Team BIKE AID from Tour to Tour

The international cycling schedule sometimes means that cycling events and Tour appearances line up in close succession for racing teams – and this is no exception for professional cycling team BIKE AID

Until last Tuesday (9 July 2024), the Saarland team was in Romania competing against World Tour and Pro Continental Teams on the Sibiu Cycling Tour 2024 (UCI 2.1), crossing the finish line in ninth to secure a respectable team result.

The best rider on the German Continental team was Eritrean Dawit Yemane, who finished in 18th in the overall rankings, 5:42 minutes behind the leader. His team colleague Antoine Berlin was once again in the breakaway group on the final day, but was caught back up ten kilometres before the finish. He ultimately finished in 36th in the overall rankings. Anton Schiffer came in 23rd in the race in the Carpathians.

Upon returning from Romania, some of the team were already back in action again on Saturday (13 July 2024) in France’s Jura mountains. Team BIKE AID and its riders Mate Balazs, Yoel Habteab, Leslie Lührs, Antoine Berlin, Oliver Mattheis and Dawit Yemane travelled to the Ain region of France for the Tour de l’Ain to compete once again in this three-day race (UCI 2.1) from 13 to 15 July against top teams from the elite categories of international cycling.

The team chalked up some remarkable results in this stage race around a French public holiday. On day one, Yoel Habteab finished in ninth and Maté Balazs secured two climbing points. On day two, Dawit Yemane overcame difficult terrain to finish in 28th place. On the final day, Oliver Mattheis, Antoine Berlin and Dawit Yemane came in 21st, 25th and 26th respectively. In the overall rankings on the Monday, Yemane was BIKE AID‘s top driver and finished in 24th place. The team finished in tenth in the overall team rankings.

The Tour d’Alsace will see this cycling team from Blieskastel competing in a race on their own doorstep in neighbouring France on 24 July.

Double away win for Saarlouis Hornets

Having already safely qualified for the playoffs, last Sunday (14 July 2024) the Saarlouis Hornets travelled to Frankfurt for their final away game of the 2. Baseball-Bundesliga Südwest 1 main season. Against the Frankfurt Eagles, bottom of the league and still without a win, the Hornets were able to build on their recent successes. The double-header became a safe sweep against the team from the Main metropolis.

In the first game of the day, the baseball players of Saarlouis conceded eight runs to their hosts, but ultimately secured an easy 19:8 win. Game two was then clearly dominated by the Hornets: the visitors swept the home team off the pitch with a 14:1 victory.

This double win has given the Saarland team even more self-confidence for the season finale, and confirmed their top form a week before their top game against table leaders Mainz Athletics 2.

Their place in the playoffs is already officially secured, and the Saarlouis players can no longer drop below their current second place in the Bundesliga Süd-West. Planning for the playoffs can begin. In the two remaining home games of the main season, on Saturday (20 July) against Mainz and on 27 July against Darmstadt Whippets, the Saarlouis Hornets could still reach the top of the table from their ball park and put themselves in the best possible starting position for the knockout games.

Germany’s rhythmic gymnasts shine at Olympics trial run

The female rhythmic gymnasts of the German gymnastics team put in an impressive performance at the World Challenge Cup in Cluj-Napoca, Romania on 13 and 14 July 2024.

World champion Darja Varfolomeev of TSV Schmiden secured the silver medal in the all-around competition and two golds with the ball and clubs. They gave fantastic performances and left their competition in their wake. Their training colleague Margarita Kolosov gained a bronze with the hoop.

The German group of Anja Kosan, Daniella Kromm, Alina Oganesyan, Hannah Vester and Emilia Wickert and reserve athlete Melanie Dargel finished their Siebenbürgen trip in sixth place with five hoops, and seventh place with three ribbons and two balls.

The German gymnasts are now ready to compete at the Olympics in Paris.

SV Elversberg back from training camp

SV Elversberg have just finished an intense, productive training camp in Mierlo in the Netherlands. Coach Horst Steffen’s team were preparing for the 2024/2025 season of the 2. Bundesliga from 8 to 13 July 2024.

They also played various test matches during the training camp. We have already reported in detail on the first two matches against Eintracht Trier and Swift Hesperange.

The final test match of the training camp was on Friday (12 July 2024) against Fortuna Sittard. Despite strong play and a dominant performance, especially in the first half, SV Elversberg suffered a close 0:1 loss.

Despite the defeat, the team had a positive attitude and are well positioned for the second division’s upcoming 50th anniversary season. SVE‘s next test match will be on Saturday (20 July) against KAS Eupen in Bitburg.

At the Rigi Schwing- und Älplerfest in Rigi (CH) on Sunday (14 July 2024), with nearly 5000 spectators, 23-year-old Swiss wrestler Michael Ledermann was once again able to clinch a crown and with it an exceptional second place.

Having won five rounds and drawn one, the Swiss wrestler from Schwingclub Schwarzenburg gained a total score of 57.75 points to finish second and was one of 14 crown winners in the total of 90 participants.

Ledermann is now looking forward to a brief period of recovery before returning to the sawdust ring on 3 August at the Emmentalisches Schwingfest in Burgdorf.

Carrie Schreiner clocks up the kilometres in Zandvoort

As part of the ‘ROKiT F4 British Championship certified by FIA’ race series, last week (11 to 13 July 2024) Saarland racing driver Carrie Schreiner clocked up some vital preparatory kilometres in Zandvoort (Netherlands).

The 25-year-old professional racing driver from Völklingen used the British racing series’s foreign date on the Dutch North Sea coast to prepare for the upcoming championship race in the F1 Academy racing series in Zandvoort on 23 to 25 August.
