Füchse Berlin in sync for their win

After their 32:30 home win on Easter Sunday in the LIQUI MOLY Handball-Bundesliga, Füchse Berlin had very little time to recover before Tuesday evening (2 April 2024) and the second leg of the EHF European League playoffs against Kadetten Schaffhausen of Switzerland. The capital team won at home 34:28 (18:11) in front of 4,717 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The Berlin team’s top scorers were Mathias Gidsel and Nils Lichtlein, with seven goals each. Goalkeeper Milosavljev shone once again with 11 saves. After the win in the first leg the previous week, coach Jaron Siewert’s team now move forward to the quarter-final, where they will face HBC Nantes. This will begin at home on 23 April and be followed by the second leg in France on 30 April, with the Berlin defending champions seeking to gain a ticket to the final-four end tournament for the EHF Cup.

They had little time after the win to celebrate reaching the quarter finals: Thursday (4 April 2024) saw the Berlin team’s next LIQUI MOLY HBL match and thus their third game in five days. The Berlin players were hosted by FRISCH AUF! Göppingen at 7 p.m. The table leaders from Berlin met the current twelfth-placed team at the EWS Arena for the 28th day of play. The Göppingen players were responsible for the team’s only dropped points in front of a home crowd this season.

However, Füchse Berlin were able to confidently win the away game on Thursday evening 27:32 (15:14) in front of 4900 spectators at the EWS Arena in Göppingen. This keeps coach Jaron Siewert’s team at the top of the Handball Bundesliga table, one game ahead of second-placed team Magdeburg. Mathias Gidsel was once again the game’s best scorer with 11 goals.

After three successful games in five days, Füchse now have a little time to pause for breath before fighting for the DHV Cup in the REWE FINAL4 on 13/14 April. The Berlin handball team will be facing SC Magdeburg in the semi-final. The starting whistle is on Saturday (13 April) at 4:10 p.m. in Cologne’s Lanxess Arena.

German gymnastics team successful in trampolining and artistic gymnastics

European Trampoline Championships in Portugal

Less than two weeks after their home World Cup in Cottbus, the next international highlight was already on the agenda for the trampolinists on the German gymnastics team. The European Championships were held in Guimaraes, Portugal from 3 to 7 April.

Men’s team soars to silver

Germany’s trampolinists were able to secure the silver medal in the European Championships team finals. In the final scores on Thursday evening (4 April 2024), the German gymnastics squad of Fabian Vogel, Matthias Schuldt, Matthias Pfleiderer and Caio Lauxtermann gained a nine-point score that was only exceeded by France (13).

For the women, Leonie Adam, Aileen Rösler, Aurelia Eislöffel and Maya Möller secured fifth place with six points in the team final.

With fourth place for Vogel/Lauxtermann and Eislöffel/Möller, the German men’s and women’s synchronised pairs only just missed out on a podium finish at the European Trampoline Championships on Saturday (5 April).

Fifth place in individual competitions

On Sunday (7 April), Stuttgart athlete Matthias Pfleiderer finished the title fight in Guimaraes, Portugal in fifth place, securing the best German placing in the Olympic individual competition. The 28-year-old gained 57,420 points in the final. Things did not go so well for his team colleagues: both Fabian Vogel and Caio Lauxtermann failed to get through the morning semi-final. Among the women, tenth placed competitor at the Rio Olympics Leonie Adam finished in ninth with 53,000 points, missing the final by just one place and one hundredth of a point. Aileen Rösler came eleventh and Aurelia Eislöffel finished in eighteenth.

Lukas Dauser wins gold at World Challenge Cup in Osijek

The artistic gymnasts on the German gymnastics team also had titles to compete for at the weekend. World parallel bars champion Lukas Dauser was able to win the gold medal in this discipline at the World Challenge Cup in Osijek (Croatia). The Unterhaching gymnast, who trains in Halle, put in a strong performance on his favourite apparatus in the final on Saturday (6 April 2024), earning 15.55 points with a D score of 6.7. This strong debut represented a very satisfying start to the Olympic year for Dauser.

