SVE: a bad day and their first home defeat of the year

SV Elversberg lost 0:3 to Wehen Wiesbaden after a mixed performance. Coach Horst Steffen was fed up after the final whistle – but is looking positively to the future.

The win was supposed to be a birthday present for head coach Horst Steffen – but in the end, he was very disenchanted after the game: ‘That was the biggest mess we have ever played together. There’s no need for major analysis. The boys know that already’, Steffen grumpily said to the Saarbrücker Zeitung after the match. A tough first half which saw Arne Sicker having to be substituted early came to an unassuming end: during a period of pressure from SVE shortly before half time, Wehen Wiesbaden put the score at 0:1 after a counter-attack. 0:2 then came shortly after the break, followed by 0:3 to ensure clear victory just before the final whistle.

In any case, the head coach does not want to dwell on this game for overly long: ‘It was a bad day, full stop. So we need to draw a line under it quickly. I already have. It was a weak game, and I hope the boys will also come back from their injuries. Then maybe we can do better playing away in Fürth.’ A win would have ensured an even bigger cushion above the relegation spots, which makes this defeat even more pointless: ‘I know where we stand and I know who our opponents are, so of course we would have liked the win to safeguard our league place, and we didn’t manage that. That means that today’s defeat wasn’t a bitter one, just something we need to draw a line under. We are now looking forward to the next game and plan to put in a better performance.’
