BIKE AID FAQs

The BIKE AID e.V. club was founded following an idea from Eric Haus, who worked with his mountain biking friends to begin collecting sponsorship for each metre of altitude they cycled. The professional BIKE AID team was founded by Matthias Schnapka and Timo Schäfer in 2014.

BIKE AID offers prospects for African athletes, from fulfilling their sporting dreams through to education and traineeship opportunities.

The BIKE AID team does not yet ride in the Tour de France. The BIKE AID professional team is registered with the world cycling body UCI as a Continental team, which is the body’s third category for road cycling.
The 18 UCI World teams are required to compete, whilst teams in the second category (UCI Pro teams) are invited. The third category begins with road races on UCI Continental Circuits (e.g. UCI Africa Tour, UCI America Tour, UCI Asia Tour, UCI Europe Tour, UCI Oceania Tour). The primary goal is to be promoted to a Pro team and take part in the Tour de France in the future.

BIKE AID races can regularly be watched on Eurosport, the GCN Player, or for major races on the national TV channels of the countries where the races are being held, including the Deutschland Tour on ARD/ZDF or French races on France TV. This particularly applies to category 1 and Pro races. Smaller UCI category 2 races are often available as livestreams on the race organiser’s website.

Yes, you can become a member – everyone is welcome and can join the community. Membership for example includes insurance cover, purchasing benefits from partners, support for social commitments, and the opportunity to launch your own activities wherever you want to introduce the sport of cycling. Further information is available at www.bikeaid.de.

The analogy to Live Aid, a benefit concert held on 13 July 1985 to raise funds for Africa, is entirely deliberate. BIKE AID was a fundraising campaign created by enthusiastic cyclists to benefit charitable projects – and is the name of the cycling club and its professional team.

BIKE AID’s greatest success is the unique concept of a cycling club with a professional team and a social mission. It has raised well over a million euros in funds since it was created.

Put plainly, to BIKE AID honest cycling means fairness, and above all no doping.

BIKE AID’s goal is to make the sport of cycling open to as many people as possible – regardless of their social or cultural background. They also want to get as many people in Germany as possible excited about cycling.

BIKE AID cyclists train wherever they are – all over the world, and in Saarland!
