SVE end year with third defeat in a row

Second league football team SV Elversberg have failed to end their losing streak in the last game of the year.

On Sunday, the Saarland players lost 2:3 (1:2) to Karlsruher SC, and after their third defeat in a row are heading into the winter break in ninth place in the table – putting them as the highest-placed promoted team.

After Karlsruher SC took an early 2:0, SV Elversberg fought back to such an extent that there was talk of KSC gaining a lucky win. Elversberg gained a foothold back in the game twice and hit the frame twice. The KSC fans amid the 23,654 spectators in Wildpark had to take a deep breath several times.

‘As a coach, you cannot intervene, you can only share in the excitement. It just goes to show that we are very closely connected. Today, we achieved this together’, KSC coach Christian Eichner noted after the game. Whilst Eichner spoke of a ‘well deserved win’, SVE coach Horst Steffen’s summary was: ‘The first 20 minutes were not good at all. Then things got better. We deserved a point.’

It was also clear to Robin Fellhauer why SVE ultimately failed to gain a point: ‘The opening section was just awful. And we conceded goals too easily’, he told journalists at the Saarbrücker Zeitung.
However, finishing the year with three defeats in a row does not take away from the club’s previous success. Their task begins again after the brief winter break: they are just 16 points short of the magic 40-point threshold.
