What’s new from the HYLO® Sport family

Once again, the last week has been brimming with activities and events for our #hyloathletes. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

STRONG PERFORMANCES AT HYLO® SPEERWURFMEETING

In summery weather in front of an impressive 1,200 spectators, the mood at the 8th HYLO® Speerwurfmeeting in Offenburg on Sunday (12 May 2024) was electrifying. Johannes Vetter, the 2017 world champion, had to delay his comeback slightly due to an adductor injury suffered during pre-match training, but he still made an appearance at his home meet in the ETSV Stadium as a commentator and presented the event and livestream alongside former world champion Christina Obergföll. Boris Obergföll, the meet organiser and national javelin coach, seemed happy with the athletes’ performances and the positive response from the audience, who came out in good numbers on Mother’s Day.

ARTUR FELFNER AND ADRIANA VILAGOS ON THE TOP OF THE PODIUM

There was just a centimetre between the women’s gold and silver medals. The winner was Adriana Vilagos of Serbia (just twenty years old) with 63.58 metres, slightly ahead of Joe-Ane Van Dyk of South Africa. Christin Hussong of LAZ Zweibrücken came seventh with a throw of 59.63 metres. This means that the former European champion has now hit the entry standard for the European Championships in Rome, and appeared happy with the result. For the men, Artur Felfner of Ukraine achieved the farthest throw with 83.95 metres, just 37 centimetres off his personal best. Max Dehning of Leverkusen, whose best throw so far this year has been 90.20 metres, had to make do with second place. Niklas Kaul, the former decathlon world champion, put in a strong performance amongst the javelin specialists with a throw of 75.42 metres, putting him on track for the European Championships in the decathlon in Rome.

SVE LOSE LAST AWAY GAME

The goal for the season has now been reached, and pressure to achieve results has been replaced with a fantastic mood. This is most likely why last Saturday (11 May 2024) at their final away game, SV Elversberg – the promoted heroes under coach Horst Steffen – seemed to have run out of steam somewhat against 1. FC Nürnberg in their first 2. Bundesliga season. The Saarland team had to return home from France devoid of points after a 0:3 loss. This defeat was not a painful one, given SVE’s current comfortable position in the table. Instead, the coach noted the team’s positive development and the performances they had achieved throughout the entire of the season. More details in our post-match report.

On Sunday (19 May), the team is planning to show off their best side once again for their final day of 2. Bundesliga play, at 3:30 p.m. in the URSAPHARM arena on Kaiserlinde against Karlsruher SC, to provide an intoxicating home show and celebrate a fantastic promoted season.

We have once again relaunched our betting game for this final home match: you can place bets up to two minutes before kick-off and win attractive prizes. The betting game can be found here.

BERLIN’S JUNGFÜCHSE IN THE GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

During the current international cap break, the international players of Füchse Berlin are off with their national teams. In the meantime, Füchse’s A and B juniors both managed to qualify for the German championship finals, where they will defend their titles.

The Füchse A junior team have reached the final against Rhein-Neckar Löwen. On Saturday (4 May) they beat HC Erlangen 35:32 in the semi-final second leg at their home MBS-Arena Potsdam. The Franconians won the first leg 37:34. A higher away goal total put the young Füchse team through to the final. Their final showdown against the Baden Löwen is their third final clash in a row – in 2022 the title went to Kronau/Östringen, whilst in 2023 it stayed in Berlin.

The B team matched their A colleagues: the young Füchse players had previously won their home first leg 35:30 against JANO Filder (Jugend-Akademie Neuhausen-Ostfildern) from Baden-Württemberg. The junior B team may have just lost 24:25 on Sunday (12 May) in an exciting game in Ostfildern with plenty of jostling for the lead, but they are still four goals ahead overall and thus go forward to the German championship finals. Their opponent in the final will be SC DHfK Leipzig. The first leg is on Friday 17 May at 7 p.m. in the Lilli-Henoch-Halle in Berlin.

GERMAN U20 VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

After 2018 and 2023, the proWIN Volleys TV Holz are once again hosting a women’s German championships: on Saturday and Sunday (11-12 May 2024), SPORTCAMPUS SAAR in Saarbrücken will be crowning the new German champions in the U20 age category. The top sixteen teams from the relevant regional associations across Germany will offer more than 1,000 spectators across the two days top-quality, exciting volleyball and a boisterous atmosphere in the Multifunktionshalle and across the four courts.

The organisers proWIN Volleys’s junior team, as outsiders, managed to finish in 14th place. The new German U20 champions were the volleyball players of Schweriner SC, who successfully beat Rote Raben Vilsbiburg e.V. 26:24 and 25:21 in the final on Sunday.

GERMANY’S FEMALE GYMNASTS SUCCESSFUL ONCE AGAIN!

World champion Darja Varfolomeev won the all-around competition at the World Challenge Cup in Portimão, Portugal (11-12 May 2024). In the finals on the Sunday, the 17-year-old from TSV Schmiden also won gold with the hoop, clubs and ribbon. The second German starter, Anastasia Simakova, came seventh in the all-around competition, finished in fourth with the ribbon, and secured eighth place with the ball.

A few other individual athletes from the HYLO® SPORTS FAMILY were successfully competing in their disciplines last weekend:

Swiss wrestler Michael Ledermannlaunched his Kranzfest season on Sunday with the Mittelländischen Schwingfest in Riggisberg. After two draws to start then four wins in a row, the Swiss athlete secured a victory wreath at the end of the day at this home festival, just ten minutes from his home.

At the ‘Sky is the Limit’ throwing meet on 11 May in Wiesbaden, 2016 Olympic discus bronze medallist Daniel Jasisnki finished second in a strong field with a throw of 64.46 metres in the individual discus discipline. He is continuing straight on to his next meet in Tenerife on Wednesday.

The captain of the 1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis team, Patrick Franziska, put in a historic performance at the ‘Saudi Smash Open’ (1-11 May 2024) in Jeddah, which has two million dollars of prize money up for grabs. He was finally defeated in the final on Sunday by Chinese world number one Wang Chuqin, after beating South Korean player Jang Woo-Jin in the semi-final. Earlier in the tournament, Franziska had already defeated his German colleague Dang Qiu of Borussia Düsseldorf and Chinese world champion Fan Zhendong.

Shortly before the start of their respective leagues, two teams from our HYLO® SPORTS FAMILY held a joint press conference last Wednesday (8 May 2024). The Saarland Hurricanes and HYLO® Team Saar‘s joint conference at Autohaus Deckert was an opportunity for the two teams to present their future goals and plans. From this season onwards, the Hurricanes will be playing their German Football League (GFL) home games in Völklingen. Things kick off for the CANES with two away games. The first game takes place in Berlin on Saturday (18 May).
For the triathletes of HYLO® Team Saar, the new Bundesliga season begins on 25 May with a sprint competition in Kraichgau. We will be reporting news from both teams before things get started.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
