SVE celebrates point win in Düsseldorf

SV Elversberg fought its way to a 1:1 draw against Fortuna Düsseldorf – with a winning goal nearly scored shortly before the final whistle.

‘It was a game where we should have let nothing through at the back’, Fortuna’s captain Andre Hoffmann said, sourly and disappointedly adding: ‘Our goal-scoring opportunities and playing style were also much better. That was obviously not enough.’ The captain was primarily talking about the first half, when SV Elversberg were very lucky to be only one goal behind. But the Elversberg players must have given themselves a talking to during the game break, as the score flipped to 1:1 shortly after half time. Jannik Rochelt made a strong run down the left flank to the baseline and kept his eye on the ball. His flat pass to the centre found the completely free Boyamba, who took the opportunity to score his first goal of the season from around six metres out.

The Elversberg team were then very unlucky shortly before the final whistle, when Wahid Faghir was ruled offside while scoring what would have been the winning goal.

However, Horst Steffen sounded satisfied after the game: ‘We will happily take 1:1, especially after the first half, then things got better and a little more relaxed for us after the half-time break. Things were then evenly matched in the second half, and ultimately we could even have won, which would certainly have been too much of a good thing but we would have liked it anyway’, he noted after the match. On Sunday, the Elversberg players have an opportunity to score their next points in their home stadium against VfL Osnabrück.
