Joining the Saarlouis Hornets for the HYLO® home opener

We would like to welcome Saarlouis Hornets to the HYLO® Sports family and are looking forward to joining the baseball players from Saarlouis on Saturday (13 April 2024) for the 2024 HYLO® home opener to celebrate the home start to the new 2. Bundesliga Süd-West 1 season.

After a long winter break and intensive preparations, the Hornets began the new season last Sunday (7 April) with a double-header against long-time rivals Mainz Athletics 2. On their first double-header day, they faced the favourites from Mainz and achieved a respectable split (splitting the score over the two games) in an exciting head-to-head. The Saarland players gained a 6:4 win in the first game of the day before losing the second game 7:5. This was a good opportunity for the team to review their situation and performance.

The Hornets were coached by assistant coach Courtney Miles against the undefeated southwest champions, as head coach Tom Gapp was out due to illness. With a female coach on the sidelines (who also plays for the club’s women’s team), this Saarland club is paving the way in the baseball Bundesliga.

Changes to the team

The Saarlouis Hornets have not announced anyone departing the squad for the new season, but there are three new arrivals:

  • Import Rafael Segovia is returning to Saarlouis from the USA – he joined the team at the end of last season, but returned to his home country in the meantime
  • Martin Matlacki, a Saarlouis native talent, has switched back to his home club after a few years away
  • Ivan Razvan, a 19-year-old Romanian national player, is lining up for the Hornets for the first time this season. The new pitcher was able to keep Mainz’s attack at bay in his first game, despite an injury. After Ivan injured his foot on an attempt at a slide in the sixth inning, he held out right to the end and was able to nail down an emotional opening victory for the Saarlouis team. This was a fantastic debut that has prompted excitement about his future appearances

After reaching the playoffs last season, the Saarland team achieved their minimum goal, but their medium-term aim is to win the championship title and be promoted to the 1. Bundesliga.

Home start: HYLO® HOME OPENER

After a successful start against most likely their strongest competitors for the top position, the Hornets are now fired up for the next round in front of a home crowd at the ‘In den Fliesen’ ballpark in Saarlouis.

On Saturday at 12 p.m., the Saarlouis Hornets are welcoming their namesake the Bad Homburg Hornets for a double-header on home turf. This will be a fantastic baseball show with everything that spectators could want. There will be an opening ceremony, featuring the Brass Band Ludweiler playing the national anthem. The first pitch will be thrown by the district town’s new mayor, Carsten Quirin. The teams will be accompanied onto the field by children as player escorts.

At the HYLO® home opener, spectators will also have some delights in store off the field. The Hornets’ usual varied catering can now be enjoyed in the modernised beer garden, in an even more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. A raffle will offer some great prizes, including a tandem skydive. During the break between the two games, the brass band will set the mood with half an hour of musical entertainment.

In short, there is plenty of fun awaiting us in the first highlight of this baseball year.

We are looking forward to an entertaining home start to the new season with the Saarlouis Hornets and would like to wish them much luck and success.
