What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

The last week on hylo.sports social media channels has been dominated by the HYLO®BADMINTON OPEN 2023. Nevertheless, other #hyloathletes have also been active in their respective disciplines. We take a look back at last week’s events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

World-class badminton and enthusiastic spectators at the HYLO® OPEN in Saarbrücken

The BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament in Saarbrücken offered six days of exciting, spectacular and emotional moments with top international players. From 31 October to 5 November, fans of the world’s fastest racket sport could experience inspiring top games, live and up close, at the Saarlandhalle and across the world via our livestream. We followed the entire home tournament for the top German athletes and players of BC Bischmisheim, and as well as daily live broadcasts and the sporting highlights of the day, we also offered plenty of glances behind the scenes and insights into the people that make a tournament like this happen as part of our #BEHINDTHEOPEN series. Every streak comes to an end – after seven games for SVE

After many weeks without any defeats, we had almost become used to it, but the floodlit game on Friday (3 November 2023) at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde saw a 0:2 home defeat for SV Elversberg against league leaders FC St. Pauli. This brings to an end a streak of seven unbeaten games, but there will be other opponents against whom Elversberg can put up more of a fight, as coach Horst Steffen made clear after the game (more details in our post-match report).

Saarlouis Royals return home without points

The Saarlouis Royals basketball team remain at the bottom of the league after their sixth game of the season. The battle between the bottom two 1. Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL) teams on Saturday (4 November 2023) saw Medical Instinct Veilchen BG 74 of Göttingen – who previously had failed to achieve any wins – emerge victorious against the Saarlouis Royals with a score of 85:77 (44:44), leaving them in last place. At the beginning of the game, the Royals were able to take the first quarter with a score of 21:17. However, Göttingen then gradually caught up to bring things to 44:44 by half time. In the third quarter, the hosts took the lead (67:58). Although Saarlouis were able to catch up somewhat in the final quarter, ultimately it was not enough to turn the game around and take the points home. After the international break, on 19 November the Royals are back for a home game against RUTRONIK STARS KELTERN at the Stadtgartenhalle in Saarlouis.

Mixed results for Gaga at the Players Championship

Wednesday and Thursday (1 & 2 November 2023) saw the last two Players Championship tournaments of the year. Saarland darts pro Gabriel Clemens reached the board final on both days of the tournament in Barnsley, UK.

The Saarwellingen native began the 29th event of this tournament series with two clear successes on the Wednesday. He started by leaving Arron Monk clearly in his wake 6:1, and then won four of his six showdowns in the fifth round. The ‘German Giant’ then stepped up another gear against Nathan Rafferty, and despite losing the opening leg, won six legs in a row and left Rafferty on the sidelines with a 104 average. However, Clemens was unable to repeat this performance against Josh Payne and lost 6:5 in the third round. With another board final loss in the thirtieth and final Players Championship tournament, this brings the ProTour year to an end for Gabriel Clemens, before heading into the major events that are the Players Championship Finals and the World Darts Championship in London. He initially put in a promising performance against Martin Lukeman, winning 6:2 with a 102 average. He performed similarly against German number one Wesley Plaisier, with a 6:4 win. The foundations were laid for this with a break in the first leg, which Clemens retained throughout the match. The Saarland player’s board final run came to an end on the second day in round 3, with 3:6 against Stephen Bunting.

German gymnastics team off to Switzerland

At the Memorial Arthur Gander in Switzerland (1 November 2023), former balance beam world champion Pauline Schäfer-Betz only narrowly missed out on the podium and secured fourth place. For the men, Nils Dunkel took sixth place amid a strong lineup at this international tournament. At this traditional tournament where gymnasts can choose three out of four apparatus, only the Brazilian Julia Soares, former European all-around champion Melanie de Jesus dos Santos of France, and World Championship uneven bars runner up Kaylia Nemour of Algeria managed to out-perform the Chemnitz athlete. Among the men, who competed in four apparatus each, Halle athlete Kaylia Nemour came sixth with 53.85 points, holding off opponents including European all-around champion Adem Asil of Turkey.

For Schäfer-Betz, her trip to this neighbouring country continued with the Swiss Cup in Zurich on Sunday (5 November 2023). For the pairs competition she joined forces with world parallel bars champion Lukas Dauser (TSV Unterhaching). At this popular pairs event, the two athletes from the German national team missed out on the semi finals and finished the Swiss tour in seventh place.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
