APPEAL UPHELD: SVENJA THOES WINS IRONMAN IRELAND

The 2022 season is already behind us, but for professional triathlete Svenja Thoes, it still has some delayed delights in store: as the 31-year-old triathlete explained in a press release on 1 January, her disqualification from Ironman Ireland 2022 has been reversed – reinstating her as the winner of the competition. Thanks to this adjustment, the athlete can look back on a total of three titles in 2022: Ironman France, Ironman Italy and – last but not least – Ironman Ireland.

Last August, Svenja Thoes won the race in Cork during a tight running finish, but was disqualified after the finish line and removed from contention. The reason given by the referee was ‘an instance of alleged outside assistance’, a decision appealed by the triathlete at an independent arbitration panel in Dublin, Ireland (the Triathlon Ireland Arbitration Tribunal Panel). And the appeal was successful: the underlying accusation of manipulation by Svenja Thoes and the resulting disadvantage to her fellow competitors was disproved by the panel, and Thoes was immediately reinstated as the winner of the event.

‘There could be no better end to 2022 and start to 2023’, was the Saarland local’s delighted response to this delayed victory.
