On Sunday (06.06.2021), the HYLO® Team Saar started the new season of the 1st Bitburger 0.0% National Triathlon League with maximum success in Berlin. The German Champions (Elite/U23) over the sprint distance were also determined at this season opener, which was embedded in the framework of The Finals 2021.The HYLO® Team Saar started with Jonas Breinlinger, Tim Hellwig, Lasse Nygaard-Prieser, Jannik Schaufler and Valentin Wernz. In addition, Marc Trautmann and Paul Weindl started in the extended field of German Championship contenders.
The 750m swim was held at Wannsee Lake. Tim Hellwig already put the pressure on in the opening discipline and left the water with a few seconds’ lead. After the transition, the race continued over a distance of about 15km in the direction of the Olympic Park, where there were two final laps to be completed for a total of 5km. First, a four-man bike group formed, in which Tim Hellwig and Jonas Breinlinger pushed the pace. But on the way to Berlin the first chasing group was able to catch up and so a leading group of about 15 men was formed, which endured until the second transition in the Hanns-Braun Stadium. From this group Tim Hellwig, Jonas Breinlinger and Valentin Wernz started on the run course – followed a few seconds later by Lasse Nygaard-Priester and Jannik Schaufler, who arrived at the transition in the second bike group.

On the second 2.5 km lap of the run course Tim Hellwig continued his committed race strategy, pushing the pace, and was able to decisively pull away from Justus Nieschlag and Henry Graf. With his commanding victory he secured the title of German Champion Elite as well as in the U23 ranking. Lasse Nygaard-Priester followed in 4th place, ahead of Jannik Schaufler in 5th and Jonas Breinlinger in 7th. Valentin Wernz crossed the finish line shortly behind in 11th place. With a placing number of 17, this also meant the team victory for the day in the first national league competition. The teams from Buschhütten and Berlin were relegated to 2nd and 3rd places.

Paul Weindl, who stepped into a piece of glass during the swim exit, and Marc Trautmann, who was involved in a bike crash at a European Cup in Poland last week, were able to finish their races, but unfortunately could not contribute to a result.
