What’s new from the HYLO® Sports family

The past week has once again been full of challenges for our #hyloathletes. We take a look back at the last seven days’ events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs.

First home defeat of the season for SVE

On Sunday (22 September 2024), SV Elversberg had to accept a disappointing 3:1 defeat against SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball. Despite a committed performance in front of 8,451 spectators at the URSAPHARM arena on Kaiserlinde, coach Horst Steffen’s team were unable to make the most of their opportunities and suffered their first home defeat of the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga season. The visiting team from Ulm scored each of their goals after standard situations, whilst SVE let countless opportunities pass them by.

Coach Horst Steffen seemed disappointed after the game: ‘Today was quite simply not good enough. Of course, we could have converted our goal opportunities, but our rest defence and our build-up were quite simply weak.’

After six days of play, the Saarland team are twelfth in the table with six points. Further details and a breakdown of the match can be found in our post-match report.

Next week, SVE have their most distant away game of the season: they are facing Hertha BSC Berlin in the Olympiastadion on Sunday 29 September.

Two wins for 1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis in exciting matches

1. FC Saarbrücken TT had a successful week with two narrow wins. On Wednesday 18 September, the team secured their first home victory of the season in a cup match against Borussia Dortmund at the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle in Saarbrücken. Saarbrücken prevailed 3:2 in a nerve-racking match. Darko Jorgic led the team with two singles wins, whilst the deciding doubles match was won by Patrick Franziska and Cedric Meissner. After four hours, FCS TT finally converted a match point and thus secured a ticket to the cup quarter-finals.

On Sunday (22 September 2024), the Saarbrücken team also managed another narrow 3:2 win in a Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL) match against ASC Grünwettersbach. Once again, the match went the full distance – and similarly lasted nearly three and a half hours! Despite initially gaining a 2:0 lead, Saarland’s players under coach Wang Zhi once again ended up in an exciting doubles decider.

After a strong performance by Patrick Franziska and Yuto Muramatsu, who both won their singles matches, the doubles duo of Franziska/Meissner once again gained the deciding point in the final doubles match to put things at 3:2 to Saarbrücken, their second Bundesliga win of the season.

1. FCS Tischtennis’s next match is on 11 October with a firecracker of a clash against long-term rivals Borussia Düsseldorf, in the home setting of the Deckarm-Halle.

Füchse Berlin triumph in Bitola, founder in Hanover

Füchse Berlin had an eventful week with mixed results. On Wednesday (18 September 2024), Füchsecelebrated their first home win in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League. In a magnificent away game, they triumphed 30:22 over RK Pelister in North Macedonia. Mathias Gidsel and Lasse Andersson led the team with six goals each. Berlin put in an impressive performance in both offence and defence, thus securing their first international points in the Champions League.

However, on Sunday (22 September 2024) the handball team from Berlin had to accept their first defeat of the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga season. They lost 35:38 to TSV Hannover-Burgdorf in front of 8,709 spectators in the ZAG Arena. Despite a strong performance by Lasse Andersson, Mathias Gidsel and Tim Freihöfer, who scored nine goals each, the Berlin team were unable to avoid defeat. There were weaknesses in Füchse‘s defence, and technical errors in their attack prevented them from catching up.

Coach Jaron Siewert emphasised the importance of the Champions League win for the team’s self-confidence, and was positive about their upcoming games despite the defeat in Hanover.

Füchse continue their Machineseeker EHF Champions League campaign in Denmark on Thursday, when they will face Fredericia Handbold Klub. After that, on Sunday, HC Erlangen will be coming to Berlin for the fourth day of play in the Handball-Bundesliga.

proWIN Volleys lose first match of the season

On Saturday (21 September 2024), the TV Holz proWIN Volleys began the new 2. Damen Volleyball-Bundesliga Süd season with a 0:3 home defeat (17:25 19:25 23:25) against TG Bad Soden. Despite a decimated squad and the loss of regular setter Mikaela Stevens, who suffered a bruised knee in a test match against SSC Freisen, coach Sergej Danilov’s team fought bravely. Cara Deppner, who was added as setter last-minute, gained the accolade of MVP for her performance in the game.

