SVE’s combined strength puts it back on the road to success

SV Elversberg beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 2:1 in front of a record crowd to stabilise their season.

Whilst the many 1. FC Kaiserslautern fans who travelled to the stadium left with dour faces, a visibly proud Horst Steffen answered questions at the microphone. ‘It was hard-fought and we didn’t really allow any goal-scoring opportunities. We then conceded a goal from a hopeful long-range shot, so it was remarkable that the team managed to stay on track and not be put off, especially as recent results have not been so good. We fought our way back cleanly and gave our all’, SVE’s visibly proud coach added.

In Steffen’s view, a crucial part of the 2:1 victory was the team’s response to the conceded goal and missed opportunities: ‘Of course, using our chances is important, but it is equally important to work together as a team to defend our goal. The boys managed this well, which is why there will be no accusations of missed chances. This happens to every team in the league, and the important thing is to defend together. So there is nothing to reproach anyone for. And that is exactly what gave us our three points – bringing this game home together.’

SVE is now sitting ninth in the table with 28 points. At 21 points, FCK is still in the midst of the 2. Liga relegation battle.

SVE’s next league match is on Saturday at 1 p.m., an away game against current fifth-placed team Fortuna Düsseldorf.
