What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

Our #hyloathletes have been giving their all and putting in strong performances once again this week. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.
HYLO® Team Saar return from Hanover with three titles
The final of the 1. Bitburger 0.0% Triathlon-Bundesliga took place around Masch Lake in Hanover at the weekend (7 and 8 September 2024). As well as winning the day event, HYLO® Team Saar also managed to clinch the championship title for the second time since 2021 and Justus Nieschlag secured the individual title. The Saarland athletes also reached the top of the podium for the mixed team relay, as a joint team with TSV Amicitia Viernheim for the first time.
Tim Hellwig played a crucial role in the team’s success: the gold medal winner from Paris came fifth in the individual race and contributed significantly to the relay win.

Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol runner-up at the DRM Nationals
Last weekend (6-7 September 2024) saw the Ostsee-Rallye, the final race of the Deutsche Rallye Meisterschaft (DRM). Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol from Saarbrücken and his co-driver Henry Wichura from Berlin competed in the Citroën C2 Challenge and gained first place in their NC4 class. Despite this success and the most wins in any class (five in six races), he just missed out on claiming the DRM Nationals German championship title.
He came second in the championship with a total of 159 points, just behind the Macht/Teufel team, who clinched the win with 168 points. Tarek reflected after the race: ‘Looking back, we lost the championship at the first event in the Ore Mountains. A mistake with our choice of tyres cost us a lot of points. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic year and we are proud of our performance.’
As are we! A strong season performance by Tarek Hamadeh-Spaniol.

