Füchse Berlin begin preparations for the 2023/24 season

The club’s managers are aware of the high expectations from the fan community. Qualifying for the Champions League remains a focus for team manager Bob Hanning, although it is not a guarantee given the opportunities and budgets available to competitors THW Kiel, SC Magdeburg and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Stefan Kretzschmar, the board member for sports, even calls this a ‘Herculean task’. After all, the team will have to compensate for the departure of Danish playmaker and world champion Jacob Holm to French first division team Paris Saint-Germain, as well as the prolonged absence of team captain Paul Drux due to a ruptured Achilles tendon incurred when playing with the national team. We would like to take this opportunity to once again wish Paul Drux all the best and a speedy return.

Neuzugänge bei den Füchsen Berlin

Two new arrivals have already begun training with the team: Jerry Tollbring (SWE) and Hakun West Av Teigum (FO) have come to reinforce Füchse. Another top-class player is still being sought for the back position. However, Füchse also want to put the depth of their squad to better use and further develop and incorporate potential from their own young talent. After a successful summer with the German Championship for the junior team and the World Championship for the U21s, there is a drive to give the World Championship heroes greater playing time and responsibility. For example, 20-year-old Nils Lichtlein, the newly crowned U21 World Champion and tournament MVP, will be given more playing time in his second Bundesliga season. U21 World Champions Matthes Langhoff, Tim Freihöfer and Lasse Ludwig will also be strengthening the squad.

Traditionally, Füchse begin their preparations with performance diagnostics at Charité Berlin and the Olympic training centre. The first friendly games are on 21 and 22 July, before the team under head coach Jaron Siewert head to training camp at Spreewelten Lübbenau on 24 July.

The first difficult tests will then be the Wartburg Cup from 4 to 6 August in Eisenach, against three league competitors. A week later, Füchse Berlin will then be tested in Denmark against Silkeborg-Bjerringbro and Danish champions GOG. The traditional duel against cooperation partner VfL Potsdam to open the season will take place once again this year, in 15 August.
