Four starts, four podium finishes: Waschi delivers
From 3 to 7 February 2026, Molveno in Italy played host to the European Ice Swimming Championship – in water temperatures of 1.39 to 2.5 degrees Celsius. Andreas Waschburger featured as part of the German Swimming Federation national squad for the first time and ended the European championship with four podium finishes.
He defended his 2024 European championship title in the 500-metre freestyle and also confirmed his status as reigning world champion. He also stayed on track for the 250 metres, clinching the silver (as he did at the 2025 world championships). He won the 1,000-metre race for the third time in the row, continuing his title streak from the 2024 European and 2025 world championships. ‘The 1,000 metres is always a challenge. Your skin is burning, it’s hard to breathe – but that is why I love this distance’, he said after the race. To round things off, he and the German team won bronze in the 4×250-metre mixed relay.
The run-up to the European championships was shaped by the birth of his daughter Mila, a rather unusual way to prepare. ‘The last few weeks have been dominated by the hospital, birth, little sleep – but we have still tried to be fair to all three of us – this European championship was a special one’, he noted. A full overview of Waschi’s European championship week can be found at HYLO® News.

Home streak ends: SVE lose to Hertha
Saturday (7 February 2026) brought SV Elversberg a match where many things went to plan – except for the result. SVE had long periods of control and some clear opportunities against Hertha BSC but nevertheless were ultimately defeated 0:3.
Elversberg got off to an active start and eked out numerous good opportunities early on but were foiled several times by Hertha’s goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. Shortly before half-time, the away team took advantage of a set piece to take the lead. SVE continued to dominate play after the change of ends, but Hertha consistently exploited their few transitional moments and scored two more goals.
As manager Vincent Wagner summarised things after the match: ‘We had enough opportunities, but sadly failed to score goals.’
A full match report can be found at HYLO® News.
Things continue for SVE on Saturday evening with a floodlit away game against Dynamo Dresden.
HG Saarlouis retain spotless home record – tenth home win in a row
HGS continued their impressive home win at the Stadtgartenhalle Saarlouis on Saturday evening (7 February 2026). The team celebrated their tenth home win this season with 34:25 against the Melsungen Bundesliga reserves.
The week before the match was marked by missing players: after Hubert Kornecki’s serious injury, Sven Eberlein was also ill, as (briefly) was Philipp Kockler. This meant that defending responsibilities had to be reallocated. Captain Tom Paetow established an early lead and scored four of the first six goals. Silas Geis, Yves Kunkel and Lars Weißgerber also made their mark.
After an evenly matched first half (17:14), Melsungen initially kept pace and equalised several times. The match remained open until 20:20 – when Saarlouis started their crucial run: the away team failed to score a single goal between the 40th and 52nd minutes, whilst HGS pulled ahead to 30:20. Goalkeeper Finn Zecher played a vital role at this point.
During the final stages, youth A team player Alexander Zwing made his third-division debut and immediately scored to put things at 31:22. Right wing Philipp Petschick also chalked up another goal shortly before the end. After the match, coach Jörg Lützelberger praised his team’s cohesion and particularly highlighted the performances of Tom Paetow and Silas Geis.
Things continue for HG Saarlouis on Saturday (21 February) with an away game against TSG Haßloch.
HG Saarlouis‘s overall approach is about more than just sporting success, as sports director and handball legend Markus Baur explained in our All Eyes On interview.
Saarlouis Royals lose to Keltern – second place remains secure
Saarlouis Royals faced Rutronik Stars Keltern in the Stadtgartenhalle on Sunday (8 February 2026) for a DBBL match – the reigning cup winner versus the reigning champion. As in their previous duels this season, the title favourite prevailed (65:76). Although defeated, the Royals have retained their vital second place in the table.
Despite this defeat, head coach Matiss Rozlapa noted some clear areas to tackle in the coming weeks. The team displayed good sequences at various points, but he also made it clear that there was still room for improvement in both attacking and defence. ‘We have areas that need some targeted work’, he said after the match.
Egle Zabotkaite’s back injury is currently a cause for concern – an examination will show how severe it proves to be. The club and team are hoping that this key player will be returning soon. We would also like to wish him a speedy and full recovery.
Things continue for the Royals on Friday at 7 p.m., when the Saarlouis team will be welcoming the next team down in the table from Hanover – a particularly important duel in the battle for second place and its home advantage in the playoffs.
BCB win 5:2 and stay on track for the final four
1. BC Saarbrücken‑Bischmisheim made their mark in the 1. Badminton‑Bundesliga on Sunday (8 February 2026). They secured a 5:2 home win in the Joachim‑Deckarm‑Halle against SC Union Lüdinghausen, keeping them well on track for the final four.
Despite some lineup changes (with replacements including Leonie Wronna in the women’s singles and Jonas Scheller in the second men’s singles), BCB were solid and controlled much of the match. The team put in a cohesive performance and were not knocked off their stride by the last-minute adjustments. ‘The changes had no impact on the team’s cohesion’, was the view afterwards.
This win allowed BCB to confirm their strong position in the table, keeping them in second place and fully on track for the final four. This season highlight is in Saarbrücken on 18 and 19 April.
Things continue for Bischmisheim on 7 and 8 March with two more home games in the Joachim‑Deckarm‑Halle.
Home epic: proWIN Volleys wine five‑set thriller against Altdorf
On Saturday evening (7 February 2026), proWIN Volleys TV Holz supplied an intense 2. Bundesliga Süd duel against second-placed team VC Altdorf in the Multifunktionssporthalle on SPORTCAMPUS Saarbrücken. The Saarland team prevailed 3:2 after 125 exciting minutes, confirming their strength at home.
Holz got off to a strong start and took the first set after level-pegging. The team clearly dominated the second set, upping the score to 2:0. Altdorf then gained a better foothold in the match, reduced their errors and won the next two sets on tie breaks. Finally, proWIN Volleys harnessed their full strength once again to win the decisive point for a 15:12 home win.
This means that the Saarland team have added two extremely valuable points to their ledger, putting them a vital step closer to securing a spot in the middle of the table.
Setter Leah Lawson was named most valuable player for her performance. Simona Dammer was awarded the MVP accolade for the away team.
Things continue for the proWIN Volleys on Friday (14 February 2026), when TG Bad Soden will be visiting the Multifunktionssporthalle on SPORTCAMPUS Saarbrücken.
GT Winter Series: Carrie Schreiner finishes fifth in Portimão
The start of the GT Winter Series in Portimão (6-8 February 2026) kicked off an intense year of motorsport for Carrie Schreiner. She competed for Tresor Attempto Racing in an Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II alongside her teammates Ariel Levi and Florian Scholze. The six-hour event on the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve track saw the trio face changing conditions and a strategically challenging race format.
Starting driver Ariel Levi quickly moved the car up from fifth place to second. Carrie took over after the first pit stop but had to send the car back out from further behind. A drive-through penalty after a pit stop that was too short also cost them time. Carrie, Levi and Florian Scholze swapped numerous times as the race continued, whilst periods of rain and the mandatory minimum pit time of 35 minutes in total shaped their strategy.
Carrie explained after the race that the time penalties for pit stops that were too short and the mandatory minimum of 35 minutes in total in the pits made the race complicated and meant that for a long time, it was unclear where the team actually stood.
After six hours, the team crossed the finish line in fifth place – just a few seconds behind the fourth-placed car.
Carrie Schreiner will be back in action in March, when the GT Winter Series continues in Aragón (Spain).
We are looking forward to upcoming events and appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
