What’s new from the HYLO® Sport family

Last week saw some exciting challenges and deciders once again for our #hyloathletes. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.
Füchse Berlin runners’ up and championship qualifiers
With a victory and a defeat, last week the handball players of Füchse Berlin rounded off a successful Bundesliga season.
On Thursday evening (30 May 2024), Füchse Berlin lost 29:30 (16:15) to Bergischer HC in front of 8,518 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Jaron Siewert’s team thus earned their first defeat of the season in front of a home crowd at their final home game of the LIQUI MOLY HBL. Berlin’s top scorers were Mathias Gidsel and Hans Lindberg, with eight goals each.
After the game, the fans offered up resounding applause at a huge, emotional farewell ceremony for Hans Lindberg, Marko Kopljar, Keno Jacobs and Viktor Kireev, who are leaving Füchse in the summer.
To finish off the season, on Sunday (2 June) the capital team won their final game of the LIQUI MOLY HBL – an away match against ThSV Eisenach in front of 3,150 spectators in a sold-out Werner-Aßmann-Halle – with a score of 31:27 (15:13). Jaron Siewert’s team are thus heading into the summer break with a positive attitude and the runners-up position, including qualification for the Champions League. The Berlin team’s top scorer was Hans Lindberg, with eight goals in his final game. Lindberg, the most successful scorer in the league’s history, scored his 500th league goal and is returning to his home country of Denmark with a total of 3,115 goals scored in the HBL. Stricken Mathias Gidsel could only support his team from the bench, so was out of the running for the top scorer crown.
After this final win, the Berlin team are heading into a well-earned summer break as runners-up after an exhausting, successful season. However, the Olympic Games in Paris still await this summer for some players.
First win of the season for the Saarland Hurricanes
After two unfortunate away defeats for the football players of Saarland Hurricanes to kick off the new 1. Bundesliga season, on Saturday (1 June 2024) the team celebrated their first home win. On the pitch in front of the athletics hall at Sportcampus Saar in Saarbrücken, the Canes won 44:32 (8:0/16:12/6:12/14:8) against the ifm Razorbacks Ravensburg to chalk up their first win of the season in the German Football League (GFL).
Previously injured quarterback Andrew Brito made a successful return and led the team to a magnificent victory. The Canes put in a strong performance in the first two quarters, and retained their dominance and lead through to the end despite a lull in the third quarter.
Building on this first win, the Saarland players are now looking forward to their first home game at their new home stadium in Völklingen on 15 June, against the Straubing Spiders. The away game planned for this Saturday against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns is likely to be cancelled due to heavy rain and storms in southern Germany.
Saarlouis Hornets successfully back on track
Despite the rain in Darmstadt, Saarlouis Hornets relaunched their winning streak and regained second place in the 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Süd-West table with two victories.
The Hornets faced the next-placed league team from Darmstadt on Saturday (1 June 2024) under difficult conditions. Unlike the previous weekend, the Hornets put in a solid performance. They took the lead early and were able to build it up further thanks to strong defensive work and impressive offensive play. The game had already reached 14:3 when it was paused for an hour due to rain. Despite the score, the Whippets tried (successfully) to get the pitch in a playable condition. With Yannik Petry on the mound, the Hornets were ultimately able to secure their comfortable lead with the mercy rule at the fifth innings and win the first game 14:3.
The second game of the day was significantly more evenly matched. It was neck and neck right through to the end, when the Hornets were leading the seventh inning 4:3. However, an outfield error gave Darmstadt a final opportunity to equalise, taking things into extra innings. After a bumpy start on the offensive side, it was ultimately Peter Mick’s hit that scored the deciding run. Jay Bueche, who spent the entire game on the mound, then sealed the deal on this baseball epic with a strikeout to secure a 5:4 win for the Hornets.
This was the perfect way for the Hornets to respond after their tiny setback against Stuttgart! This puts them three wins clear in second place in the league and keeps them within striking distance of Mainz. Their next opponent on Saturday (8 June) is the second-placed team in the other southwestern league, the Neuenburg Atomics.
Party mood at the HYLO® Saar Darts Gala 2024
The HYLO® Saar Darts Gala 2024 on Saturday (1 June 2024) was an unforgettable evening full of world-class darts and emotion. The Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken was filled with nearly 3,000 enthusiastic darts fans enjoying the opportunity to see top players like the ‘German Giant’ Gabriel Clemens, five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld and other darts stars live and up close. The atmosphere was intoxicating, with the audience singing along enthusiastically to the walk-on anthems in a high-spirited and celebratory setting. Gabriel Clemens, local hero, put in a strong performance and reached the final, which he just lost 4:3 after an exciting duel with Dimitri Van den Bergh. As well as the sporting event itself, there was also a range of entertainment on offer including a photo box campaign and a prize competition, making the evening an unforgettable experience for many of the spectators. More details in our post-match report.
Excitement is already building for the next HYLO® Saar Darts Gala.
Boccia duo successful in São Paulo
Saarland’s two national boccia players Anita Raguwaran and Boris Nicolai are currently in São Paulo, Brazil, where they will be competing in their first international tournament of the year at the World Boccia Cup 2024. These two national squad athletes have been in the Brazilian capital since last week, and have both already played their way into the semi-final of the individual competitions for their BC 4 class. Neither were able to get any further, meaning that they will be competing for the bronze medal on Wednesday.
Both are extremely satisfied with what they have achieved and happy to have gained valuable points for the world rankings. On Wednesday afternoon (São Paulo local time), the two Saarland players will also be competing in the pairs (mixed doubles).
Boris Nicolai has since also been officially selected for the Paralympics in Paris.
New partnership with Carrie Schreiner
We are delighted to announce a new partnership and collaboration with Saarland racing driver Carrie Schreiner. This 25-year-old racing driver from Völklingen began her motorsports career in 2011 with karting, and has since taken an impressive trajectory.
She drives in the F1 Academy for the Stake F1 Team. Campos Racing is her team as a racing driver. As part of the ‘Girls Only WS’ project, Carrie is one of just four drivers in a team made up solely of women.
At the weekend (31 May to 2 June 2024), Schreiner and her girls-only team finished in third place in their class at the legendary 24-hour race on the Nürburgring. The 52nd edition of this legendary race on the ‘Green Hell’ was aborted after a 14-hour interruption due to fog. This meant that despite a good strategy and prospects, the drivers could not work their way any further forward than third place after the race was called off. Carrie and her girls crew ultimately had to be satisfied with the final result to round off this year’s ‘Green Hell’.
Carrie Schreiner’s next challenge awaits on 21to 23 June with the third race of the F1 Academy series in Barcelona.
We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
