Double delight for Füchse Berlin

The European League title and A junior German Championships are heading to Berlin.

Last Sunday (27 May 2023), Füchse Berlin won the title in the EHF European League. Against Spanish opponents BM Granollers, the Füchse lived up to their position as favourites and celebrated a safe 36:31 win in the final of the final-four tournament in Flensburg.

This sees the capital’s club securing the win in a European cup competition for the third time in the club’s history: successes in the 2015 and 2018 EHF Cup were joined on Sunday by a European League triumph. This is the second-highest accolade for clubs playing at a European level, after the Champions League. Füchse’s international trophy collection also boasts two club world championships from 2015 and 2016.

The success in the final is the crowning glory of a phenomenal European cup season, during which the Berlin team won fifteen of the competition’s sixteen games. The public holiday on Whit Monday was therefore an opportunity to celebrate this success with fans at the team’s reception in Füchse Town.

This long-standing club gained another reason to celebrate after the U19 juniors’ success: on Saturday (26 May 2023), the Jungfüchse secured the A junior German Championships after successful home and away games against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, providing payback for their final defeat the previous year. The B juniors qualified for the German Championship final.

This is now the seventh German Championship title for the A juniors from Berlin, highlighting the club’s leading role in encouraging German handball talent. The environment for up-and-coming handball players at ‘Füchse Town’, the Berlin club’s young talent centre, is unique in Germany. Füchse Berlin have celebrated countless youth championship wins in recent years, and many of the talented young players now play in the federal league.

And so, things have come full circle for the current European cup heroes. Team captain and MVP of the final-four tournament Fabian Wiede, currently injured Füchse captain Paul Drux, and current Füchse coach Jaron Siewert have all risen up from successful Füchse junior teams in past years.

We would like to congratulate Füchse Berlin on this title-filled weekend and their promising prospects for the future.
