SV Elversberg makes club history in Schalke

SV Elversberg beats FC Schalke 04 2:1 in front of the biggest crowd in their history.

Things got off to a turbulent start when a double strike from Elversberg gave Schalke an early shock: Paul Stock gained Elversberg an early lead (7th minute), then a pass by Stock setting up a goal by Jannik Rochelt highlighted the huge weaknesses in the hosts’ defence at this stage (21st minute). However, Schalke fought back, but were only able to regain one goal by Kenan Karaman (35th minute).

‘When we drove in and entered the stadium, it was really impressive – at least from the outside’, said Elversberg’s coach Horst Steffen about how impressed his players were by the 60,000-strong audience in the Arena auf Schalke, ‘but then I said: “it will only be great if we win too”. The lads needed that, and put it into practice well.’

During the second half, the Schalke team made repeated charges, but the club never lost their nerve during the final stage and retained their narrow lead until the final whistle. ‘We had great plans, but performed disastrously in the first thirty minutes’, said Schalke goalkeeper Kenan Karaman after the match: ‘We had two wins behind us and wanted a confident game. But Elversberg caught us on the hop.’ The Saarland team ultimately played a confident match in Schalke – the only bitter pill was Carlo Sickinger’s injury.

For the 14th day of play, SV Elversberg will be hosting SC Paderborn (Saturday 25/11/2023 at 1 p.m.).
