What’s new from the HYLO® Sport family

Another week full of highlights and challenges for our #hyloathletes is behind us. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

HYLO® athletes at the Summer Olympics in Paris

Sunday (11 August 2024) was an unforgettable experience full of impressive moments and outstanding performances for HYLO®’s athletes to mark the end of the Paris Olympics.

Golden end to the Olympics for the German gymnastics team

Darja Varfolomeev ensured a historic moment by winning Germany’s first ever gold medal in rhythmic gymnastics in the history of the Olympics. The 17-year-old six-time world champion and two-time European champion achieved a long-held dream with her win on Friday (9 August 2024). Her teammate Margarita Kolosov just missed out on a bronze medal to finish fourth, rounding off the German gymnastics team’s exceptional performance.

The German rhythmic gymnastics team missed out on the all-around final (9 August 2024). Despite a strong first routine, errors in the second resulted in points being docked, ultimately keeping them out of the final. Nevertheless, the gymnasts can be proud to be one of the fourteen best teams in the world.

You can find other exciting insights and emotional moments from Paris at ALL EYES ON PARIS.

Anita Raguwaran and Boris Nicolai will be lining up for Germany to compete in Boccia at the Paralympics in Paris at the end of August. Make sure not to miss a single moment.

As well as the Paris Olympics, there have also been some other sporting highlights for the HYLO® Sport family.

Fourth win in a row for Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol

Saarland’s rally driver Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol and his co-driver Henry Wichura won their NC4 class in the penultimate Deutsche Rallye Meisterschaft race at the ADAC Rallye Stemweder Berg last weekend (9-10 August 2024).

Despite strong competition and difficult conditions on the route, especially the ‘Eggetal’ special stage, they were able to clinch a magnificent victory in a thriller that went down to the wire in the Wiehen Hills in Teutoburg Forest. They ultimately secured the win in their class with a lead of 15 seconds.

This fourth win in a row has allowed Tarek to further increase his points tally for the DRM Nationals. However, the currently leading Macht/Teufel team were also able to win in their class, meaning they remain 15 points ahead of the second-placed defending champions from Saarland in the DRM Nationals. The champion will ultimately be decided at the final race on 6 and 7 September at the ADAC Ostsee Rallye in Lensahn. We are crossing our fingers for Tarek.

SVE gain points in first home game against relegated team Köln

At a sold-out URSAPHARM arena last Saturday (10 August 2024), SV Elversberg made their home debut of the new 2. Fußball-Bundesliga season against relegated first-division team 1. FC Köln, which ended in a fair 2:2 draw.

The Köln eleven established a lead in the first half, but SVE turned the game around in the second half to pull ahead 2:1, until their opponents equalised in the 86th minute. The two new additions Fisnik Asllani and Freddy Schmahl came on the pitch after half-time and both scored goals for coach Horst Steffen’s team. Asllani said after the game that the goal came at a good time and that the team established a better foothold in the game in the second half, but were ultimately lacking the composure they needed to secure the win.

As well as the successful substitutions, goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof once again shone, making numerous brilliant saves to secure Elversberg a point. Read more in our post-match report

SV Elversberg now have two points to their name and will not be pursuing more until 23 August when they play Karlsruher SC, as the league is taking a break. Before then, they face VfV 06 Hildesheim for a DFB cup match on 18 August.

Second place in Dresden for HYLO® Team Saar

HYLO® Team Saar managed second place at the first 1. Bitburger 0.0% Triathlon-Bundesliga race in Dresden on Saturday (11 August 2024). The competition was in Dresden’s historic old town and covered the sprint distance: 750-metre swim, 20.5-kilometre cycle and 5-kilometre run.

The Saarland team lined up on the starting line for the competition along the Elbe and through Dresden’s old town with athletes Chris Ziehmer, Justus Nieschlag, Jaspar Ortfeld, Emil Holm (DEN) and Harry Leleu (GBR).

Holm led the team in the running section and finished in fourth place, followed by Nieschlag in sixth and Ziehmer in tenth. Leleu and Ortfeld came in 39th and 42nd. An overall place score of 59 secured the team second place in the daily rankings.

We can now expect maximum excitement at the final Bundesliga competition in Hanover (7-8 September). In the overall team table, the team from Süßen is just one point ahead of their Darmstadt opponents, who are level pegging with HYLO® Team Saar.

Away win in Kirchdorf for Saarland Hurricanes

The Saarland Hurricanes have finally done it with their second win of the season! At an erima German Football League (GFL) away game on Saturday (11 August 2024), Saarland’s American footballers were able to celebrate a crucial success in Bavaria against the Kirchdorf Wildcats.

The Hurricanes won 24:21 (0:8/7:0/7:8/7:8) in a duel at the bottom of the GFL Süd group, thus keeping their slim playoff hopes alive.

The CANES will absolutely have to gain further wins in their remaining three games, and any potential playoff place is also dependent on how their competitors fare in their own matches.

With two wins and four points on their ledger, the Hurricanes are currently in sixth place, or one from the bottom of their group. There are three teams sitting two wins ahead of them, and all are still to play the Saarland squad. The first four teams in each group qualify for the playoffs.

On Saturday (17 August) at 4 p.m., the Hurricanes face the Munich Cowboys at the Hermann Neuberger stadium in Völklingen. A real ‘do or die’ game for the Hurricanes! Only a win will keep their playoff chances alive. We are crossing our fingers!

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
