Tim Hellwig’s success story continues

After successfully qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and coming second in the Grand Final of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) in Pontevedra, Spain just under a month ago, last Saturday (14 October 2023) Tim Hellwig celebrated his first World Cup win in the triathlon elite class at the race in Chengdu, China. This 24-year-old top triathlete from HYLO® Team Saar performed well at the World Triathlon Cup 2023 for the Olympic distance (1.5-km swim, 40-km cycle, 10-km run) with a fantastic finish at the top of the strong field, taking home his first World Cup win in a time of 1:44:15 hours. This continues his impressive string of wins and has further improved his World Cup ranking. On 21 October, Tim will be at the starting line of the World Triathlon Cup in Tongyeong, South Korea as part of his Asian tour.

Svenja Thoes in the world’s top 15

At the Women’s Ironman World Championship, the legendary Ironman Hawaii overnight from Saturday to Sunday (14 & 15 October 2023), Saarland triathlete Svenja Thoes gained an outstanding fourteenth place. After a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180-kilometre cycle and a marathon on the Pacific island, Thoes was delighted to reach the finish line in an overall time of 08:58:30 hours. After plenty of highs and lows during preparations and some injuries over the course of the season, she can be rightfully proud of her performance, as despite difficult conditions without a coach or support team onsite, she finished as one of the top fifteen professional female triathletes in the world. We are hugely proud of this exceptional physical and mental performance.

Gabriel Clemens narrowly loses the quarter final

At the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim last weekend (13 to 15 October 2023), Saarland darts pro Gabriel Clemens reached the final session on the Sunday and was only narrowly defeated in the quarter final after losing the deciding leg 5:6 to Dutch player Michael van Gerwen. To round off the European Tour 2023, the German Giant demonstrated rising form and respectable results with his third quarter final of this year’s tour. The players he knocked out of the tournament included top seeded Brit Dave Chisnall. This Wednesday to Saturday, Gaga is continuing things with four Players Championships in Barnsley (England), after which on 26 October, the Saarland native joins the 32 top players on the European Tour to compete for the title at the 2023 European Darts Championship in Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle.

Home win and start record for Füchse Berlin

Füchse are marching on through the LIQUI MOLY HBL: the Berlin team did not give Rhein-Neckar Löwen any chances, taking a magnificent 38:32 win (17:14) in front of 7143 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. Mathias Gidsel was particularly impressive on the local team with 11 goals, and Hans Lindberg made it to 10 (6). This gave Füchse their 17th and 18th points, representing a start record for the club. The capital’s club has never before begun a season with nine wins! With their sixth league win in a row, against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, Füchse remain the leaders of the LQUI MOLY HBL. Things continue on Tuesday (17 October) at home against Chambery Savoie (6:45 p.m.) as they begin their mission to defend the European League title, and on Thursday (19 October) with another home game against the current second-placed team in the league MT Melsungen (7 p.m.).

Saarlouis Royals in the next round of the DBBL cup

On Saturday (14 October 2023), the Saarlouis Royals achieved a clear 86:41 win in the DBBL cup over second-league team the Rhein Main Baskets. Both teams had just reached the second round of the cup competition, with the second-league team enjoying the home advantage. This away-game success puts the Royals in the cup’s last sixteen. The Saarlouis players dominated the game throughout, meaning that advancement to the next round was never in doubt. The Saarland team’s best thrower was American player Destiny Littleton with 21 points. The Royals are hosting TK Hannover on 22 October for their next league game.

proWIN Volleys win epic away game

At their women’s volleyball 2. Bundesliga away game on Sunday (15 October 2023), the proWIN Volleys of TV Holz narrowly defeated TV Planegg-Krailling, their league rivals from Bavaria. After a weak initial set, which they lost, the Saarland players fought back to win the second set. They also prevailed in fantastic form in the third set, but once again conceded set four to the Bavarians. In an extremely even game between two equally-matched teams that gave nothing away, it all came down to a tie break in the fifth set. The proWIN Volleys finally won the epic battle 15:13, taking two vital away points home. This Saturday (21 October) sees the next 2. Liga match for the volleys, a 7 p.m. home game in Saarbrücken’s Multifunktionshalle against the Roten Raben Vilsbiburg second team.
