What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

The past week has once again been full of highlights and challenges for our #hyloathletes. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.
HYLO® Open 2024: successful tournament with wins for four countries
The HYLO® Open was held at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken from 29 October to 3 November 2024. This international badminton tournament attracted athletes from all over the world and offered six days of exciting matches and top-quality sport. The event was accompanied by media coverage on our website and social media channels. Videos covering all days of the tournament are still available on our event page.
German women’s doubles pair Linda Efler/Thuc Nguyen made it to the semi-final of their home tournament, whilst men’s doubles team Daniel Hess/Marvin Seidel reached the quarter-final. Unusually, the finals day was dominated by Europe rather than Asia (as is often the case). Players from England, Denmark and France all secured titles, with just the women’s doubles seeing a win by the pair from Taiwan. Other details of the finals and the four countries’ winners can be found in our news report.
We are already looking forward to the next HYLO® Open 2025 from 28 October to 2 November 2025 – back at Saarbrücken’s Saarlandhalle and back with HYLO® Sport.
Multi-match week with mixed feelings for SVE
SV Elversberg had an eventful week with mixed feelings. On Tuesday (29 October 2024), SV Elversberg faced reigning champions and cup winners Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the DFB Cup. Although SV Elversberg were out of luck, they put up a very strong fight. Despite a committed performance, Elversberg were defeated 0:3 by the top-division club. Nevertheless, Horst Steffen sounded satisfied: ‘We kept pace well and did not hide ourselves away’. More details of the cup match can be found in our detailed report.
Saturday (2 November) saw a 2. Bundesliga away game against last-placed team Jahn Regensburg. After four league games without a loss and good results against some notable opponents, expectations were high – which made the outcome an even more bitter end to the team’s multi-match week, when SVE were defeated 0:1 in a hard-fought game. ‘We did not need to lose this game today’, a disappointed Horst Steffen said after the final whistle. Read more in our detailed report.
However, their next opportunity to do better is on its way: new table leaders Hannover 96 are coming to the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde on Sunday (10 November).
Intense week for Füchse Berlin with highs and lows
Füchse Berlin had an intense week with two crucial games. On Thursday (31 October 2024) they faced CS Dinamo București in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League. Despite a narrow 19:18 lead at half time, Füchse were ultimately defeated 31:38 for their third Champions League defeat in a row. The team from Berlin particularly struggled on the defensive side of things. Coach Jaron Siewert appeared disappointed: ‘We did not establish a good defensive foothold in the game. We started poorly in the second half and immediately allowed Bucharest to achieve a 5:1 run.’
On Sunday (3 November), Füchse Berlin welcomed THW Kiel for a top game in the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga (HBL). In a thrilling match, the Berlin team prevailed 35:26 to bring THW Kiel’s winning streak to an end. The capital team’s decisive win on home turf, against their league competitors and record champions from Kiel, made a real mark. The 9,000 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle enjoyed a game brimming with willpower and attractive handball.
The rear lineup of Mathias Gidsel, Lasse Andersson and Nils Lichtlein particularly impressed at this fourth home win in the HBL for the capital team. Left winger and penalty shooter Tim Freihöfer was also once again in top gear. Coach Jaron Siewert’s team thus remain in the race for the top end of the Handball Bundesliga table.
Next comes the international break, with a few of Füchse‘s professional players away with their national teams. After away games on 14 November against Rhein-Neckar Löwen (Cup) and in Hamburg (18 November), the team’s next home game is on Thursday 21 November: Dinamo București are coming to Berlin for a Machineseeker EHF Champions League match at 6:45 p.m.
Royals lose after strong first half
On Friday (1 November 2024), the Saarlouis Royals suffered an away defeat by WINGS Leverkusen. The Royals lost 84:71 on the sixth day of play in the Toyota 1. Damen Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL). After a strong first half, which saw the Royals heading into half-time 29:41 up, both teams emerged from the locker room in very different form. WINGS Leverkusen dominated the second half and turned the game around in their favour.
The Royals began playing with stronger defence and were able to gain frequent ball possession. Despite good defensive work and fast play, the Royals’ second-half shots on goal were all too often off target. The hosts took advantage of their on-court dominance and gave the Royals few second chances. Coach Matīss Rožlapa saw some room for improvement after this away defeat and has resolved to work on the issues that emerged.
This result puts the Royals at seventh place in the table. Next up is the international break. The Saarlouis Royals’s next game will be against TK Hannover Luchse on 17 November at 3 p.m. in the Stadtgartenhalle.
Narrow away defeat for the proWIN Volleys
On Sunday (3 November 2024), proWIN Volleys faced SV Lohhof in a 2. Damen Volleyball-Bundesliga Süd away game. The Volleys were defeated 3:2 in an exciting match with sets of 18:25, 26:24, 25:15, 21:25 and 15:9. The Volleys at least take one point home.
The Saarland players began strong to win the first set 18:25. In the second set, they were unable to retain an early lead and narrowly lost 26:24. The third set went decisively 25:15 to SV Lohhof, who broke down the Volleys’s play structure with powerful serves. In the fourth set, the proWIN Volleys fought their way back to win 21:25. The deciding fifth set saw the home team showcase their strength to secure a 15:9 win.
The title of most valuable player (MVP) went to Mikaela Stevens (#13) in the visiting Saarland team, whilst the gold medal on the Lohhof side was awarded to Sanja Dusanic (#15).
The Holz Volleys’ next league game is on 17 November at Sportcampus Saar in Saarbrücken, against TSV TB München.
