HYLO® Team Saar at home world championships in Hamburg

Tim Hellwig and his HYLO® Team Saar teammates take to the start line at the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships 2023 powered by SUZUKI

Things are coming thick and fast for the triathlete squad of HYLO® Team Saar – each season highlight is followed by another. Last weekend (6 to 9 July 2023), the triathletes from Saarland shone at the German Championships as part of the ‘Finals 2023 Rhein-Ruhr’ multi-sport event. The team took a magnificent first place in the third race of the Triathlon-Bundesliga season. In addition, Lasse Nygaard-Priester won the race for the first time as German champion for the sprint distance (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre cycle and 5-kilometre run), ahead of teammate Tim Hellwig, who this time takes the runner-up slot after winning the German championship title in 2021.

The coming weekend is now all about the home World Championships: the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships 2023 powered by SUZUKI will be held in Hamburg from 13 to 16 July 2023. The world’s largest short-distance triathlon event for elite and amateur athletes sees the city on the Alster being transformed into a triathlon hub. The best triathletes in the world will be gathering to compete in the spring-distance world championships for medals in both individual and relay races.

For the elite squad of the Deutsche Triathlon Union (DTU), Friday and Saturday will also see Tim Hellwig, Lasse Nygaard-Priester and Valentin Wernz of HYLO® Team Saar competing for the World Championship title on the course around Hamburg’s city hall market. Tim Hellwig has good memories of this port city on the North Sea, following his first win at the 2021 World Triathlon Championships Series (WTCS) in Hamburg.

Emil Holm from the Saarland team will be competing in the elite race over the super-sprint distance for his native country of Denmark. At the opening of the World Championships (13 July 2023), David Lang of HYLO® Team Saar – competing for Luxembourg – achieved a respectable twelfth place in the junior sprint-distance competition. On Sunday (16 July 2023),the HYLO® athletes have another opportunity to compete in the World Championships in the mixed team relay.

Neues Eliminator-Format soll für mehr Spannung sorgen

Particular excitement awaits in the individual elite competitions, where the sprint-distance world champions will be determined using the new Eliminator format.

Split into various stages across two days, this high-speed format requires athletes to build up to victory gradually. The base distance is a super sprint, consisting of a 300-metre swim, 7.2-kilometre cycle and 1.6-kilometre run. After qualifying and repechage races on the Friday, Saturday seeks the final, which is split into three sections. The top 30 athletes from the previous day’s qualification compete to determine the world champion. In each of the first two competitions on the Saturday, the ten slowest competitors are eliminated. The new champion is then crowned based on the third and last race between the remaining top ten.

We are crossing our fingers for the HYLO® Team Saar boys and wish them much luck and success for the World Championships in Hamburg.
