Multi-match week for Saarlouis Royals with mixed results

After a tight 80:81 away win against GiroLive Panthers Osnabrück to kick off the year on 7 January 2024, the multi-match week ended on Sunday (13 January 2024) with a home defeat for the Saarlouis Royals, who lost their first Damen Basketball Bundesliga (DBBL) home game of the year to Eisvögel USC Freiburg with a score of 74:79. In between on Wednesday (10 January), the basketball players from Saarlouis managed to qualify for the final four of the cup competition.

With a 69:79 away win against BC Pharmaserv Marburg in the cup quarter finals, on Wednesday the Royals finally returned to the final four after ten years away! With their second away win in a few days and reaching the final tournament of the German cup, they have ensured an excellent start to the new year.

The cup competition is particularly important to the Saarlouis players, as they have won it three times in the past, in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Having qualified for the final tournament, the Saarland team is now hoping to host the event in their own hall, as they did in 2014. A bid to host the tournament in the Stadtgartenhalle in Saarlouis was submitted to the DBBL right after the quarter final victory.

For their third game within a week, the Saarlouis players had to try and combat the stress and exertion of the exhausting away games and travel. However, in their away game on Sunday against the strong Freiburg team, they were forced to admit defeat at five points behind despite putting up a good fight. After a hard week with three games, head coach Dragana Svitlica hopes that next week will offer the team enough time to recover and prepare for their upcoming tasks. The Saarlouis Royals’s next game will be an away match against TK Hannover Luchse on 20 January.

FCS Tischtennis begins second half of the season with a defeat

1. FC Saarbrücken Tischtennis faced 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the 12th day of play in the Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL) season on Saturday (13 January 2024), kicking off the second half of the season. The Saarland team were forced to return home unsuccessful following a 3:1 defeat. Without their top players Patrick Franziska and Darko Jorgic, who were still at an international tournament in Doha, FCS TT lost their match against the bottom-of-the-league Mainz team. The Saarbrücken players remain in second place in the league, two points behind Borussia Düsseldorf.

Only Cedric Nuytinck was able to gain a point for FCS Tischtennis in the away game to put things at 1:1. He won his game against Carlo Rossi 3:1. Cedric Meissner was defeated 3:0 by Yongyin Li in the first match of the day. New Saarbrücken addition Yuto Muramatsu failed to gain a foothold against his old teammate from Mainz, Luka Mladenovic, and lost 3:1. Saarbrücken player Nuytinck was unable to win his second game of the day despite some very close sets, and ultimately lost a crucial point to concede the match 3:1 to the Mainz team, who are fighting to avoid relegation.

Tischtennis Bundesliga (TTBL) games start again on 2 February after a break of nearly three weeks, with a home game for 1. FCS Tischtennis against TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell.

KSV Köllerbach misses out on German championship final

Despite putting up a brave fight at their game on native soil on Saturday evening (13 January 2024), KSV Köllerbach were unable to win the German championship semi-final and lost 10:15 to the SV Siegfried Kleinostheim wrestlers: their deficit of eight points from the first leg was just too big to make up. This meant that the Saarland team had to concede their place in the final to their opponents, despite the frenetic cheering from the sold-out crowd.

After the clear 20:12 defeat in Kleinostheim, only the most optimistic had hopes of the team reaching the final of the German wrestling championships during the second leg. The Lower Bavarian team were just too level-headed and strong, especially as the Saarland team had to manage without Peter Öhler, who was nominated for the world ranking tournament in Zagreb by the federal coach.

Although their elimination still stings, the Köllerbach team can be pleased with having reached the German championship semi-finals, a step beyond their pre-season target of the quarter finals.

proWIN Volleys return from double header with two defeats

The volleyball players of TV Holz had to kick off the new year by travelling to Bavaria for a 2. Damen-Volleyball-Bundesliga Süd double header last weekend.

On Saturday (13 January 2024), the proWIN Volleys were hosted by their direct relegation competitors and current last-placed team TSV TB München. In a thrilling and hugely exciting five-set match with long, spectacular rallies, the Saarland team ultimately had to admit defeat 3:2 (26:24, 21:25, 19:25, 25:18, 15:11). The Holz team at least managed to gain a point from this catch-up game, which was cancelled at the end of last year due to heavy snowfall in Munich.

Saturday (14 January 2024) then saw the next game for proWin Volleys, an away match against SV Lohhof. At the start of the September 2023 season, the women from Saarland were able to celebrate a home win against the Lohhof team. However, they were unable to repeat this on Sunday against the team, currently placed fourth in the league. The volleys lost their second away game of the weekend 3:0 (25:21, 25:13, 25:21) and were forced to return home with no points under their belt. They currently occupy eleventh place in the table, with nine points.

On Sunday (21 January), the TV Holz volleyball players are facing DJK Sportbund München-Ost for their first home game of the year at the Multifunktionshalle in Saarbrücken.