Double podium finish for BIKE AID at the Tour of Mersin

At the Tour of Mersin in Turkey from 4 to 7 April 2024, Saarland’s professional cycling team BIKE AID once again put in a strong team performance. With Oliver Mattheis in second place and Dawit Yemane in third, two of the team’s riders achieved impressive positions in the overall rankings. For Oliver Mattheis, this was his first overall ranking podium finish. For Dawit, this was further proof of his huge potential.

Even the first stage of the tour was a great success for the team, with a stage win and yellow jersey for Dawit Yemane. BIKE AID won all of the jerseys on this particular day: overall, mountain, sprint, junior and team classifications.

For team newcomer Yoel Habteab, who came back stronger on his second tour after setbacks at the Tour du Rwanda, winning the mountain rankings at the Tour of Mersin was a huge success! Dawit Jemane finished in second place. The Eritrean ended the sprint rankings way in front. Pirmin Eisenbarth ultimately came fifth in the final rankings for the sprint.

The Continental team from Saarland ended the tour with a fantastic team result, coming in second in the overall team rankings. Things continue for the team next weekend with three one-day races in France.

SVE a step closer to their season aim after a goalless draw

On Saturday (6 April 2024), SV Elversberg managed a draw in a challenging game against 1. FC Magdeburg, securing a vital point in their fight to stay in the league. Despite a difficult game where both teams played very cautious, safe football, SVE put up a strong defence. After a long wait, Coach Horst Steffen’s team have finally managed to end a game again without any goals against them: SVE’s fans last celebrated a home win without conceding any goals during a 3:0 win on 30 October 2023. Elversberg’s last 0:0 draw was even longer ago, back in their third division days, when SVE had a goalless draw against SV Meppen on the seventh day of play.

The point won at the URSAPHARM arena means that after the 28th day of play, the Saarland team now has 36 points on its 2. Fußball-Bundeliga ledger. At eleventh place in the table and seven points above the relegation zone, this represents another vital step towards achieving their season aim. Next up are two top-level games: on Sunday 14 April, SVE will be facing table leaders FC St. Pauli. Their next home game will then be on Friday evening, 19 April, against FC Schalke 04.

Saarlouis Hornets begin the season with a split

On Sunday (7 April 2024), Saarlouis Hornets began the new 2. Baseball-Bundesliga season with a double header against Mainz Athletics 2. On their first double-header day, they faced the favourites from Mainz and achieved a respectable split (splitting the score over the two games) in the Rhineland-Palatinate capital.

The first game of the day, at 12 p.m., saw the Saarland team win 6:4. In the second, at 3:30 p.m., the Hornets from Saarlouis had to admit defeat 7:5. However, as they headed back home the Hornets could be satisfied overall with their spoils and performance on their first away trip to kick-off the league.

On Saturday (13 April), the Hornets meet their namesake the Bad Homburg Hornets for the HYLO® 2024 season home opener at their Saarlouis ballpark. Starting at 12 p.m., spectators can enjoy two exciting baseball games as well as some colourful entertainment.

BC Bischmisheim secure place in final four

Before the start of the European Badminton Championships in Saarbrücken, the national players of BC Bischmisheim had another key task to complete on Saturday (6 April 2024). To preserve their chances of defending the title, the 2023 German team champions had to enter the playoff quarter-finals after finishing the Bundesliga main round in third place.

During the playoff quarter-final games, eleven-time title winners 1. BC Saarbrücken-Bischmisheim soundly defeated Blau-Weiss Wittorf 4:0 in front of a home crowd at the Joachim-Deckarm-Halle. Marvin Seidel, Isabel Lohau, Linda Efler and their teammates did not drop a single set. Interestingly, Bischmisheim and Wittorf also faced each other in the 2022 and 2023 playoff quarter-finals. The results speak for themselves: 3:0 to the Saarland team.

The big showdown will be in just over two weeks, at the final four tournament for the German team championships. The final four will be held on 20 and 21 April in Bad Vilbel, Hesse for the first time, hosted by SV Fun-Ball Dortelweil. The semi-finals will see a clash between tournament hosts SV Fun-Ball Dortelweil and SC Union Lüdinghausen, with the other match being contested between 1. BC Wipperfeld and BC Bischmisheim, in a replay of last year’s final.

We are looking forward to upcoming appearances from our #hyloathletes and wish all of our HYLO® partners much luck and success.
