Experience elite international players live from up close

Both former world champion and Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain and current world championship runners-up Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark have announced that they will be competing. Various top players from the ‘badminton countries’ in Asia traditionally return to take part.

With reigning Olympic men’s doubles champions Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin, HYLO® OPEN defending champions Yang Po Han/Lu Chin Yao and three-time tournament winner Chou Tien Chen, Taiwan alone is sending multiple top stars to Saarland.

Twenty-four athletes are expected to arrive from China. The most prominent are Zhang Shu Xian & Zheng Yu (no. 6 in the world – women’s doubles), Jiang Zhen Bang & Wei Ya Xin (no. 6 in the world – mixed doubles), and Liu Yu Chen & Ou Xuan Yi (no. 8 in the world – men’s doubles).

India will be sending eighteen players, and Indonesia ten. Ten Malaysian players have registered for the tournament, including Ng Tze Yong (men’s singles) and Ong Yew Sin & Teo Ee Yi (men’s doubles). Thailand has five players lining up in the Saarlandhalle. The best known of these is Pornpawee Chochuwong (women’s singles).

A home tournament for the Germans

For local players, this is a very special opportunity to play in front of a home crowd in a familiar atmosphere they know well. Having friends and family among the spectators creates a particular mood that offers an additional boost of motivation. A total of seventeen German athletes will be starting the tournament in the Saarlandhalle – eleven in the main field, and six working their way through the qualification rounds. Mark Lamsfuß and Isabel Lohau once again offer huge hopes for German fans in the mixed doubles. Having won the European championship and placed third in the world championships in 2022, a knee injury for Lamsfuß has seen them slip down to 26th in the world rankings, and they will therefore be unseeded at the home tournament. ‘As expected, the tournament has a very strong lineup and there will not really be any easy rounds’, Isabel Lohau notes.

For Lamsfuß’s men’s doubles partner Marvin Seidel, this tournament is something truly special. The BC Bischmisheim and Saarland native sat in the spectator stands as a young boy and dreamed of being on the courts himself. Now he can even dream of a tournament win in his home venue, although his chances have been knocked somewhat at the moment as his doubles partner has recently been absent due to injury. Lamsfuß/Seidel will begin by meeting the American pairing of Vinson Chiu/Joshua Yuan: ‘After a long break due to injury, we will definitely have to take things one round at a time this year’, Mark Lamsfuß explains.

In the men’s singles, Fabian Roth kicks off with a showdown against last year’s finalist and number one seed Chou Tien Chen of Taiwan. Kai Schäfer is facing 2020 tournament winner Toma Junior Popov. German’s top women’s singles player Yvonne Li is up against Kisona Selvaduray of Malaysia in round one.

Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau (both BC Bischmisheim) will be trying to gain vital Olympics qualification points in the women’s doubles, and fighting their way as far as they can through the tournament one round at a time. Both are hoping to capitalise on their home advantage and the special atmosphere in the familiar venue.
