Away challenge for SVE against Greuther Fürth

SV Elversberg want to get back on track after two defeats in a row – and Greuther Fürth are particularly keen to forget last weekend.

Greuther Fürth are experiencing a definite downward trend: coach Alexander Zorniger’s players suffered a deserved 0:4 loss against Karlsruher SC in last weekend’s top 2. Bundesliga game. A win would have allowed Fürth to draw level with HSV in third place, but instead they suffered their fourth defeat in five games. Karlsruhe, who have been gradually creeping towards the top of the table, outplayed the Franconians from the start. Given the average age of the Fürth players, it is no surprise that the team sometimes has wobbles: the starting eleven averaged 23.64 years old.

At the press conference, Fürth’s head coach Alexander Zorniger congratulated Karlsruhe on an ‘absolutely deserved victory’ that was ‘not something we expected so decisively given our performance thus far this year’. The coach was audibly concerned about the multiple goals conceded: ‘Until last weekend, we were the team with the most zero-score games, and we have shown this time and again. But we are far from that right now, and the team as a whole is not working against the ball well enough.’

So it is clear where SV Elversberg need to start. Both teams are at a low point in their season, but both have already shown how they can emerge from it. A win would put SVE within three points of Fürth and essentially put their ability to remain in the second division beyond doubt.
