Anything is possible for the Saarland Hurricanes

A top game for the Canes at their last home appearance of the regular GFL season

On Saturday (9 September 2023), things will be ramping up again in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigsparkstadion when the Saarland Hurricanes kick off their last regular federal league round of the German Football League at 5 p.m., against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. From third place in the table, tied on points with the Allgäu Comets, this final group match day of the GFL Süd league will be against the current league leader to ensure a good starting position for the playoffs.

The final day of play in the GFL Süd section has not been this exciting for a long time – there are still three teams that could finish in first place. However, the team’s main focus is on achieving one of the top two places in the table, which would ensure a home setting for the first game of the subsequent playoffs for the German Championship.

Having definitively secured a playoff place thanks to their current position in third, the Saarland Hurricanes have already achieved their minimum goal for the season at this early stage. A win against the reigning German Champions and five-time winners of the German Bowl (2011, 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2022) could boost the Saarland team’s position in the table. A difference of at least 17 points would be enough for the Canes to offset their defeat to the Unicorns earlier in the season and overtake them on the final table. A win with a smaller difference than this could also still be enough if the Allgäu Comets lose their final away game to the Ingolstadt Dukes. Amid all of these number games, there is still a possibility of the team featuring quarterback Robert Rowell ultimately heading into the playoffs as the table leaders. This would require them to win with a difference of at least 17 points, plus some support from Ingolstadt.

The team headed by the coaching team of Hendrik Voss and offensive coordinator Jakob Lawrence is confident of a surprise against favourites the Unicorns. A home record of 5:0 victories and good results, including recently away, offer some confidence. Although their record against the team from Schwäbisch Hall is currently in the red (having lost the last four games), the Canes are planning to use their home advantage and draw on the vocal support from their fans as they do their utmost to create an excellent starting point for the German Bowl quarter-finals.

This top game is guaranteed to be exciting!
