What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

Some of our #hyloathletes have been out and about once again over the past week. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

Hurricanes narrowly miss out on causing an upset

After a summer break of just under four weeks, last Saturday (20 July 2024) the Saarland Hurricanes were back with a vengeance at Völklingen’s Hermann Neuberger stadium. With three new signings and a few injured players returning, the Hurricanes put in an impressive performance against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in the first game of the second half of the erima German Football League (GFL) season. Sadly, this was not quite enough to secure their first home win in Völklingen.

The Hurricanes started the game in strong form and took an 8:0 lead thanks to a pass by new quarterback Connor Kaegi to Marian Menden. However, after a twenty-minute break due to weather, the Unicorns established a better foothold in the game and reclaimed the lead. Despite a subsequent equaliser by the pairing of Kaegi and Menden, the GFL Süd table leaders extended their lead and ultimately won the game 23:20. The CANES were unable to convert a forced fumble shortly before the end of the game into a winning drive, giving the match to the visiting team with a very close scoreline.

Even with this close defeat, the Saarland team put in a fighting performance and demonstrated that they are able to keep pace with the strong teams playing in the league. With their new additions and the return of injured players, the CANES still have all to play for this season. The aim for the next few weeks will now be to climb their way up the GFL Süd table and secure a place in the playoffs.

Next weekend sees a brief pause for breath, before the Hurricanes then welcome the Allgäu Comets to the Hermann Neuberger stadium on 3 August. Things are therefore remaining exciting for the Saarland Hurricanes.

HYLO® Team Saar back in the running for the championship

After sixth place at the season opener in Kraichgau, last Sunday (21 July 2024) HYLO® Team Saar put in a strong performance at the second Triathlon-Bundesliga race of the season in Tübingen. With the clear goal of achieving a top position and thus staying in the running for the championship title, team leader Marc Trautmann needed a strong team on the starting line.

The team, consisting of Gregor Payet, Johannes Vogel, David Lang and Dominic Coy, put in a strong performance at the 750-metre swim in the Neckar. Vogel made his way straight into the front cycling group, whilst Payet and Lang followed in the second group. Coy was rather unlucky and just missed joining them.

In the penultimate cycling section, Vogel went on the attack and was able to establish a twenty-second lead when it was time to switch to running shoes. HYLO® Team Saar then put in a perfect team performance in the run. With Vogel in fifth, Lang in seventh and Payet in ninth, three athletes secured top-ten finishes, giving HYLO® Team Saar the stage victory.

This result means that the Saarland team was able to start catching up with the top of the table in the Triathlon-Bundesliga overall rankings. After the second race, the table leader is Sportunion Neckarsulm with 38 points, ahead of Triathlon Team DSW Darmstadt with 36 points and the teams from Saarbrücken, Trier and Süßen, who each have 35 points.

The next 1. Bitburger 0.0% Triathlon-Bundesliga competition is on 10 August in Dresden. HYLO® Team Saar are now back in the race for the title.

Saarlouis Hornets suffer two close defeats in top game

On Sunday (21 July 2024) in summery conditions, the Saarlouis Hornets suffered two very close defeats to Mainz Athletics 2 in two exciting top games as part of the 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Süd-West 1. The double-header in the Saarlouis ballpark resulted in a score of 4:5 for the first game and 6:9 for the second.

After a rough start to the first game and some defensive errors that gave Mainz an early 3:0 lead, the Hornets fought their way back into the match. Thanks to solid defensive and offensive performances by pitchers Peter Mick and Yannik Petry, the Hornets were on the cusp of turning the game around at 4:5. However, despite a good starting point, they failed to achieve the crucial deciding run.

The second game was evenly matched, with Jay Bueche and Ivan Razvan on the mound for the Hornets. After seven innings, the score stood at 6:6, so the game went into extra innings where Mainz were fortunate enough to score two runs. A serious collision between Florian Maaß and Tobias Rettel when trying to catch a high ball from the Mainz team resulted in their being substituted and another run for the table leaders. The Hornets were unable to counter this run and ultimately suffered a 6:9 defeat.

The Saarlouis team have now secured second place in the final table and will enter the playoffs from there. However, Tobi Rettel suffered a particularly serious injury in the form of a torn muscle, as did Flo Maaß, who injured his medial collateral ligament. Both will be sitting out the Hornets’s games in the next few weeks. We would like to wish both a speedy recovery and hope that they will be back in action for the playoffs!

The next and final game in the main round is on Saturday (27 July) against Darmstadt in the Saarlouis ballpark.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
