What’s new from the HYLO® Sport family

Our #hyloathletes have been very active once again in recent days. We take a look back at the events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs over the past week.

SV Elversberg makes history once again

With a historic win in the Arena auf Schalke, last Friday evening (10 November 2023) SV Elversberg set another milestone in their club’s history. The well-earned 2:1 victory over Schalke 04 for the team under coach Horst Steffen was not just a win in the largest setting in the club’s history – it also adds another three points to their ledger, putting them in ninth place and just three points behind the second placed team in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga (more details in our post-match report).

Füchse Berlin are world championship runners up

At 32:34 after extra time (16:13; 29:29), Füchse Berlin were defeated by SC Magdeburg in the Super Globe final on Sunday (12 November 223). Although the Berlin team failed to achieve their happy ending in their fifth club world championship final, coach Jaron Siewert was pleased with and proud of the team’s performance and morale despite their first defeat of the season.

The previous day, the capital team performed magnificently in a dramatic semi-final against multiple Champions League winners FC Barcelona, prevailing in an almighty battle down to the final second with a score of 35:34 in extra time. Berlin’s young goalkeeper and U21 world champion Lasse Ludwig shone in goal during the final phase of the match, especially when he saved an extremely controversial penalty throw by the Spaniards in the final seconds of normal time, taking Berlin into extra time.

After an exhausting semi-final, history then repeated itself apart from just one small detail. The German-only final of the club world championships in Saudia Arabia, against long-term rivals and current Champions League winners from Magdeburg, remained close right down to the final second. After four games in five days, ‘towards the end we just didn’t have the energy left’, as manager Bob Hanning described events following their final defeat. Without the core injured players Paul Drux, Fabian Wiede and Max Darj, the Berlin team quite simply ran out of steam during the final phase. Ultimately, Füchse were named the world championship runners up after extra time. Berlin’s best scorer in the final was Mathias Gidsel with nine goals, whilst Dejan Milosavljev was able to save 22 throws.

On Tuesday, Füchse are back on their home turf of the Max-Schmeling-Halle to face Dinamo Bukarest (8:45 p.m.) in the European League, before heading to THW Kiel for a Handball-Bundesliga match on Sunday (2:05 p.m.).

TG Saar secures place in DTL final with phenomenal home win

TG Saar achieved a conclusive 86:0 win against TSV Pfuhl in their last home game of the Deutsche Turnliga (DTL) season on Saturday evening (11 November 2023). The visitors were saddled with a depleted bench and had no chance against the strong Saarland team. TG Saar’s young gymnasts in particular took on increasing amounts of responsibility. Daniel Mousichidis was the top scorer of the meet with 15 points, followed by Matteo Levantesi with 12 points and Oleg Verniaiev with 11 points, the two foreigners on the Saarland squad. Young Maxim Kovalenko also contributed to the team’s success with 11 scorer points.

This win means that the team under head coach Eugen Spiridonov has secured fourth place in the table, and thus entry to the league finals on 2 December in Neu-Ulm. The last competition of the season takes place this week on 18 November, with the Saarland team away against StTV Singen. The results of this duel and the outcome of the remaining matches on this competition day will decide whether TG Saar will feature in the grand final for the gold medal in the German Championships team tournament, or in the smaller final for the bronze medal.

Victory and defeat for BC Bischmisheim in double header

The BC Bischmisheim team has returned to Saarland from their two 1. Badminton-Bundesliga away games with mixed feelings. Following the successful hosting of the HYLO® OPEN 2023 in Saarbrücken, last weekend the club was back focusing its full attentions on the Bundesliga. For some of the BCB‘s top players, however, the home tournament was followed by an Asian tour with some key international appearances, in the battle for points in the qualification rankings for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The team under manager Peter Käsbauer was therefore somewhat depleted for its two away games on Saturday and Sunday (11 and 12 November 2023).

The double header for the Saarland team began on the Saturday with a top game against championship runners up 1. BC Wipperfeld. At this year’s German Championships final-four final in Saarbrücken at the end of April, they got the better of their top opponents from North Rhine-Westphalia. Despite a very close match over five sets, the BCB team ultimately had to admit defeat 5:2.

The second part of their away trip proved more successful. The second game of the weekend double was against SC Union 08 Lüdinghausen on the Sunday. With the same 5:2 score as the previous day, this time BC Bischmisheim were the winners and could return home in good spirits.

Whilst some of the team continues to play at Grand Prix tournaments in Asia and compete for individual results that are vital for the Olympics, the BCB is back in the Bundesliga with their next double header of two home games on 15 and 16 December.

proWIN Volleys return after away defeat

After a weekend of no play, on Sunday (12 November 2023) the TV Holz proWIN Volleys faced VC Wiesbaden II in the 2. Damen-Volleyball-Bundesliga Süd. As the fourth-placed team in the league, they represented a difficult task for the Saarland team.

The Holz players just could not gain a foothold against the squad from Hesse. The team under head coach Fabian Mohr struggled hugely with receiving and were only able to partially implement their attack, meaning that they were ultimately beaten 1:3. This was combined with the fact that the Saarland team had to manage without various players who were off sick and will hopefully return this week. The MVP for the proWINs’ match against Wiesbaden was Mylana Byrd.

This Sunday (19 November) sees the TV Holz volleyball team’s next away game, against the women of TG Bad Soden. We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
