TG Saar battle for final place despite defeat

On Saturday (16 November 2024), TG Saar suffered a defeat by KTV Straubenhardt in the Deutsche Turnliga (DTL) league. The visiting team dominated their last home game of the season right from the outset and gained a clear 8:69 win. The visitors laid the foundations for their success on the floor (1:7) and pommel horse (0:12). The championship favourites dominated on the vault and horizontal bar, which ended with a score of 0:16. TG Saar put in a fighting performance but were unable to make up for errors made by key gymnasts.

Despite this defeat, TG Saar could still gain a finals place at their ‘home’ final in Saarbrücken on 7 December. To secure a place at the final in front of a home crowd, they need to beat Eintracht Frankfurt on the last day of competition this season on 30 November. The team are heading resolutely into the decider and are also hoping for plentiful support from their home fans in order to preserve their chances of making it to the final.

The TG Saar second team, on the other hand, were able to gain a vital win and add the cherry on the top of their final. On the same day, before the first team’s competition, they secured a 34:27 victory over KTG Heidelberg in the Dillinger Kreissporthalle on the final day of competition and thus safeguarded their place in the 2. Bundesliga.

After a bumpy start and falling 0:5 behind, the Royals fought their way back into the game. By half time they were leading 46:37. After the break, Saarlouis Royals set off on an 8:0 run to further extend their lead, leaving the away team no more opportunities to get back in the match. The final score was a well-deserved 79:64 win and fourth place among the league’s top teams.

The quarter results were 24:26 | 22:11 | 14:12 | 19:15.

Füchse Berlin: cup drama and league draw

Füchse Berlin had an intense week with two crucial games. Thursday (14 November 2024) saw a DHB Cup last-sixteen match against Rhein-Neckar Löwen. Füchse were defeated 29:30 in a gripping match at the SNP Dome in Heidelberg. Despite a strong first half where they led 16:12, the Berlin team were unable to hold onto their lead and exited the cup. Füchse and their top scorer Tim Freihöfer (eight goals) failed to preserve their comfortable lead, especially in the second half, in order to take a potential win home.

Just a few days later on Monday (18 November 2024), Füchse faced another challenge in the Handball Bundesliga league. Their away game against HSV Hamburg ended in a 29:29 draw. After a dominant first half that saw Füchse leading 18:12, they lost their stride in the second half and ultimately had to make do with just a single point.

In terms of attacking, it was the capital team’s two wingers who particularly shone: Tim Freihöfer (eight goals) and Tobias Reichmann (six goals) also converted every single one of their penalties. Nils Lichtlein was also one of the most successful Füchse players with six goals. On the defensive side, the Berlin team were once again able to count on the Serbian national goalkeeper: Dejan Milosavljev achieved a season personal best with 16 saves. The German championship runners up remain at fourth place in the table after ten days of play.

Things continue on Thursday (21 November), when Füchse are welcoming Dinamo Bucuresti to their home Max-Schmeling-Halle for a Machineseeker EHF Champions League match. Then, on Sunday (24 November), TVB Stuttgart are heading to Berlin for an HBL match, alongside Children’s Handball Day.
