged in an intense battle for the other top spots. In the second race, Class once again set the pace and kept a firm hold on the front spot. Beischroth and Deitenbach followed on the other podium places. Hitzenberger, who recently performed well in Lignières, failed to meet expectations this time around.
This means that things are hotting up in the championship race: Jan Deitenbach has kept a hold of the overall lead so far, but these two wins mean that Marcus Class is closing in. There are currently only a handful of points separating second and fifth place – everything remains up in the air.
The Cheb course, known for its quick asphalt stretches and challenging off-road sections, once again demanded a lot from drivers. Free entry and proximity to the border also made the event a popular day out for numerous German fans.
Preparations continue: restructuring at HG Saarlouis
On 6 July 2025, HG Saarlouis officially began preparations for the upcoming 3. Liga Süd-West season. With Jörg Lützelberger as their new head coach, the team are entering a period of restructuring to provide new momentum on both a staffing and sporting level.
In addition to the established ranks, HGS is welcoming two new back-court players: Hubert Kornecki and Sven Eberlein are gradually being incorporated into the team and should ensure more versatile play in the future. For the next few weeks, the team will be focusing on cooperation between core players, young talent and new additions – with the aim being to create a strong, cohesive team.
Six test matches are planned before the start of the season, against opponents including Illtal, Oftersheim/Schwetzingen and HCOB Oppenweiler. 12 July marks HGS’s first official match with their new coach, against Handballfreunde Illtal in Uchtelfangen – forming part of a joint charity campaign in aid of the Saar Children’s Hospice and Palliative Team.
HG Saarlouis is starting a new season with a committed approach, a clear training schedule and its sights set on both new and familiar opponents in the Südwest division.