Michael Ledermann impresses at the Jubiläumsschwingfest in Appenzell
Sunday (8 September 2024) saw the Eidgenössische Schwingerverband (ESV)’s Jubiläumsschwingfest in Appenzell (CH), celebrating the ESV’s 125th anniversary. 122 Swiss wrestlers qualified for this prestigious event, facing off in the sawdust ring in front of nearly twenty thousand spectators.
Despite difficult preparations and only recovering just in time from a ligament injury in his foot, 23-year-old Swiss wrestler Michael Ledermann finished this highlight of the 2024 season with a solid rank of 7b.
With three wins, two losses and a draw, the Swiss wrestler from Schwingclub Schwarzenburg gained a total of 55.75 points.
Given the difficult circumstances and his impressive return to the competition stage, this was a respectable performance by our HYLO® athlete and a positive end to the season.
Historic moments for Gabriel Clemens at the Flanders Darts Trophy
The Flanders Darts Trophy took place in Antwerp from 6 to 8 September 2024 as part of the PDC European Tour. This featured the world’s top darts players, including Saarland pro Gabriel Clemens, ensuring a few unforgettable moments.
Day 1: a narrow victory in the decider
On the first day, Gabriel Clemens faced Martin Lukeman. In an exciting match where Gaga missed a few match darts, Clemens was able to narrowly secure the win in the decider with an impressive 107 finish. This set the Saarland player up for a tough faceoff in the last sixteen.
Day 2: historic win against Michael van Gerwen
Saturday was the highlight for Gabriel Clemens and his fans. In an exciting match, Clemens defeated top Dutch player Michael van Gerwen 6:4. This was Clemens’s first ever win over van Gerwen and one of the best games of his career. Clemens played a strong 107 average and threw eight 180s. A particularly impressive feature was his virtually perfect game, where he threw eight perfect darts and only just missed out on a nine-darter. His 104 finish for the win rounded things out with another highlight. Clemens was delighted after the match: ‘It feels incredible to have finally beaten Michael.’
Day 3: out in the last sixteen
On Sunday, the final day of the tournament, the German Giant faced Dave Chisnall in the last sixteen. Despite a solid performance, Clemens was not able to build on his previous success and lost 2:6. Chisnall performed consistently and made efficient use of opportunities, whilst Clemens missed out on a vital double. This ended Clemens’s run in the Flanders Darts Trophy, but his impressive performances – and in particular his defeat of van Gerwen – will not soon be forgotten.
Team Bike AID at the Tour of Poyang Lake 2024 – progress report
The Tour of Poyang Lake takes place in China from 2 to 12 September 2024, a crucial stage race in UCA category 2.2. Team Bike AID have a strong team at the event: Dawit Yemane, Léo Bouvier, Anton Lennemann, Pirmin Eisenbarth, Yoel Habteab and Lennard Sternsdorff performed impressively well right from the start.
The Tour began with a team time trial in Jingdezhen Leping. The team from Saarland put in a solid performance, laying the foundations for the upcoming stages.
On the third day of the Tour, Yoel Habteab clinched the climbing jersey after a day in the breakaway group. He won all four mountain classifications and two intermediate sprints in the third stage, leading the mountain rankings from this point on. In the final sprint, Léo Bouvier and another team rider finished in eighth and tenth place. The team has improved their position in the overall rankings every single day, and thus far remain unblighted by falls or major technical issues.
Mid-tour review
After seven stages, Team Bike AID have successfully conquered more than half of the Tour. Yoel Habteab managed to defend the climbing jersey, whilst Dawit Yemane worked his way up to second place in the mountain classification. Yemane was also in the top five for the overall rankings and was the best climber in the seventh stage. Léo Bouvier came fifth in the sixth stage and Lennard Sternsdorff finished third in the junior rankings.
Team Bike AID will be tackling the remaining stages with maximum motivation and are looking forward to their upcoming challenges.
FCS Tischtennis narrowly defeated by Werder Bremen
On 3 September 2024, 1. FC Saarbrücken TT welcomed SV Werder Bremen to the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle for the second home game of the brand new Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL) season. Despite a strong pursuit, the team from Saarbrücken had to accept a narrow 2:3 defeat.
The match began with two defeats for the Saarland players: captain Patrick Franziska lost to Marcelo Aguirre 2:3 and Wang Lichen was beaten by 1:3 Kirill Gerassimenko. However, Darko Jorgic got the team back in play with a 3:1 win against Mattias Falck. Franziska then equalised with a magnificent score of 3:0 against Gerassimenko.
However, Bremen were able to triumph in the doubles decider: Falck and Aguirre beat Wang and Jorgic 3:1 to secure the win for Werder Bremen. Sadly, their dogged pursuit was unsuccessful.
Despite the defeat, the team remain motivated and are looking to the future. 18 September sees a last-sixteen cup match against the promoted team from Dortmund, and the Saarbrücken team will be hoping for the support of their fans and their first home win of the new season.
A weekend full of emotions for Team75 Motorsport
At the weekend (7 and 8 September 2024), the Sachsenring was the venue for another exciting race as part of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany. Team75 Motorsport lined up at the start with drivers Janne Stiak and Robert de Haan for a weekend full of highs and lows.
Saturday: disappointment after disqualification
On Saturday, Janne Stiak seemed to have secured his second podium finish of the season with third place in the race. However, during the technical checks after the race, his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup was found to be very slightly too light, resulting in disqualification. His teammate Robert de Haan also had a difficult day and finished in fifteenth, giving him just one point.
Sunday: triumph and pursuit
Sunday marked a turning point for Timo Bernhard’s team. Janne Stiak started in pole position and enjoyed a safe lead from start to finish, his first triumph in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Germany. Robert de Haan managed an impressive pursuit and fought his way up from starting at the back to eighth place. This gained him valuable championship points and helped him extend his lead in the rookie rankings.
Team boss Jennifer Leising: ‘After things did not go entirely to plan for us on Saturday, this Sunday has been a real balm for the soul. The entire team worked very well and both drivers had an excellent race.’
Team75 Motorsport are looking back at a weekend full of challenges and successes, and forward to their upcoming races. Their next stop: 27 to 29 September at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.
A successful start to the season for Füchse Berlin
On Saturday evening (3 September 2024), Füchse Berlin began the new DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) season with an away win against ThSV Eisenach. In the sold-out Werner-Aßmann-Halle, the Berlin team triumphed 41:35 (19:17) to secure their first two points of the season.
The handball players from Berlin put in a strong performance right from the start. Particularly worthy of mention are Mathias Gidsel and Tim Freihöfer, who scored twelve goals each. Freihöfer safely converted all six penalties.
The game began with a few misthrows on both sides, but Serbian goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev soon showed his skill and played a major role in the team’s success with six saves. In the second half, Lasse Ludwig took over the goal and similarly impressed with seven saves. Füchse put in a disciplined defensive performance and various different configurations functioned well in the central block.
Despite their gaining a five-goal lead, the visitors from Eisenach remained resolute and reduced this to three. However, Füchse were able to increase this again near the end of the match, breaching the 40-goal mark.
Coach Jaron Siewert seemed relieved after the game: ‘We are of course relieved to have made it through. We knew that it would not be an easy ride. I am satisfied with our offensive play, even though we could have scored four or five goals more. In the second half, we boosted our defence, played actively, and made saves. We also pushed the pace forward.’
With this win and their Super Cup success, Füchse Berlin have enjoyed a successful start to the new season and are optimistic about their upcoming games.
Things continue on Thursday evening with the start of the Champions League group stage: the handball players of Veszprem KC are coming to Berlin.
Hurricanes defeated in season finale
On Saturday (7 September 2024), the Saarland Hurricanes faced the Straubing Spiders for their final match of the erima German Football League (GFL) season. The game ended with a 24:38 defeat for the Hurricanes.
The match began with a quick touchdown for the Spiders, but the Hurricanes promptly responded thanks to Connor Kaegi, who scored the first points for his team following a strong run by Spencer Corona. Despite further efforts and another touchdown by Kaegi in the second quarter, the Hurricanes were not able to catch up the lead established by the Spiders.
Misfortune set in for the Hurricanes in the second half. An interception meant more points for the Spiders, and the Hurricanes’s defence had trouble stopping their opponents’ attacks. Nevertheless, Kaegi managed to score another touchdown, and Spencer Corona also rejoined the scorer list.
But in the end, this was not enough to prevent defeat. This win secured the Straubing Spiders a place in the playoffs, whilst the 2024 season was brought to an end with a defeat for the Saarland Hurricanes. They will now begin preparations for the next season, during which the team will doubtless build on the experience gained this year.
SV Elversberg win test match against SV Wehen Wiesbaden
On Friday (6 September 2024), SV Elversberg played SV Wehen Wiesbaden in a test match during the international cap break. This game against the third division team took place at midday in the Halberg stadium, with a 5:1 win for SVE.
Elversberg dominated play in the first half. Lukas Petkov (13th minute) and Filimon Gerezgiher (15th minute) scored the first two goals in the first quarter of an hour. Muhammed Damar increased the score to 3:0 by converting a free kick in the 23rd minute, and added another goal shortly before half time to bring things to 4:0 (39th minute).
The game became more evenly matched after the change of ends, but Elversberg were able to largely prevent their opponents from taking any dangerous shots. In the 79th minute, Wehen Wiesbaden clawed the score back to 1:4 with a goal by Moritz Flotho. Five minutes later, Wiesbaden goalkeeper Noah Brdar had a mishap when a back pass rolled into his own goal to put the final score at 5:1.
This test match offered preparation for the team’s upcoming tasks in the 2. Bundesliga, especially their next away game against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on 15 September. Despite lacking a few players away with their national teams, the team put in a strong performance and are optimistic about their upcoming encounters.
We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
