Justus Nieschlag

Triathlon is a wonderful combination of three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. There is something for everyone in this discipline, as it ranges from short distances for children through to very long distances for athletes who want to push their limits – the full gamut!

I first discovered triathlon at the age of ten, alongside gymnastics, swimming and track and field athletics. I was fascinated and captivated by this sport right from the outset, and remain so today. I started with school competitions and then climbed my way up to becoming a world-class athlete. I have now moved from the sprint and short distance disciplines to middle distance. But I am not planning to stop there! I would like to step up to long distance in the next few years.

Justus Nieschlag FAQs

His swimming coach at the time took him along to triathlon, which immediately kindled a flame. However, his route to becoming a professional athlete was a very gradual one. Justus completed his school leaving examination at a standard school without any extensions or classes tailored to his sport. After this, he decided to move to the Olympic Training Centre in Saarland, which marked the beginning of his professional career.

On a competition day, Justus Nieschlag starts with a fifteen-minute jog before breakfast. His specific preparations and warm-up vary from race to race.

Justus Nieschlag owes his success in particular to his stamina, determination and flexibility. These attributes and skills are key to his success.

Mental strength is essential in elite sport, as it is often tiny details that make the difference with what are sometimes very small gaps. Justus works with a sport psychologist to help him remain error-free under pressure and push himself all the way to the limit.

Justus Nieschlag’s sporting focus for this year is the T100 series. For the long term, Justus Nieschlag is planning to switch to long distance.

Justus Nieschlag completes 15 to 18 training sessions per week, which amounts to 20 to 30 hours depending on the point in the season. He trains every day, even public holidays, his birthday and New Year’s Day.

Justus Nieschlag tries not to think anything in the final seconds before the start, and instead to just feel the adrenalin coursing through his body.

True to his motto ‘onwards with a smile’, Justus never loses sight of his main goal. At difficult times, he sets smaller interim goals that help him to stay motivated.

In his free time, after training or competitions, Justus Nieschlag likes to relax with books, films, TV series or nature walks.