The away team from Bad Soden proved to be experienced and strong, making it difficult for the Volleys to gain a foothold in the match. Despite ramping things up from set to set, the Holz volleyball players were unable to win a set or a point.

Coach Sergej Danilov is now meticulously preparing the team for their next away game in Unterhaching on 5 October, when the squad should be full stocked once again.

BC Bischmisheim celebrate successful double-header to start the season

BC Bischmisheim had a successful start to the 1. Badminton-Bundesliga season with a double-header. On Saturday 21 September, the team from Saarland secured a convincing 5:2 home win against SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen. The Bischmisheim players put in a strong performance and were able to hold their own in the crucial games.

This was followed on Sunday 22 September by another vital win, this time against promoted team 1. BV Mülheim. With a clear 7:0 victory, BCB demonstrated their dominance and did not leave the visiting team any opportunities. A particularly noteworthy element was the performance by Isabel Lohau, who was enjoying one more successful match in front of a home crowd before heading off on maternity leave.

Things continue for BCB with two away matches (against Blau-Weiss Wittorf-NMS and SG Schorndorf), plus hosting the HYLO® Open 2024 from 29 October to 3 November 2024 in the Saarbrücker Saarlandhalle, before their next Bundesliga home game on 9 November at 5 p.m., when record champions Bischmisheim will be welcoming reigning German champions Dortelweil to the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle in Saarbrücken.

Strong tournament week for Gabriel Clemens in Wigan and Budapest

Gabriel Clemens, the ‘German giant’, had a packed week of tournaments with the Players Championship Events no. 20 & 21 in Wigan (GB) and the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest. On 17 and 18 September 2024, Clemens reached the board final twice at the Players Championship tournaments in Wigan, before then competing at the Hungarian Darts Trophy from 20 to 22 September.

Clemens put in a pleasing performance at the Players Championship Events. On Tuesday (17 September), he defeated George Killington 6:4 and Darren Beveridge 6:1, before losing 3:6 to Damon Heta. On Wednesday (18 September), Clemens beat John Henderson 6:2 and Rhys Griffin 6:5 before being defeated by Ian White 1:6.

Clemens started strong at the Hungarian Darts Trophy (20-22 September 2024) in Budapest by beating Dirk van Duijvenbode 6:1 on Friday. He continued this impressive performance and defeated reigning world champion Luke Humphries 6:4 on Saturday, before ultimately losing 3:6 to Michael van Gerwen in the last sixteen. Despite this defeat, Clemens put in an exceptional performance and once again showed his emerging form and positive development.

Gaga once again has a packed itinerary for this week: on Tuesday and Wednesday, the darts pro from Saarland will be competing at Players Championship 22 & 23 in Leicester (GB). This is followed at the weekend by the Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel, the next tournament on the PDC European Tour.

A few other individual athletes from the HYLO® Sports family were successfully competing in their disciplines last weekend:

Olympic relay champion Tim Hellwig finished in fourth place in his first middle-distance race. After a 1.9-kilometre swim, 90-kilometre cycle and 21.1-kilometre run, he crossed the finish line at the Ironman 70.3 Italy on Sunday (22 September 2024) after 3:44:20 hours, putting him in fourth place and four minutes behind the winner.

Carrie Schreiner had a successful weekend at the F1 Academy race in Singapore. On Saturday (21 September 2024), the Saarland racing driver finished in eighth place in her first race. Despite strong competition, she was able to hold her own and gain vital points.

On Sunday (22 September), Carrie continued her good form to finish ninth in the second race. These results have secured her ninth place in the F1 Academy overall rankings, and she seemed satisfied with her performance.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
