WHAT’S NEW FROM THE HYLO® SPORTS FAMILY

Many of our #hyloathletes have been out and about once again in recent days. We take a look back at the events and competitions featuring our athletes, teams and clubs over the past week.

TG Saar crowns its season with third place

On Saturday (2 December 2023), the gymnasts of TG Saar gained a resounding win over last year’s winners TuS Vinnhorst in the Deutsche Turnliga (DTL) ‘small final’ and secured third place in the German team championships for apparatus gymnastics. In the final for third place, TG Saar secured a clear victory against the reigning champions and thus won a bronze medal for the 2023 Deutsche Turnliga season. With a final score of 43:23, the Saarland athletes put in a strong team performance in front of a sold-out crowd in Neu-Ulm. The unusual order of the apparatus initially caused some problems for the team under coach Eugen Spiridonov. However, TG Saar showed a fighting spirit and decisively turned things around in their favour. The Saarland gymnasts performed particularly well on the horizontal bar (9:1), floor (13:0) and pommel horse (12:5). The top scorers in the ‘small final’ were the 2023 German floor and pommel horse champion Daniel Mousichidis and 2016 Olympic parallel bars champion Oleg Verniaiev, who scored eight points each for TG Saar and played a vital role in the win.

By winning the bronze medal, the gymnasts of TG Saar have earned recognition for a strong season and successfully hitting the goals they have set. The combination of experienced gymnasts and the ‘young bucks’ trained in-house, who are taking on an increasing amount of responsibility, showed that a well-balanced team can achieve outstanding results. Congratulations to TG Saar.

Double away success for Füchse Berlin

Last week, Berlin’s handball players were out and about for two matches in unfamiliar surroundings, and managed to bring home a win from both.

In the EHF European League, on Tuesday (28 November 2023) Füchse Berlin won their away game against Chambery Savoie 36:31 (17:14) to secure top placement in the group, as well as a perfect points score of four points for the main round. The top scorer was Moritz Sauter with eight goals, and this former Füchse young talent was particularly impressive. After the game, coach Jaron Siewert appeared to be ‘very happy with the win, and above all with how they played’. The coach was proud of the work his team put in during the evening, and in particularly the impressive performance of his young players.

Friday (1 December 2023) saw their next away game, this time against HSG Wetzlar for the Bundesliga. Füchse also won this game 36:30 (18:15), and after fourteen days of play and twelve wins, are joint leaders of the LIQUI MOLY HBL table alongside SC Magdeburg. Dejan Milosavljev provided vital support with 15 saves, whilst Mathias Gidsel was the capital team’s top scorer with eight goals. Despite the strains of travel from Tuesday’s EHF match, the Berlin players performed magnificently with victory never in doubt.

Things continue for Füchse on Tuesday (5 December) with a home game against HC Izvidac in the European League (8:45 p.m.), before hosting Frisch Auf! Göppingen for a Bundesliga match on Sunday (10 December).

Comprehensive defeat for SVE despite appearing dominant

On Sunday (3 December 2023), promoted team SV Elversberg suffered a comprehensive loss in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga against Hertha BSC, who were relegated from the top league. In what was often a fast and furious game, the Berlin team ultimately emerged victorious 5:1 (2:1). The eleven players under coach Horst Steffen put in an intoxicating performance at points, especially in the first section, but failed to make effective use of their chances and also suffered bad luck in the form of a disallowed goal in the opening minutes. Their opponents, on the other hand, were as ice-cold as the surrounding air, and mercilessly converted their small handful of chances to achieve what was ultimately a very comprehensive win that did not necessarily reflect the progress of the game. More details in our post-match report.

With 24 points, #SVE are in sixth place in the 2. Bundesliga table. On Sunday (10 December), SVE will be hosting 1. FC Nürnberg for their last home game of the year at the URSAPHARM Arena on Kaiserlinde.

Saarlouis Royals win epic battle

On Sunday (3 December 2023), the Saarlouis Royals celebrated a narrow home victory in an extremely exciting game against GiroLive Panthers Osnabrück at the Stadtgartenhalle. The Saarlouis basketball players ultimately managed to just emerge victorious over the Panthers at 72:71 and chalk up their third win of the season in the Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga (DBBL). In a game of back and forth with plenty of alternating of the lead, the Royals put in a strong final spurt from 65:71 behind less than two minutes before the final whistle. A 7:0 run provided the crucial turning point and the Saarland team’s first home win this season.

Of the Saarlouis players, Destiny Littleton shone with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist (23 efficiency points). Other successful performers were Sylwia Bujniak with 18 points (4 of 5 three-pointers), 3 rebounds and 2 assists (17 efficiency points), Milena Marjanovic with 7 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists (17 efficiency points) and Naomi Mbandu with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist (9 efficiency points).

This Sunday (10 December) the Royals will be seeking to continue their mini winning streak with their third victory in a row, in an away game against Eigner Angels Nördlingen.

proWIN Volleys still waiting for next win

Last weekend began with a cancelled game for the TV Holz proWIN Volleys. The Saarland team’s 2. Bundesliga Frauen Süd away game against TSV TB München on Saturday (2 December 2023) was cancelled at short notice due to the arrival of severe winter conditions. This meant that their double-header weekend became just a Sunday trip to Stuttgart. However, the Saarland players still had to return home without a win under their belt: on Sunday (3 December 2023), they suffered a 3:0 loss in their away game against BSP MTV Stuttgart, who had previously failed to chalk up any victories. This leaves the Holz team still awaiting their next win to move them up off the bottom of the table. Mylana Byrd was the best proWIN player.

Next weekend is free of games for the young Saarland team. They are planning to relax and recover their strength for their upcoming match against Barock Volleys MTV Ludwigsburg, who they are tied with on points in the table rankings, on 16 December.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
